The Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Tuesday, paid its final respects to one of its most influential leaders, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London clinic.

Following a solemn state funeral held in Abuja, the late president’s remains were flown to his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, where he was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

The ceremony was marked by a deep sense of national loss and reflection on the life of a man whose leadership shaped Nigeria’s modern history.

Buhari, who first ruled as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later returned as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was remembered for his austere discipline, anti-corruption stance, and steadfast commitment to national unity.

The funeral was attended by a cross-section of Nigeria’s political elite, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and former Vice Presidents Yemi Osinbajo and Atiku Abubakar. Also in attendance were former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and prominent former governors such as Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Ali Modu Sheriff, a former PDP National Chairman and Borno State Governor, were also present.

In his tribute, President Tinubu described the late statesman as “a nationalist whose unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, security, and anti-corruption war has left a lasting imprint on the nation’s conscience.”

The interment took place at the late president’s private residence and was attended by the Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, who hailed Buhari’s legacy of dedicated service to the emirate, Katsina State, and the entire nation.
