First Lady Remi Tinubu donates ₦500m to Anambra State

AWKA, Anambra — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦500 million to Anambra State to support women empowerment and economic interventions in the state.

The donation was announced on Thursday, September 10, 2026, during Mrs Tinubu’s official visit to Anambra, where she was received by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, his wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, traditional rulers, government officials and residents.

The First Lady presented the ₦500 million cheque to Governor Soludo and his wife amid cheers and applause from the gathering.

The donation formed part of the activities surrounding Mrs Tinubu’s first official visit to Anambra since she became First Lady of Nigeria. Her visit also included the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East and the commissioning of an Information and Communication Technology Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

Ahead of the visit, the Anambra State Government had said the First Lady’s programme would focus on food security, poverty reduction, digital skills and economic empowerment, including support for 5,000 beneficiaries across the state.

Speaking during the visit, Mrs Tinubu expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded her by the people of Anambra.

She recalled her relationship with people from the South-East, saying she had Igbo friends during her university days and had maintained a positive relationship with the Igbo people.

The First Lady also spoke about the extent of her travels across Nigeria, noting that she had visited almost all the states in the country and was yet to visit Zamfara State.

Her remarks came against the backdrop of the warm reception she received in Anambra, where the state government had mobilised residents ahead of her arrival.

The visit also saw the First Lady honoured with the traditional title “Ugo Eze 1 of Anambra State,” in recognition of her presence and contribution to social and economic empowerment initiatives.

The Anambra State Government had described the visit as an opportunity to deepen collaboration between the Federal Government and the state, particularly in tackling poverty, improving food security and expanding opportunities for vulnerable residents.

The presentation of the ₦500 million cheque to Governor Soludo and his wife became one of the major moments of the visit, with the audience responding with sustained applause.

Mrs Tinubu’s Anambra visit comes days after her South-South engagements and as the Renewed Hope Initiative continues to roll out programmes targeting vulnerable households, women, children and young people across the country.
