Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State, saying the decision was taken in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in the state.
In a statement released on May 20, 2026, Fubara said he arrived at the decision after “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and political associates. The governor disclosed that he would no longer participate in the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries and pledged support for whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
According to him, leadership requires sacrifice and the collective interest of Rivers State must come above personal ambition. He acknowledged the disappointment among his supporters, many of whom had invested time, resources, and energy into his political aspiration, but urged them to remain calm and committed to the APC.
Fubara also hinted at mounting political pressures surrounding his decision, stating that he had faced “immense pressures and difficult choices,” but maintained that his silence throughout the period was strategic and guided by the desire to preserve peace in the state.
Fubara stressed that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender, but rather a sacrifice aimed at ensuring stability and unity in Rivers State.
The governor thanked the APC leadership and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and encouragement during the process. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the expiration of his tenure as governor.
