Gani Adams, Yoruba group give reasons Nigeria should be restructured

The convener of Oodua Progressives Union and leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams has joined eminent Nigerians in the call for the restructuring of the country.

Adams, while lending his voice to the call for restructuring also suggested the adoption of “mutual understanding and compromise” to make Nigeria’s democracy workable.

He said this during the third Europe Summit of Yoruba natives in diaspora, Odua Progressive Union, OPU, which held in Sweden.

In a communiqué issued by its Europe Coordinator, Victor Adewale, OPU said the immediate restructuring of Nigeria will ensure development and rescue the country from imminent crash.

The group among other decisions “supports the call for restructuring and devolution of power” and that “Nigeria be structured via regional line”

The communiqué reads, “It is an understatement that Nigeria is a failed nation. There is urgent need for all stakeholders to come together and determine the future. The numerous issues confronting the nation and agitations from various interests should be promptly addressed.

”The position of European Union of OPU is clear; we throw our weight behind those who clamour for regional integration so that Nigeria will be restructured using the six geo political zones as a model. Devolution of power to regions should also be the song on our lips now.”

Insisting that OPU has a role to play in reshaping the country, Adewale said the group is “mindful of what is expected of us despite the fact that we are outside the country. For now we don’t have voting rights, but our voice, position and recommendations can influence what is happening at home.”

OPU also commended its sister body, OPC for collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force to flush the dreaded Badoo cultist group out of Ikorodu in Lagos state.

Speaking at the event, Adams said “It is a thing of joy for me to bear witness today, the tremendous progress that OPU as a body has witnessed globally as it now operates effectively in 78 countries of the world”.

”But as we celebrate here, it is unfortunate that we cannot do same in country Nigeria where things have seriously retrogressed. However, all hands must be on deck to save the country.

“There is no gainsaying that Nigeria has what it takes to be a welfare state with her human natural endowments. But she must take a cue from Sweden and adopt the main ingredients of the Swedish polity where mutual understanding and compromise reign.

“It is my believe that if only we had been able to factor and accommodate these two ingredients into our governance, there wouldn’t have been no basis for the ear itching calls for the breakup of Nigeria we are witnessing at the moment”.
