Twenty female nursing and midwifery students from Yobe State’s 17 local government areas can now sit for their council exams without worrying about fees, thanks to a former scholarship beneficiary paying it forward.
Dr. Rabiatu Adamu Saleh, who rose from secondary school at Nigerian Tulip International Colleges to a doctorate at Nile University of Nigeria on the Yobe State scholarship scheme, said she deliberately targeted women for the sponsorship.
“For me this is about opening doors for women who have the talent but face barriers,” Dr. Saleh said.
She described the move as both gratitude to the state government and an investment in Yobe’s future.
She noted that social and economic obstacles often keep women in the state from advancing professionally, even when they have the potential to drive change.
“Supporting women to reach higher professional qualifications strengthens our healthcare system and improves problem solving at the community level,” she added.
The sponsorship covers the full Nursing and Midwifery Council examination fees for all 20 beneficiaries.
Dr. Saleh said she hopes the initiative encourages more women to pursue healthcare careers and inspires other beneficiaries of public support to give back.
