Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has signed an executive order suspending all mining activities across the state with immediate effect.
The decision, according to the governor, is aimed at addressing rising security concerns and illegal mining operations.
Governor Mutfwang explained that the suspension will allow a newly inaugurated technical committee to assess and verify individuals and entities licensed to carry out mining activities in the state.
“Illegal mining activities have been on the rise, contributing significantly to insecurity in various local government areas.
“The influx of foreign nationals into mining areas has exacerbated crimes such as rape, banditry, illegal possession of firearms, drug-related offences, and kidnapping,” Mutfwang stated.
To strengthen regulatory oversight, the Plateau State Government plans to collaborate with the federal government to establish a comprehensive framework for monitoring mining operations.
This partnership, the governor said, will clarify the roles of state and local governments, host communities, and mineral rights.
