Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says the All Progressives Congres (APC)’s control of more than 30 states does not guarantee President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2027 election.
Kwankwaso made the remarks on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State during a town hall meeting attended by NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi.
He argued that the number of governor controlled by political party does not automatically translate into electoral victory, stressing that voters ultimately determine the outcome of elections. Kwankwaso also criticised some governors, particularly in the North, saying their performance in office could make it difficult for them to convince voters during the 2027 campaign.
He also said majority of these governors are unable to face the electorate in their states because they have nothing to show or tell them.
The former Kano State governor reportedly pointed to 2015 presidential election, when then-President Goodluck Jonathan lost his re-election bid despite being an incumbents, as evidence that political control at the state level cannot guarantee victory at the federal level.
“Jonathan was the strong president, and he lost the election. Those who think that because they have more than 30 governors, they cannot lose are making a very big mistake”, he said.
“The trend is that those governors and their parties have performed woefully. It is difficult for many of them to even come out and campaign because, from top to bottom, they did absolutely nothing”, he added.
His comments comes amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the APC seeking to consolidate its control across the country while opposition parties work to build a coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.
