At least eight people have been confirmed dead following a fresh attack in Wereng Kam, Byie community of Riyom local government area of Plateau State.

The incident which occurred on Wednesday night, was reportedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen.

According to eyewitness John Weng, the attackers stormed the community around 5:00pm on Wednesday and continued their rampage until midnight.

Weng, whose father was among those killed, recounted the horror as homes were set ablaze and villagers were forced to flee to safety.

“The herdsmen started burning houses before dark and didn’t stop until around 12:00am. They killed my father in cold blood”, he said tearfully.

The community is now mourning, with several homes destroyed, lives lost, and properties reduced to ashes.

Residents are appealing to government for immediate and decisive action.

“We’ve heard it all before — that security forces are working, that the perpetrators will be brought to book”, a local elder lamented.

“But for how many years will we keep hearing this? For how long must we wait? Who next? Where is next?

This latest attack raises renewed concerns about the persistent insecurity in rural Plateau communities, with many calling on both state and federal authorities to act urgently and decisively.

Recall that several communities had been attacked by armed men in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Riyom local government be areas of the state few months.
