An international businessman who specialized in importation and exportation of goods identified as Chuks Mbaeri was on Friday gunned down by yet to be identified gunmen in Atta, Ikeduru local government area of Imo State.
A source who pleaded annonimity at Atta, told The Authority on Sunday that Mbaeri who hailed from Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state was heading home from Owerri, the Imo state capital, when he was suddenly double crossed by the suspected assailants in his native Mbieri community.
It was gathered that the late Mbieri was forced out of his car and bundled into another waiting car driven by the assasins who drove away with him to Atta Junction, where he was assassinated.
At Atta Junction, he was bundled out of the car by the gunmen who forced him to lie flat on the road and then they shot him severally to ensure he was dead, afterwards the gunmen sped off in their car.
Following his gruesome killing, residents of Atta put several calls to the Imo State Police command which saw the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Taiwo Lakanu arrive the scene of the killing.
Mr Lakanu led a team of homicide detectives to the crime scene to get first hand information on the killing.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem confirmed the murder case, just as he said that the Commissioner of Police has gone to the scene of crime following spirited calls from the public.
“One, Chuks Mbaeri, from Mbieri was double crossed by gunmen at about 18:30 hours and taken to Atta where they killed him. The CP led team of police men to the scene, following distress calls from the members of the public”, Enwerem said.
According to him, no arrests have been made yet concerning the assasination but promised that soon the perpetrators will be apprehended as the command has commenced investigations to unravel the killers of Mbieri.
