Hon. Denty Laven, a member of the Plateau State House of Assembly representing Pankshin South Constituency, was abducted from his home in the Dong area on Monday night.
According to reports, the lawmaker was arriving home when his gateman opened the gate for him to drive in.
Eyewitnesses said that armed men, who were waiting in a vehicle, emerged and forcefully took him away to an unknown location.
The abduction has heightened fears over the security situation in Dong, which has recently seen a surge in kidnappings.
Last week a popular social media food vendor and her brother, a corps member, were kidnapped in the same area later released after a ransom was paid.
Residents now describe the community as increasingly vulnerable to criminal attacks.
The family of Hon. Laven expressed shock over the incident, suggesting that the attackers may have trailed him from a social gathering earlier that day.
As of now, the kidnappers have not contacted the family, and the lawmaker’s condition remains unknown.
Plateau State continues to face mounting security challenges, including violent clashes attributed to Fulani herdsmen, which have resulted in displacement and loss of lives.
Reports indicate that over 500 people were burned in Mangu Local Government Area over the past two years due to such violence.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the ongoing investigation and residents are calling on the government to step up measures to ensure safety of citizens in vulnerable areas.
