Hon. Lady Maureen Chinwe Gwacham, the member representing Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has commenced a Back-to-School initiative involving the distribution of over 20,000 exercise books to pupils across communities in Oyi and Ayamelum Local Government Areas of Anambra State.
The initiative is aimed at supporting schoolchildren, encouraging academic participation and reducing the burden of providing basic learning materials for parents and guardians.
Representing the lawmaker, Lady Amaka Awadiegwu, popularly known as Iyom Chimereze, led the delegation on visits to several schools, beginning in Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area.
The schools visited included Ugwu na Adegbe Primary School, Amadiaba Nteje; Ikenga Primary School, Ikenga Nteje; Ivite Primary School, Ivite Nteje; Umunebo Primary School, Ezinteje Nteje; and Community High School, Nteje.
Addressing pupils and teachers on behalf of the lawmaker, Awadiegwu emphasised the importance of education, particularly in promoting female empowerment, academic excellence and equal opportunities for children.
She described Hon. Gwacham as a woman committed to the future of young people, explaining that the exercise books were being distributed directly to pupils to encourage them to take their education seriously.
Awadiegwu also urged female students to pursue their academic ambitions without allowing traditional gender stereotypes to limit their aspirations.
“Gone are the days when people claimed a woman’s education ends in the kitchen. A woman’s education no longer stops in the kitchen! Today, women are becoming governors, deputy governors and top leaders across the world. There is no position a woman cannot attain if she works hard and stays in school,” she said.
The initiative attracted commendation from teachers, community leaders and pupils, who expressed appreciation to the lawmaker for the educational support.
As the distribution exercise continues across designated schools in Oyi and Ayamelum, the lawmaker’s team reaffirmed her commitment to supporting education, improving learning opportunities and providing essential educational materials to children across the constituency.
