Residents of Angwan Rukuba and Angwan Rogo communities in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, have been rewarded with N1 million for protecting people of opposing faith during the recent violence in the area.
Sunday last week,the residents of Angwan Rukuba shielded several Muslims who were caught in the violence after gunmen attacked the community.
The Muslims were later handed over safety to the security agencies and community leaders. Two days later, when fresh violence erupted in parts of Jos North affecting Christians in Angwan Rogo, residents of that community also protected the Christians and handed them over to the security personnel once the situation calmed.
In a powerful display of unity and courage, former lawmaker representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency Hon. Gwani Muhammad Adam Alkali commended the residents for putting humanity above religious differences and urged others to emulate their example in promoting peaceful coexistence.
The two communities received a total of N1 million – N500,000 each – in recognition of their efforts to protect both Christians and Muslims at a time of heightened tension.
Their actions has been widely praised as a shining example of peaceful co-existence, demonstrating that humanity and solidarity can prevail even in the face of conflict.
At least 28 people were killed when gunmen attacked Ungwan Rukuba community last week on Sunday during the unest.
