The Hollywood power couple have been married for 12 years but in 2015 shocked the world by announcing that they had split; the pair have however been focusing on their marriage for the last two years with many rumours that they were calling off divorce proceedings and were attempting to make it work for the children.
Now the two have filed, reportedly without using lawyers on either side, and allegedly asking for joint legal and physical custody of their three children.
American publication TMZ claims that the in propria persona files were filed together, and both Jen’s petition and Ben’s response ‘mirror each other completely’.
‘The petition and response were filed together, which means it was coordinated,’ writes the gossip site.
It is also thought that the pair have no pre-nuptial agreements, which means all earnings during their 12-year marriage will be split equally unless agreed otherwise, and it is believed the proceedings will be handled out of court and through mediation, thanks to the way the pair have filed the documents.
A source close to the pair revealed that ‘they always planned to divorce despite what people said’.
‘If you look at their first statement it says divorce not separate. They just did it the way they wanted to and did what was best for their kids. There was no catalyst, it was just time.’
Speaking to People magazine, the insider added: ‘Nothing has changed, they are and still will be putting their kids first.’
In June 2015 Ben and Jen confirmed they were separating, one day after their tenth wedding anniversary.
Their statement reads: ‘After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.’
