The last time Manchester United suffered such humiliating defeat at Old Trafford in the hands of an EPL team was in 2011 when their city rivals, Manchester City, walloped them 6-1. Today, the famous ‘Theatre of Dreams’ that has carried the glory days of some of the greatest players in English football is gradually melting down into a theatre of wishes and broken records.

If Manchester United’s coach, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, had plans of reinforcing his attack with 33-year old Edison Cavani before the end of the transfer window, then he may just as well be the first Manager to be sacked this season, and with the current state of United’s defence, there’s no escape route for the woes to come.

Manchester United only had about two minutes to laugh when Bruno Fernandes gave them the lead with yet another fancy penalty kick, but the hammering that followed until the blast of the final whistle was nothing short of sheer humiliation. Tottenham’s, Tanguy Ndombele equalised two minutes after Fernandes’ penalty and Son Heung-min scored in the 7th minute to give Spurs a 2-1 lead. Then in the 28th minute, matters went from bad to worse for United as Anthony Martial was sent off for an altercation with Erik Lamela and Tottenham made the hammering worse from then.

Harry Kane struck in the 30th minute and Son Heung-min bagged his second goal seven minutes later to give Tottenham their fourth goal of the game.

The second half continued from where it stopped with even more woes for United as Serge Aurier and Kane netted one each and Tottenham stormed to a commanding 6-1 win.

The final score did not do justice to the humiliation. And although United are set to announce two potential signings – both attacking players – before the transfer window ends by Monday midnight, Solksjaer may have more to think about to relinquish a defence that is already on the brink on collapse.

For Jose Mourinho, nothing would have interested him more than thumping his former club with such embarrassing humour. And when the bragging bells start coming in, ‘the Special one’ would surely have enough talks in his bag to last United for a lifetime.
