The Progressive Daughters’ Association of Umuoma Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State Nigeria has solicited for the official declaration and approval of Inter-Marital engagements and settlement across the five towns in Umuoma Nekede Autonomous Community.
The call came as a matter of urgency of such demand in the land from various sectors, groups and cadre of people in the area.
The Umuoma progressive daughters therefore took it upon themselves as the Mgbotos of Umuoma Nekede to pilot and facilitate this important call.
Recall that Umuoma community placed it as a law against the land for any son or daughter of the community to have sexual engagement, marital settlement or child bearing with fellow Umuoma person but the recent age of development, human expansion and sexual exposure has countered such a law.
Our correspondent gathered that alot of abortions, cohabitations and sexual plays are going on secretly among the people but in the open they hide to commit such act.
Such law according to them is old and over taken by speed of development and advancement on Human beings on earth. Some neighbouring communities permitted intra community marriages but Umuoma Nekede is allegedly doing theirs in secret.
Meanwhile, it was an eventful outing by the progressive daughters who stormed the palace of HRH, Eze Morrison S.J.Eke, OMADIKE to present their request officially.
9News Nigeria correspondent reports that HRH Eze Morrison Eke obliged all their five point requests which were:
1.That the Daughters’of this community should be accorded their due rights and respect. Women has right to inheritance in whichever family they come from.
2.The Daughters should be given equal opportunity to benefit with their male counterpart from from the community’s endowment.
3.The Daughters’ interests should be represented in the traditional Palace, the Eze’s Cabinet, Eze’s Council and also in the various arms of governance within the community including the UPA.
4.That the daughters should be given the right to vote and be voted for in all the elective positions in the community and not be disenfranchised anymore.
5.The daughters demanded for the repealation of the law resisting intermarriage in all Umuoma with no town within the community being in exception.
OMADIKE in respect to the last request asserted that his position as the traditional ruler would not allow him to support or spearhead the abrogation of that law but he assured the ladies that he will table our matter at the appropriate quarters.
On this note, he promised to do everything within his powers to make sure that all the demands receive immediate attention.
The delegation was led by their President, Hon.Lady Mercia Morgans alongside her notable executives which included, Vice President-Mrs Gloria Nkwopara(Denagwu), Secretary-Mrs Patsy Ugoeze(Umuikea), Treasurer-Mrs Ifeoma OGU.(Umuezereokam), Mrs. Chinwe Okere(Umuogba).
This indeed is a plus in the history of mankind in Umuoma Nekede Autonomous community, if the request is granted to cut down some secret engagements concerning sexual relationship in the community, as 9News Nigeria reports.
