The Imo State Government has appointed New acting Chief Judge in the person of Theophilus Nzeukwu. His appointment takes immediate effect as communicated to him after the process of screening by the Imo State House of Assembly IMHA.
Haven been appointed as the new acting Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu is charged with enormous responsibility as a seasoned jurist with a distinguished legal career spanning decades to improve the speed of justice procedure and rule of law in the state as 9News Nigeria reports.
Barristers who spoke with 9News shortly after his appointment, were optimistic that Justice Nzeukwu’s elevation is therefore expected to mark a new chapter in the justice delivery of the State.
Born in Egwedu-Atta Autonomous Community, Njaba LGA, Justice Nzeukwu’s journey to the the judiciary began with his early education at Central School No. II Atta and Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu (B.S.C). He further honed his intellect at Federal Government College, Kano before proceeding to the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he studied law.
After graduating from the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, he completed his National Youth Service (NYSC) at the Ministry of Justice, Etina, Akwa-Ibom State, before commencing legal practice at A.B.C. Iketuonye & Co. (SAN Chambers), Owerri.
Justice Nzeukwu’s judicial career has been one of steady ascent. He served as:
- Chief Magistrate, Imo State Judiciary.
- Deputy Chief Registrar, High Court of Owerri.
- Chief Registrar, High Court of Justice, Owerri.
- High Court Judge, Owerri, before his latest appointment.
His leadership qualities were evident early, having served as Prep Prefect during his secondary school days at Federal Government College, Kano.
Beyond the courtroom, Justice Nzeukwu is a devout Catholic and a Knight of St. Mulumba (KSM), reflecting his strong moral and ethical grounding.
He is also a family man, happily married with two sons. His hobbies include discussing the Word of God, lawn tennis, and football, showcasing a balanced life of intellect, spirituality, and physical vitality.
As he assumes office, it the expectation of Ndi Imo to see Justice Nzeukwu bring stability, integrity, and efficiency to Imo judicial system targetted at improving the rule of law in Imo State.
Recall that Hon. Justice Nzeukwu took over from the former Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice Theresa Eberechukwu Chukwuemeka-Chikeka.
Justice Chikeka was confirmed by the Imo State House of Assembly on June 28, 2022. Prior to her confirmation, she served as the Acting Chief Judge of Imo State.
Justice Chukwuemeka-Chikeka also had a distinguished career, with various positions held including Director of Civil Litigation, Permanent Secretary, Judicial Service Commission, and Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice.
