At least six people have been publicly caned in Indonesia’s Aceh province after being found guilty of violating Islamic Sharia laws, including adultery, and alcohol consumption.
A woman fainted after she and her partner were canned 140 times each as they were caught and found guilty in Indonesia.
The couple, a man and woman, were struck on their backs and a rattan stick in a public park on Thursday in the province of Aceh while dozens of people watched.

Sexual relations between unmarried couple are strictly outlawed in Aceh, the only place in Indonesia to impose a version of Sharia.
The 21-year-old woman collapsed after enduring her brutal punishment and was escorted to an ambulance.
In total, the pair received 140 lashes: 100 for sex outside marriage and 40 for consuming alcohol, according to the head of Banda Aceh’s Sharia police, Muhammed Rizal.
The woman was pictured being wheeled off in stretcher following her beatings. The couple was among six people flogged for breaking Islamic code, including a Sharia police officer and his female partner, who were caught in close proximity in private place.
“As promised, we make no exceptions, especially not for our own members. This certainly tarnishes our name”, Rizal said.
Despite criticism, Aceh authorities maintain that the enforcement of Sharia law reflects the religious and cultural values of the province and serve as a deterrent against moral violations.
