Political Tension in Rivers State, A Call For Reflection

Ambassador Emmanuel David Atseyinku, the South-South Bureau Chief of 9News Nigeria, has raised a crucial question regarding the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. He probes whether the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike, is a catalyst behind the persistent discord between his supporters and those of his successor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

During the 2023 gubernatorial campaign, Wike played a pivotal role in promoting Fubara as the ideal candidate for leadership in Rivers State. He consistently expressed confidence in Fubara’s capabilities, famously stating, “No SIM, no phone,” emphasizing the loyalty he enjoyed from the former Accountant General.

However, recent developments have raised eyebrows. Wike appears to be undermining Fubara, the very individual he once championed. This shift has led to criticisms of Wike’s actions, which Ambassador Atseyinku describes as shameful, considering his previous accolades for Fubara’s leadership qualities.

On October 19, 2024, Wike hosted a celebration in the state following a favorable appeal judgment concerning the defection of 27 lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC). While the event saw a strong turnout of Rivers State dignitaries, it was notably absent of Governor Fubara, prompting further speculation about the state of their relationship.

Ambassador Atseyinku questions whether Wike finds satisfaction in the ongoing political strife in Rivers State. As a seasoned statesman and current minister, there are expectations for him to foster peace rather than exacerbate tensions.

This situation highlights the need for introspection among political leaders in Rivers State and a collective effort to prioritize the well-being of the community over personal or factional interests.

The political climate in Rivers State remains fragile, and the actions of its leaders will significantly impact its future. The question now is whether reconciliation and unity can be achieved amidst the turmoil.
