Israel Bars UN Secretary-General António Guterres from Entering the Country

In a dramatic move, the Israeli government has declared UN Secretary-General António Guterres as persona non grata, effectively banning him from entering the country. This unprecedented decision comes amid escalating tensions in the region and a dispute over Guterres’ response to recent attacks.

According to Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, the decision was made because Guterres “has yet to denounce the massacre and sexual atrocities committed by Hamas murderers on 7 October, nor has he led any efforts to declare them a terrorist organization.” Katz further accused Guterres of “giving backing to terrorists, rapists, and murderers from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and now Iran – the mothership of global terror.”

The move is seen as a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between Israel and the United Nations. Israel has long been critical of the UN’s perceived bias against the country, and this latest decision is a clear sign of the government’s frustration.

Guterres, for his part, has condemned the recent Iranian missile attack on Israel, stating that “these attacks paradoxically do nothing to support the cause of the Palestinian people or reduce their suffering.” However, his initial response to the October 7th Hamas attack, in which he acknowledged the “suffocating occupation” of the Palestinian people, appears to have been the catalyst for the Israeli government’s decision.

The UN chief has not yet responded directly to the ban, but the US State Department has criticized the move, stating that it is not “productive in any way.”

The situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation. The ban on Guterres’ entry into Israel is likely to further strain the already tense relationship between the UN and the Israeli government, with the potential for wider diplomatic consequences.
