While customers across Africa have long championed the “Pay-As-You-Go” model for pay-TV, Multichoice has taken a different turn—launching a weekly subscription service instead.
The pilot, unveiled in Uganda under the catchy banner “Ka Weekie”, marks a strategic shift aimed at meeting viewers halfway without fully giving in to the per-minute payment calls.
For as low as Shs5,000, DStv and GOtv users in Uganda can now enjoy a week’s worth of their favorite shows, news, and entertainment—no long-term strings attached.
This initiative, according to the company, is a response to changing lifestyles and economic realities, particularly among younger viewers, students, travelers, and those on tighter budgets.
“It’s all about putting power back into the viewer’s hands,” said Collin Asiimwe, Multichoice Uganda’s head of marketing. “We want to give people the freedom to choose when and how they pay, without losing the value and quality they’re used to.”
Ka Weekie is not just a new billing method; it’s a fresh approach to television in a time when streaming giants continue to disrupt the market. Existing subscribers can toggle between weekly and monthly payment plans as needed, keeping their current channel line-ups intact. First-time users, however, will need to sign up with a full month before unlocking weekly options.
Importantly, Multichoice emphasized that this shorter cycle doesn’t mean limited content. Subscribers still get full access to the bouquets they choose—just with more flexible billing.
With Uganda as the test bed, there’s buzz that Ka Weekie might soon land in other markets like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. As the battle for viewer loyalty intensifies, Multichoice’s move could set a new pace for how pay-TV is packaged and consumed across the continent.
