The Imo State Government has attributed the postponement of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, to ongoing court proceedings.
The State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, disclosed this on Friday, explaining that some opposition political parties had approached the court seeking to stop the election.
According to Emelumba, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) instituted separate legal actions against the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), raising various grounds in their bid to halt the election.
He said the substantive suits had been adjourned until October 30, 2026, for hearing.
The Commissioner said the state government considered it inappropriate to proceed with the election while the legal challenges remained pending before the courts.
“No law-abiding government will proceed with such an election when two political parties are in court against its conduct,” Emelumba said.
He added that the government was hopeful that the judicial proceedings would be resolved expeditiously, after which a new date for the local government elections would be announced.
