Sani Ahmed Kaitafi, an indegene of Yobe State, has expressed utmost displeasure over the handling of patients at General Hospital Gashu’a in Yobe State.
In a letter addressed to Governor Mai Mala Buni and the Commissioner for Health, and posted on his verified Facebook handle, Kaitafi detailed the ordeal of his acquaintance battling Chronic Kidney Disease.
The patient he said was rushed to the hospital at 6am on Saturday last week barely breathing.
He noted that the patient was only attended to by a very hard working and dedicated nurse who did all within his powers.
Kaitafi explained that he had to call the patient’s physician in Kano on a video call to help resuscitate him.
The Kano-based doctor instructed them to run tests and administer drugs on the patient, and later advised transferring the patient to Kano on oxygen support using the ambulance.
This according to Kaitafi, was after the patient spent over 24 hours at the emergency wing without a doctor seeing him.
He added that the ambulance at the hospital was similarly not functioning, making the transfer plan a mirage.
“We had to get a commercial vehicle to transport the patient with an oxygen tank and a nurse,” he noted in the letter.
Kaitafi believes that this is not the first time such is happening and prayed it will not be the last.
He also promised to bring the matter to the attention of authorities.
“I am hoping and praying something serious is done to avert medical crises in the state’s health institutions,” he added.
Kaitafi is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and politician in Yobe.
