President William Ruto has said Kenya will construct a refinery in Lamu that will be larger than the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.
Ruto disclosed this after touring the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos State, at the invitation of Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote.
The Kenyan President said the visit came ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, scheduled to take place in Kenya next week.
According to Ruto, the Dangote Refinery has a crude oil refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and produces more than 100 million litres of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel daily.
He also highlighted the infrastructure supporting the Nigerian refinery, noting that Dangote Group had constructed about 120 kilometers of subsea pipelines to transport crude oil from ships to the refinery.
Ruto described the project as evidence of what African governments, investors and financial institutions can achieve through collaboration.
The Kenyan president said the planned refinery in Lamu would have a significant impact on Kenya and the wider East African region by improving fuel reliability and security.
“The refinery whose construction we launch in Kenya next week will be bigger,” Ruto said.
According to the President, the project is expected to create about 60,000 jobs when completed, while its operations could stimulate the emergence of several downstream industries.
He listed fertiliser, chemicals and packaging production among the industries expected to develop around the refinery.
