A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, representing Aba North & South Federal Constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has described his October 2024 altercation with a Bolt driver as an unintended episode that increased his public visibility.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, 28, January 2025, Ikwechegh jocularly referred to himself as “the man who makes things disappear.”
The lawmaker explained that while the confrontation was regrettable, it provided an opportunity for personal growth and reconciliation.
“What happened was quite unfortunate, but I took it as an avenue to build a relationship with the young man. Today, we are friends.
“The video was a low moment, and I felt the sanctity of my home was being desecrated. However, what people saw does not define who I am. I’ve been in the public space for a long time without any scandals.”Ikwechegh said.
The lawmaker further revealed that the matter, which was taken to court, was struck out for lack of merit.
“We’ve moved on. The young man is now my friend, and I am very close to his pastor and bishop. It’s all in the past,” he added.
According to 9News reports in October 2024, the confrontation sparked outrage across Nigeria after a video surfaced showing Ikwechegh assaulting the Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
In the video, the lawmaker accused the driver of being disrespectful for not stepping out of his vehicle to deliver goods-snails ordered from a vendor.
The disagreement escalated, with Ikwechegh delivering three slaps to the driver’s face while threatening him, saying, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen.”
Despite the provocation, Abuwatseya maintained his composure throughout the altercation.
Although Ikwechegh claims to have moved past the controversy, the episode remains a talking point, with the public divided on his conduct and his attempts to repair the damage caused.
