Many African Pastors Have Juju, Says Archbishop Kattey

Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, the retired Dean of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has said that many pastors in African countries still had a strong belief in juju powers.

Kattey, who disclosed this at the send-off of the pastor in charge of Dominion Life of Excellence Church, Ogale, Eleme in Rivers State, Pst. J.C. Winner, on Sunday, said many Christian priests along the West African coast keep juju in their pockets while preaching in church.

Pastor Winner is leaving Nigeria for Liberia on missionary work.

“No matter what you say about Nigeria, Nigeria is still the best spiritually,” the former Archbishop of the Niger Delta Province of the Anglican Church said, explaining that Nigeria is much safer spiritually than other African countries.

“On the West African coast, almost every family has its juju. Some pastors preach with juju in their pockets. Some pastors here are still living in immorality,” he further disclosed.

He recalled that when he was ordained priest in 1986, an old woman from his hometown advised him to go to Ogoni, Calabar, or Benin to “cook” himself to get protection from spiritual attackers.
