Meningitis: Yobe records meningitis cases

Suspected cases of Cebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) have been reported in Fika and Nguru Local Government Areas of Yobe.

Dr Bello Kawuwa, the state Commissioner for Health, confirmed this to our sources in Damaturu on Thursday, saying that the cases are under investigation.

“We are still investigating the cases to determine whether they are CSM; the outcome of the investigation will provide us with the true position,” he said.

However, the commissioner did not give the number of cases recorded so far.

Kawuwa said medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas to access and control the situation.

“We are on top of the situation and we are doing everything possible to control the cases in the two local government areas,” he said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has joined the state medical team to check the situation.

A WHO staff says that WHO are supporting the state team to control the situation”.

Meanwhile, the state Ministry of Health has embarked on sensitisation campaign against communicable diseases, including CSM, as the hot season intensifies.

FCT had also recorded about five cases since the outbreak of meningitis in the northern part of the country.
