The Headquarters, Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI Maiduguri, has made clarification on the Wednesday night incident that caused panic within the city.
The force said that the explosions heard around the barracks area and environs was caused by a fire incident that rocks an ammunition storage facility located inside the barracks.
This was disclosed in a statement by the operation’s spokesman, Captain Reuben Kovangiya, who said that the explosions and fire incident that followed, was caused by the current high temperatures in Maiduguri.
He however noted that, the situation has been brought under control with the combined efforts of the Borno State Fire Service Department and other fire trucks from security agencies.
“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been deployed to protect the public and prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the situation,” he added.
The military also urged the general public to ignore any speculations of an attack in the city and called on residents to remain calm.
The Wednesday night incident has caused panic within Maiduguri with hundreds of residents around Giwa Barracks displaced, in fear of a potential attack.
However, it was gathered this morning that most of the residents have returned to their houses on Thursday morning.
