By Taofeek LAWAL, Abuja

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN) FCT Chapter has congratulated former Super Eagles striker, Jude Odion Ighalo as an ambassador of the National Principal’s Cup.

Chairman of SWAN FCT Chapter, Bunmi Haruna. said the announcement by the Minister  of Youth and sports Development, Sunday Dare, is a testimony that Ighalo has paid his dues as a national team player and commended the minister for the gesture. Haruna described Ighalo’s appointment as a round peg in a round hole.

He said, “Being chosen ahead of his teammates is worth celebrating because Ighalo has been a good ambassador of Nigeria and has distinguished himself both within and outside the shores of the country.  He did not only become the first Nigerian to play for the great Manchester United club side but also distinguished himself as a top striker that he has always been, scoring vital goals for the club.”

“As an association, we are proud of him, he has set the ball rolling and as a role model, he has not disappointed, knowing full well that so many young lads are looking up to him. We are also aware of his humanitarian gestures towards widows and the less privileged in the society. The Ighalo football academy and orphanage home in Lagos are just some of his laudable projects. We want to urge him not to relent and can only pray for God to continue to increase him on every sides. We are also using this opportunity to call on other well meaning Nigerians to reach out to people in need. Once again, a big congratulations to Ighalo and believing that this will spur him to do.more for the society,” Haruna added.

Ighalo was named as National Principal Cup Ambassador when he paid a courtesy visit to the minister of Youth and Sports at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium , Abuja last Tuesday.
