Muhammad Abacha, son of late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the forthcoming Kano State governorship election.

The development was announced on Wednesday by the PDP Kano State chairman, Bello Gambo-Bichi, during the party’s replacement governorship primary.

Gambo-Bichi also announced former PDP state chairman and commissioner, Yusuf Ado-Kibiya, as Abacha’s running mate.

He said the replacement primary followed the withdrawal of the party’s earlier candidate, Muhammad Dalha, after consultations among PDP stakeholders in Kano and Abuja.

According to the chairman, the exercise was conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act and relevant PDP guidelines, with representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance.

Gambo-Bichi said Kibiya’s selection followed reconciliation between two factions within the Kano PDP.

He added that the reconciliation also resulted in changes to some of the party’s National and State Assembly candidates.

The PDP chairman described the development as the beginning of a new phase for the party in Kano.

He urged party leaders, members and supporters to unite behind Abacha and the other PDP candidates ahead of the election.

The chairman of the replacement primary election panel, Abba Abdullahi, formally declared Abacha the party’s nominee.

Abdullahi said the exercise complied with the PDP constitution, party guidelines, relevant regulations and applicable electoral laws.

However, he noted that Abacha’s nomination remains subject to statutory procedures and scrutiny by the appropriate electoral authorities.

He congratulated Abacha and called on PDP members and stakeholders to support and cooperate with the new candidate ahead of the governorship election.

Former Kano State Governor and former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned recent comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir at an event in Kano.

Kwankwaso expressed concern over what he described as statements capable of promoting division and disunity in the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, the former governor said it was troubling that such remarks were coming from a religious leader of Sheikh Jingir’s stature and influence.

“At this critical moment in our nation’s history, statements that promote division and disunity must be firmly discouraged,” Kwankwaso said.

He stressed that political and religious leaders have a solemn responsibility to promote truth, foster unity and advance reconciliation, rather than make statements capable of undermining national cohesion.

Kwankwaso also distanced the people of Kano from the statements, insisting that the comments should not be interpreted as representing the position of the people of the state.

“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks,” he said.

The former governor also referenced the 2027 general elections, describing them as an opportunity for Nigerians to assess the performance of the current administration and express their verdict at the polls.

According to him, Nigerians would have the opportunity to reward good governance and reject poor performance with their votes.

“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls. This administration has earned the latter,” Kwankwaso stated.

He urged political and religious leaders to exercise responsibility in their public statements and use their influence to promote peace, unity and reconciliation across the country.

Kwankwaso concluded by praying for the continued progress and unity of Nigeria.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stepped up efforts to recruit former Kano State governorship candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, ahead of the 2027 general elections, offering him its governorship ticket and pledging strong campaign support.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that senior party leaders have been holding consultations with Gawuna’s political associates in an attempt to persuade the former deputy governor to contest under the ADC platform.

According to the sources, the party has proposed several political incentives, including opportunities for Gawuna’s loyalists to secure nominations for State House of Assembly and House of Representatives seats.

The ADC is also said to have assured the former APC governorship candidate of substantial financial backing should he agree to lead the party’s campaign in Kano.

Prominent political figures reportedly involved in the negotiations include former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Ambassador Faruk Yabo, who are believed to be championing the move.

Although Gawuna has consistently expressed loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement, insiders say the ADC’s overtures have sparked fresh discussions within his political camp.

Sources further revealed that the party has yet to announce the winner of its Kano governorship primary between Ibrahim Khalil and Ibrahim Little, a delay allegedly linked to ongoing talks with Gawuna.

Gawuna, who served as Kano State deputy governor and contested the 2023 governorship election under the APC, remains a significant political force with considerable grassroots influence across the state.

Political analysts believe that if Gawuna eventually joins the ADC and secures its ticket, his candidacy could reshape the political landscape of Kano and intensify competition ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Neither Gawuna nor ADC officials had publicly responded to the reports at the time of filing this report.

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

No fewer than 38 lawmakers reportedly signed the notice of impeachment, which was presented during plenary in line with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) that outlines procedures for removing a deputy governor from office.

While presenting the notice, a member of the Assembly said the impeachment move was based on several allegations relating to Gwarzo’s conduct while he served as Commissioner for Local Government and later as deputy governor.

“This article of impeachment is a formal notice by the Kano State House of Assembly in compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution against Aminu Abdussalam,” the lawmaker stated.

According to the notice, the deputy governor allegedly received kickbacks from the 44 local government councils in the state between June 2023 and January 2024.

The lawmakers claimed that Gwarzo collected about N1.5 million monthly from each council, amounting to roughly N66 million per month and about N462 million within the seven-month period.

The notice further alleged that between February and July 2024, the deputy governor received additional payments totalling N726 million under the pretext of executing special assignments for the councils.

Lawmakers also accused him of abusing his office by allegedly facilitating the release of N440 million from the 44 local government councils to Novomed Pharmaceuticals Limited, in violation of state procurement and fiscal management regulations.

The Assembly said the allegations collectively amount to gross misconduct and resolved to proceed with the impeachment process in line with constitutional provisions.

Kano State Government on Saturday, flagged off a Smart Transport Solution aimed at improving transportation management and security in the state, through deployment of modern tracking technology.

Speaking during the flag-off, the state’s Commissioner for Transport, Mr Haruna Isa-Dederi, described the initiative as a technological innovation which will enhance safety and efficiency in Kano’s transport sector.

He said that the system which is new in Kano, is already in utilised in major cities worldwide.

“By the time anyone arrives in Kano, the system ensures they are captured at the station and monitored through cameras as they move into the city.

“Information is transmitted in real-time to the Police, Ministry of Transportation, and the Cabinet Office,” he explained.

He noted  that the initiative targets all commercial vehicles,  including: tricycles, taxis, buses, trailers, tankers, and jeeps, with plans to extend same to private vehicles.

Isa-Dederi also emphasised the importance of private-sector involvement, noting that the initiative aligns with the state’s comprehensive transport policy, which provides a legal framework to encourage investment in road and rail infrastructure.

The Commissioner noted that full deployment of the system will commence on Monday, following awareness and training sessions with transport unions and local government members.

On his part, Head of Operations of As & Aj Company, Dr. Aminu Umar-Maigari, said the system, which integrates information technology into transport operations, is designed to protect commuters, public property and improve transport management.

“This initiative would improve transparency and accountability in transport operations” he said

Umar-Maigari added that the application is free for users, with minimal costs for Know Your Customer (KYC) registration and tracker installation at the sum of N28,000 with 10 per cent subsidy by the government for first one million subscribers.

On his part, Chairman of the Vehicle Owners and Transporters of Nigeria (VOTOR), Comrade Nazifi Gidan-Kudi, commended the initiative, describing same as timely and necessary.

He said the Smart Transport Solution would help check excesses among commercial vehicle operators, address unsafe driving and riding practices, and enhance overall security across the state.

The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed the approval while addressing members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Director General of Media and Publicity, Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The governor explained that his administration’s decision to realign with the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), was strategic, aimed at securing critical development projects for the state.

The new rail system is expected to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit network, linking key districts across Kano metropolis. 

Authorities say it will enhance resident mobility, facilitate trade, attract investment, and improve the overall quality of life.

Describing the project as a landmark intervention, Governor Yusuf said it would reposition Kano as a leading transportation hub in Northern Nigeria. 

He further assured residents that the state government would collaborate closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent execution and maximum benefits for the people.

The governor also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the initiative and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting federal efforts through complementary policies and infrastructure development.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday embarked on a sensitisation campaign to minimize road  crashes in Kano during the festive season.

The campaign, tagged “2025 Operation Eagle Eye”was flagged off by the NEMA Kano Operations Office.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Head of Operations, NEMA Kano Office, Dr Nura Abdullahi, said that the operation was designed to sensitise motorists and commuters on safe road usage.

Abdullahi represented by NEMA Head of Search and Rescue, Mr Abdulhadi Tukur, said that the exercise is aimed at complementing the efforts of the FRSC in educating commuters and motorists.

“The campaign would help reduce road crashes by enlightening road users and ensuring stricter compliance with traffic rules and regulations” he said

According to him, the initiative was in support of the FRSC’s mandate to ensure safer roads across the country, especially during the ember months with increased travels.

He noted that NEMA personnel and response equipment would be deployed to strategic locations to ensure prompt response to road accidents and other emergencies during the Yuletide.

“NEMA is always ready to cooperate with other critical stakeholders, particularly in disaster management, to curb the menace of road traffic crashes,” he said

He urged drivers to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to protect lives, property and vehicles.

Abdullahi cautioned motorists against dangerous driving, such as reckless overtaking, overloading and the use of mobile phones while driving.

“Our aim is to record zero tolerance for road traffic crashes, especially during and after this Yuletide period,” he said.

The Kano State Government has issued an Executive Order banning a group called ‘Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi,’ describing it as illegal and dangerous.

Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi-Waiyya, confirmed this on Friday, saying the order was signed by Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf.

He said the order was issued under the governor’s constitutional powers to maintain public peace and enforce state laws in line with section 5(2).

According to him, the Kano State Hisbah Board Law recognises only the official Hisbah Board as the body authorised to coordinate Hisbah activities.

“The government is concerned that some individuals are mobilising persons under the name ‘Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi’ without lawful authority,” he said.

He noted that the Executive Order declares such mobilisation illegal, warning that a parallel Hisbah structure could undermine the established board.

He said the order forbids anyone from recruiting, assembling or training people to operate any parallel Hisbah or similar enforcement outfit.

“The formation or promotion of any group named ‘Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi’, or similar, is unlawful and void,” the commissioner said.

He added that the order confirms the Hisbah Board as the only lawful body for Hisbah duties and prohibits impersonation of its authority or symbols.

Abdullahi-Waiyya said the governor has directed all security agencies to investigate the organisers and sponsors of the group and halt their actions.

The order also warns that joining or supporting the group amounts to a breach of state laws.

“Anyone recruited or approached by the group should disengage immediately and report to security agencies or the nearest Hisbah office,” he said.

He added that violators face prosecution for unlawful assembly, impersonation and forming an unauthorised enforcement outfit.

“This order takes immediate effect and will be gazetted by the Kano State Government Printer,” he said

Members of an Islamic movement group in Kano State staged a protest on Saturday to condemn statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently claimed that Christians in Nigeria are being subjected to genocide and warned of possible military intervention.

The protesters wielded placards with messages such as “We condemn Trump’s threat to attack Nigeria,” “There is Christian genocide in Nigeria,” and “America wants to control our resources.”

The rally was shared online by Hon. Nuhu Sada, SDP candidate for the Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Zaria Kewaye Constituency in the 2025 bye-election.

On X (formerly Twitter), he posted photos of the protest, captioning them, “Thousands of people in Kano State have come out in a protest to strongly condemn the remarks made by U.S President Donald Trump about attacking Nigeria. What is your opinion?”

Trump had earlier designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians and warned that the U.S might intervene militarily if the government failed to address the killings.

The protest in Kano follows a similar demonstration in Lagos, reported by PUNCH Online, where participants wielded placards reading “Nigerians united against U.S. threat of military invasion” and chanted:

Leave us alone oh, leave us alone. America, leave us alone.”

The Federal Government has described the allegations as false.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the claims misrepresent Nigeria’s security and religious landscape.

Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved a bill to outlaw same-sex marriage and other immoral practices in the state.

The bill, which is to be transmitted to the State House of Assembly, prohibits same-sex marriage and practices like Madugo and Liwadi (lesbianism and homosexualism)

Dawakin-Tofa said the governor gave the approval during the 31st Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Kano on Friday.

He said that Yusuf emphasised that the bill’s objective is to uphold Kano’s cultural and religious heritage.

According to him, Yusuf warned that offenders would face strict legal consequences if the bill is passed into law, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting the state’s moral integrity.

Gov. Abba Yusuf, of Kano State on Thursday, inaugurated the payment of N6 billion gratuity and death benefits to 3,313 pensioners in the state.

9news Nigeria reports that the official inauguration ceremony of the 4th Tranche payment to some categories of retirees from 2020 to 2023 was held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

9news Nigeria also reports that the Governor presented a dummy cheque of N4.5 billion to the Chairman of the Pension Board, Alhaji Habu Fagge, for the benefits of the senior citizens.

Yusuf reiterated the commitment of his government to resolving the years of hardship faced by the retirees and their families as well enhancing the welfare of civil servants in the state.

He said the payment covered different batches of beneficiaries, including the backlog accumulated over the years, which had subjected many retirees and their families to untold hardship.

Yusuf recalled that his administration had earlier released N6 billion to the first batch of 4,915 beneficiaries and another N5 billion to the second batch of 1,722 retirees.

The governor further revealed that an additional 1,579 beneficiaries received payments amounting to N5 billion on Jan.9,

“Today, this government is releasing the sum of N6 billion for the payment of death benefits and gratuities to retirees within the range of N2.5 million and below from the year 2020 to 2023,” he said.

Yusuf said with the latest release, the total amount paid so far stood at N22 billion, adding that another N5 billion had already been set aside for the next batch for further payments of retirees by August.

“We shall settle all outstanding pension benefits to the tune of over N48 billion to alleviate the sufferings of our senior citizens,” he said.

The governor commended the management and staff of the Pension Board, as well as the EFCC and ICPC, for their doggedness, investigation and reportage on the issue of the 324 houses built during the previous administration as part of pension investments.

He, however, warned that the government would not condone any form of underhand dealings, stressing that anyone found wanting making dubious arrangements or favouritism would be dealt with accordingly.

Yusuf urged the pensioners to remain patient, assuring them that all their entitlements would be cleared.

The Executive Chairman, Kano State Pension Trustee Fund, Alhaji Habu Fagge, said the board earlier had a backlog of N48 billion from previous administration, out of which the present administration has payed the total sum of N22 billion.

Also speaking, the National President, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Mr Godwin Abumisi, commended the governor for his giant and remarkable strides in paying retirees their gratuity and death benefits.

Abumisi named Yusuf a ‘Star Performance Governor’.

The Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu  Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the Emirs of Kano, Rano, and Karaye, commended the giant strides of the governor, especially toward retirees as well as Kano residents.

Hajiya Amina Muhammad, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, applauded the kind gesture of the governor, saying it would go a long way in alleviating their sufferings.

Fifty-eight inmates from various custodial centres in Kano State are currently sitting for the 2025 National Examination Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), a rehabilitation initiative funded by the State Government.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Kano State Command, described the development as a “milestone achievement” in its ongoing efforts to reform and reintegrate inmates through access to formal education.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Musbahu Kofar Nasarawa, the state government covered all registration costs for the participating inmates. 

He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering commitment to inmate welfare and reformation.

“This gesture will go a long way in boosting the morale of the inmates and providing them with a second chance at education and a brighter future,” Nasarawa stated.

Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State  has approved the appointment of the Emir of Lafia, Sidi Muhammad Bage, as the new Chancellor, North-West University, Kano.

Born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, emir holds a diploma and an LLB from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.

His distinguished legal career began as a Magistrate in 1982, later ascending to the position of High Court Judge in 1992, then to the Court of Appeal in 2007, and ultimately to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in January 2017.

In March 2019, following the passing of his predecessor, Isa Mustapha Agwai I, he was appointed as the 17th Emir of Lafia, a role through which he has become widely respected as a custodian of peace, justice, and community cohesion.

By entrusting Bage with the chancellorship, North-West University, Kano, continues its tradition of drawing from Nigeria’s most accomplished and principled leaders to serve in ceremonial and advisory capacities.

 Yusuf underscored that appointing a retired Supreme Court Justice and revered traditional ruler reflects the university’s dedication to excellence, integrity, and national development.

The Governor further highlighted Bage’s sterling record of fairness, deep social engagement, and leadership—qualities expected to inspire the university community and help steer the institution toward greater achievements.

The appointment letter was presented to the emir on Sunday by the Chairman of the University’s Council, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, in company of the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa.

At least 21 athletes and officials from Kano State have tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident while returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Daka Tsalle Bridge in the Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State. 

According to eyewitnesses, the bus conveying the delegation hit a deep pothole, causing it to overturn violently.

Local authorities and emergency responders rushed to the scene, but many of the passengers had already succumbed to their injuries. 

Several others were critically injured and have been taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

The victims were part of Kano State’s official contingent to the National Sports Festival.

State officials have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, with plans underway to identify the deceased and support their grieving families.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has arrived in Kano State to pay a condolence visit to the Kano State Government and the families of the 16 travelers who were brutally murdered in Uromi, Edo State.

The Government of Kano State has begun an inspection tour of salary validation centres to promote transparency and accountability in salary administration across the state.

9News Nigeria reports that the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, led the inspection team to verify staff records, just as he revealed that the team aims to eliminate payroll discrepancies and ensure rightful salary payments through this inspection initiative.

Ibrahim also used the opportunity to reaffirm the administration’s dedication to eliminating inefficiencies in salary payments and promoting a transparent, accountable payroll system.

“This aligns with the government’s commitment to financial prudence and efficient civil service management in Kano State,” he said.

The inspection tour covered multiple validation centres, engaging with civil servants undergoing the verification process.

At the Pilgrims Welfare Board, Ibrahim assured civil servants of timely salary payments before Sallah, provided they complete the verification exercise.

He emphasised that salary-related challenges have now been effectively addressed by the government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arrested popular Kano-based TikTok influencer, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, for allegedly abusing and mutilating the Naira.

Kunya, who had previously been arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, was taken into custody by operatives of the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate on Sunday, March 16, following weeks of surveillance. 

She had initially been granted administrative bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano but reportedly absconded when she was due to appear in court.

According to EFCC, Kunya allegedly sprayed Naira notes for fun during her stay at Tahir Guest Palace, a hotel in Kano, prompting her latest arrest. 

The commission had been on her trail after she jumped bail over a month ago.

The EFCC confirming the development, reiterated its commitment to enforcing laws that protect the integrity of Nigeria’s currency, warning the public against acts of abuse such as spraying, stamping, or mutilating the Naira, particularly at social events.

Kunya remains in EFCC custody at the Kano Zonal Directorate, where she awaits arraignment.

A high court in Kano State has issued a permanent order restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, from withholding funds allocated to the 44 local government areas of the state.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Ibrahim Musa-Muhammad, came after an ex parte motion filed on November one by the National Union of Local Government Employees, Ibrahim Muhammed, and five others.

The motion sought to prevent the respondents from withholding or delaying allocations essential for local governance.

In November, the court issued an interim order preventing the CBN and AGF from withholding funds for the 44 LGAs pending the determination of the suit.

 Delivering his final judgment, Justice Musa-Muhammad ruled in favor of the applicants, affirming that they had established their case.

“A declaration that withholding these allocations would amount to a breach of the fundamental rights of the residents, inhabitants in the 44 local government councils, as guaranteed under Sections 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, and 46 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” the ruling stated.

Justice Musa-Muhammad also referenced the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, noting that excluding the 44 LGAs from the federation account distribution contradicts its provisions.

“It would be wrong according to Articles 13, 19, 22, and 24 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights for the AGF, CBN, and RMAFC to exclude the 44 LGAs in the distribution of funds accruing from the Federation Account, in line with Section 162(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” he said.

The Emir of Potiskum in Yobe, Umar Bubaram Ibn Wuriwa Bauya, has solicited support of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, towards completion of the mosque project at his palace.

Mr Bauya stated this during a visit to Sunusi II, on Sunday in Kano.

“We are seeking your usual support for the completion of a Juma’at Mosque at my palace which we started about three years ago but the project has been stalled by some financial difficulties.

“We hope that you will help us to complete it,” he said.

Mr Bauya, who is the first emir from the north to pay homage to Sunusi II, said he was at the palace to extend his support to Sanusi.

According to him, history is repeating itself with the second coming of Sunusi II, as the 16th Emir of Kano.

“This kind of historic development happened to me some 26 years ago, and with the help of Allah, I returned as an emir, and I’m living peacefully with my people.

“The return of Emir Muhammadu Sunusi II is a significant milestone that justified that he is a good leader who thinks and acts for his people.

“As such, you should count on my personal support and that of my people,” Bauya said.

Responding, Mr Sanusi thanked Mr Bauya for the visit.

Mr Sanusi, who is also the Nigerian Spiritual Leader of the Tijjaniyya Islamic Sect, said the visit signified unity and togetherness among the traditional leaders, adding that it would impact positively on their lives and security of their subjects.

Kano, Nigeria – A tragic incident occurred in Kano, Nigeria, on Tuesday, when a multiple-story building collapsed, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old woman.

According to the local fire service, the building, which was under construction, had the ground floor occupied when the collapse happened. The incident took place at the Beirut GSM market, a popular location for shops selling mobile phones and related accessories.

“The building was under construction but the ground floor was occupied,” said Nura Abdullahi, the local coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The rescue operation was swift, with three excavators on the scene assisting in the effort. So far, eight people have been rescued from the rubble, including the 35-year-old woman who was declared dead at a local hospital. [1] Six others were taken to the hospital and later released, while one person remains in critical condition.

Building collapses are a worrying occurrence in Nigeria, with several similar incidents reported in recent years. In November 2022, at least five people were killed when a multi-story building collapsed in the capital, Lagos. The law is greater than anyone, including its creators. However, when personal interests clash with the law, it becomes a mere puppet in the hands of the powerful.

The ongoing power struggle in Kano is a spectacle in our 21st century.

When does the law become a toy for its makers?

A Federal High Court order has halted the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, and with the case still pending in court, this should be sufficient to protect the people of Kano from unnecessary turmoil.

The traditional rivalry between the emirs continues to sow discord among the people of Kano, tarnishing the esteemed image of the once-mighty Kano Emirate.

As both parties lay claim to the emirate seat, the Kano Emirate has turned into a battleground for two powerful contenders.

As the judge remarked, “The parties are hereby ordered to maintain the status quo ante pending the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application.”

So why not let the law restore order in Kano?

The exaggerated reactions from both emirs threaten to disrupt the relative peace in Kano. They must prioritize peace to avoid further chaos.

I support neither side but advocate for the High Court’s ruling and the rule of law. It’s essential for everyone to cooperate.

However, I must highlight Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s questionable justification for removing Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, claiming it was a campaign promise. This reason is baseless and unjustifiable for dismissing a public official within any constitutional framework.

Indeed, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero has grounds to contest his removal. According to the court order, he has a legitimate claim to his throne.

Protests on the streets and two emirs in one palace mock the cultural heritage of Hausa land. It is time for the Kano government to act responsibly.

The political maneuvering and campaign promises of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf are setting Kano ablaze with political revenge. Is this how the Kano Emirate Council will operate based on campaign promises? This means no one is safe, not even a mayor in Kano.

Traditional emirates should be like barracks: soldiers come and go, but the barracks remain.

History has witnessed powerful emirs being deposed for constitutional reasons.

Ibrahim Dasuki, the 18th Sultan of Sokoto, was deposed in 1996 by the military government of Sani Abacha, and life went on.

As Folaranmi Ajayi wrote, “The history of dethronement, particularly in Northern Nigeria, dates back to the early 1900s when some emirs refused to pledge allegiance to colonial administrators, leading to their dethronement and banishment for political insubordination.”

Mustapha Jokolo, a retired military officer, became the 19th Emir of Gwandu in 1995. He was dethroned in June 2005 by the Kebbi State Government for insubordination and moved to Obi in Nasarawa State.

Muhammad Sanusi I became the Emir of Kano in 1954 after his father, Emir Abdullahi Bayero, passed away. He was accused of insubordination by the Northern Nigerian administrators and was dethroned in April 1963, then sent to Azare in Bauchi State.

Emir Abubakar Dallaje of Katsina was removed from the throne in 1906 by Sir Frederick Lugard, the Governor General of Northern Nigeria, for insubordination and refusing to pledge allegiance to colonial administrators.

Deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi was found to have breached part 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano Emirate Law 2019.

The conflict intensified when the Governor proposed adding four additional emirates to the State Assembly.

On March 9, 2020, the Kano State Government announced the dethronement of Muhammad Sanusi II on grounds of political insubordination and criticizing the government. Emir Sanusi is known for his outspoken nature.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s removal of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero was a political move, based on a campaign promise. This jeopardizes the heritage and legacy left by colonial masters, turning them into political tools. This is unjust and an affront to Hausa land, and only its sons and daughters can prevent its downfall.

At this critical time, both the State and Federal governments should implement effective mechanisms to resolve the emirate conflict for the sake of security, law, peace, and to heed the court’s ruling.

The alcoholic items that were seized

The Kano State Hisbah Board officer in charge of intoxicants, Idris Ibrahim, revealed that the religious police corps confiscated no fewer than 8,600 bottles of beer loaded in a van that came from Kaduna.

Ibrahim said the alcoholic drinks were seized last Thursday at Kwanar Dangora village along Kano-Kaduna Expressway.

The intoxicants officer added that operatives of the command had been tracking the vehicle from Kaduna until it came into Kano territory.

The Director-General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Laminu Rabiu said it sold 2,600 Hajj seats out of the 5,934 seats allocated to the state by the National Hajj Commission.

He assured that the board had completed all necessary arrangements for the 2024 Hajj in Kano and Saudi Arabia.

The Director-General of the board, Alhaji Laminu Rabiu, made the declaration in Kano on Saturday at the flag-off of the orientation training for 2024 intending pilgrims.

Rabiu therefore urged intending pilgrims to be good ambassadors of Kano State and Nigeria while in Saudi Arabia, noting that the issuance of visas for the 2024 Hajj would end on April 29.

He said; “Intending pilgrims should intensify efforts at ensuring regular attendance at the Hajj orientation exercise.

“The training would be conducted in 13 centres in Kano State; we call on all the intending pilgrims to be prompt in attending the orientation training because they will learn a lot about Hajj.

“We have already completed all the necessary logistics in terms of accommodation, feeding, and transportation during the 2024 Hajj,’’ he assured.

24-year-old man, Musa Abdullahi, of Riga Fada community in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State appeared before a magistrate’s court for allegedly setting ablaze the family house of his ex-girlfriend who dumped him for another suitor.

Abdullahi, who was charged with threat to peace and attempt to commit murder, was also accused of setting fire on the house of the parents of his former girlfriend which led to some parts of her body being burnt.

The prosecution counsel, Barrister Amal Bashir Albasu, prayed the court that the charges should be read to the defendant.

After hearing the charges, Abdullahi pleaded not guilty, and the Judge, Rabi Abdulkadir, ordered that he should be remanded in a correctional centre and adjourned the case to June 1

Baffa, a 42-year-old man, said his pregnant wife was about to be delivered of their fourth baby when he took her to the hospital but unfortunately medical personnel on duty didn’t attend to her. He said he had the old naira notes on him but they rejected them just like they did to many other patients and that no POS was available for transaction, except transfer.

A father of three, Bello Ali Baffa has narrated how his 32-year-old pregnant wife, Shema’u Sani Labaran, who was in labour, bled to death due to rejection of old naira note tendered to settle her medical bill at a Kano State government-owned hospital, Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase specialist hospital.

Baffa revealed that he spent hours waiting for the cashier to confirm payment alert of N8,528 for drugs.

And the medical personnel insisted they would not attend to his wife until he deposited necessary payment and provided evidence.He narrated his experience: “I brought my wife to Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital for delivery because she was already in her ninth months period.

“We were told to open a file. We did that and then a doctor wrote some prescribed drugs for us and they asked me to go and get it. The total amount was N8,300. “On getting to the pharmacy a far distance from the ward, I brought out the money only to be informed that it is old notes, which the hospital is no longer collecting.

“I was directed to another place to make transfer. I brought out my ATM card but the man told me there is no POS machine, that it is only transfer plus N200 charges that is acceptable.

“I complied because my wife was already in labour. “After I did the transfer, it took me another 40 minutes before alert was confirmed and I was issued payment receipt.

No bed space“I quickly rushed to the pharmacy to collect the drug and returned to the ward. On getting to the ward, I was told there was no bed space.

“We waited for another hour before they secured a bed space without mattress. “We accepted it at least for them to attend to her. When the doctor came he told me that my wife had lost a lot of blood and they need fresh blood.

“I had to rush out to call my relatives. Luckily, I got three of them, who they came and donate blood. “Then the doctor asked me to go and get blood bags. I returned to the pharmacy unfortunately they don’t have. I went out of the hospital to buy that with my ATM.

“As if that was not enough, the hospital subsequently requested N4,000 for blood service after I had brought my relatives who donated blood to my wife.“I was told I had to pay additional N4,000 for blood service, I quickly rushed out to the payment point.Dead“At that period it was late and I was afraid my wife had suffered a lot without medical attention.

“So after I made the payment and waiting for alert, I had to beg them to issue the payment evidence, while my brother would remain with them pending when they confirm the transfer.“I also narrated my wife’s condition.

They accepted the condition and the receipt was printed.“I rushed to the ward again and it was at that moment getting to 1am that my wife was taken to labour room.

“The doctor later came out of the labour room at about 3am to break the bad news that my wife and unborn baby could not make it,” he mourned. Although, the husband said he believed Shema’u would die at the appropriate time, he insisted the inhuman treatment of the hospital to his wife because of old naira notes rejection contributed to her sudden death

“I had to rush out to call my relatives. Luckily, I got three of them, who they came and donate blood. “Then the doctor asked me to go and get blood bags.

CSO sets up seven-man Panel Meanwhile, the Kano Civil Society Forum, on Monday, set up a seven-man panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Hajiya Labaran.

In a statement signed by the civil society President, Amb. Ibrahim Waiya and its Public Relations Officer, Dr. M. Adamu, they said it received series of complaint hence the need to wade into the matter.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Kano Civil Society Forum has been drawn to an incident regarding one pregnant woman who lost her life at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Hospital in Kano, over the circumstances surrounding the death.

“The ill-fated death was attributed to an alleged negligence of some medical personnel of the hospital, who were said to have refused to attend to the deceased, when she was in dire need of the medical attention.

“The multiple complaints and calls from different quarters and responsible citizens within and outside Kano, were too enormous to be ignored.

“It is, therefore, against this backdrop that the leadership of the Kano Civil Society Forum, approved the establishment of a seven-man committee to investigate the alleged circumstances surrounding the death of Hajiya Shema’u Sami Labaran and advise accordingly.

“The Committee has three weeks to submit its report,” the statement read.

An Upper Shariah Court sitting in Kano has on Thursday dissolved the 16-year-old marriage of Asiya Ganduje, daughter of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Asiya had approached the court seeking for the dissolution of marriage with her husband, Inuwa Uba on the ground that she is tired and fed up of the marital relationship which produced four children.

The Presiding Judge, Khadi Halliru Aliyu dissolved the marriage while delivering his judgment on the matter on Thursday.

Khadi Aliyu however ordered Ganduje’s daughter to return the N50,000 dowry to her husband, Uba as cost of damage.

The court also struck out Asiya’s husband demand for document of properties which he claimed belongs to him.

Counsel to the plaintiff (Ganduje’s daughter), Ibrahim Nassarawa, said the court gave the judgment based on what is supposed to be the basis of the marriage which is the dowry.

Reacting to the judgment, Lawyer to the husband, Umar I. Umar said they will study the judgment and await the next line of action from his client on whether or not to approach the Court of Appeal on the matter.

He said they tried all possible best to reconcile the relationship especially that she bear four children for him but didn’t yield the desired result.

President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Baba-Othman Ngelzarma, has revealed how President Muhammadu Buhari disappointed pastoralists despite publicly endorsing and supporting his reelection bid in 2019, saying he abandoned them after securing victory at the polls.

Ngelzarma, who briefed journalists in Abuja during the Weekend, also accused the Federal Government of neglecting livestock production in the disbursement of N500 billion spent on agronomy by the Federal Government in the past seven years.According to him, “On the eve of the last election that brought in Buhari for the second term, we endorsed him.

We showed the world that we are with him but thereafter, up till now as I speak to you, nothing has been done.

“Buhari has abandoned the pastoralists. This is very clear, whether Buhari or his lieutenants, the pastoralists have been abandoned by the government.

In the last eight years, nothing tangible was done for pastoralists. While over N500 billion was spent on agronomy, nothing was spent on livestock, almost nothing.

“Go and check all the state government’s budgetary provisions including the federal government’s budgetary provisions. If you see what is budgeted for livestock, you will be surprised.

Livestock is being neglected completely.“How can a multi-trillion Naira business be left in the hands of literate without any form of organization? The government is getting nothing instead of benefiting a lot. This is next to oil. Livestock is next to oil. It can sustain the economy of this country with very good harnessing and organization.

There’s nothing wasteful on the cow. Imagine the value chain – everything on the cow is money.

”Ngelzarma, a former secretary of MACBAN who was recently elected president, regretted that while the rest of the country perceived MACBAN members as criminals who enjoyed special support and protection from the government, they have been at the receiving end of extortion, kidnapping, farmer-herder conflict, cattle rustling and banditry.He also said that there has been a general loss of sense of belonging among the pastoralists in recent times; adding that many of them were seeking to leave the country for more peaceful and saner climes.

Consequently, he blamed the menace on urbanisation and the high demand for land, which he said is not growing, on the encroachment of grazing reserves, national and international cattle routes.

“Pastoralists deserve protection and protection as well against cattle rustlers, kidnappers, bandits and so on. So, we are also under threat, Our trade is also under threat, but for somebody because of crime perpetrated by a few among us, to put us in one basket and say all Fulani are criminals is not fair.

Cattle rearing is a business. We are a trade group doing our legitimate business. MACBAN is not a criminal group.“We are open to attack by all sorts of thieves. We are at the receiving end of these crises including farmers-herders clashes and cattle rustling because pastoralists are the sole owners of the cattle.

98 percent of the cattle in this country are owned by the Fulani and they are victims of kidnapping too. There has never been a time when the pastoralists were supported or assisted after losing their means of livelihood. We also need protection from the government,” Ngelzarma said.

The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa, has said that the state government has approved over N11 billion for the procurement of insecticide-treated nets to address the challenge of malaria disease in the state.

He asserted on Tuesday while flagging off the commencement of the 2022 twin campaigns – the seasonal malaria chemoprevention and maternal newborn and child health week.

According to him, the exercise will be conducted across the 44 local government areas in the state in four consecutive cycles of the rainy season within four days per month beginning from July to October 2022.
Dr. Tsanyawa noted that the program is targeting over 12 million children with aim of preventing them from getting malaria disease.

The commissioner further said the state ministry of health was also integrating with the age-long maternal newborn and child health week conducted twice annually with a range of high impact low-cost interventions offered to pregnant women and children under the age of five with the aims of increasing coverage levels of some important preventive and creating health indicators that allow mothers and children to thrive and develop well.

The Federal High Court in Kano has stopped Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s administration’s request from borrowing N10billion for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the state.
Justice Abdullahi Liman on Friday granted the prayers of a civil society coalition known as Kano First Forum (KFF), saying the status quo must be maintained on the issue of borrowing.

The group had on June 27 filed an exparte motion sworn to by the director-general of the association, Dr. Yusuf Isyaka-Rabiu.

KFF through its counsels, led by Badamasi Suleiman-Gandu, prayed the court to restrain Governor Ganduje from obtaining the N10 billion loan.

KFF is opposing the borrowing of the N10billion on the ground of non-compliance with rules and regulations governing loan transactions.

Police in Kano State has arrested 45 suspected thugs carrying dangerous weapons at Kofar Na’isa and Kwanar Disu in Gwale Local Government Area of the State.

According to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa “On the 26/06/2022 at about 1300hrs, reports were received that groups of thugs (‘Yan Daba) in large number with dangerous weapons blocked Kofar Na’isa and Kwanar Disu, Gwale LGA Kano in an attempt to attack and rob members of the public, especially passersby and road users”.

He said after receiving the report, police were mobilized to the area and immediately cordoned off and the thugs trapped at “Filin Mahaha” were arrested.

He explained that 45 suspected thugs (‘Yan Daba) were arrested with dangerous weapons and large quantities of illicit drugs.

Kiya said all the suspects confessed that they were invited from different parts of Kano Metropolis in the name of attending a wedding ceremony, and converged at “Filin Mahaha” smoking and taking different types of illicit drugs.

He said the Commissioner of Police directed a discreet investigation, after which the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution.

He further reiterated that criminals will have no hiding place in Kano State.

Gunmen have kidnapped the mother of the All Progressives Congress Kano Central senatorial candidate, A. A Zara.

The aged mother of the politician, Hajia Laure Mai-Kunu, was abducted in the early hours of Monday (today) before the Muslims’ call to prayer.

Chairman of Ungogo Local Government, Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, who confirmed the incident, said security agents have informed him officially of the incident.

He said Hajia Laure was kidnapped at her residence in the local government’s Rangaza ward of Zaura village.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, SP Haruna Abdullahi confirmed the incident.

He said the incident happened around 2 am on Monday (today) adding that the Command had since mobilized its personnel intending to rescue the victim and arrest the suspects.

Alhaji Muhammad Abacha, son of former military leader, Sani Abacha has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 general election in Kano State.

Abacha polled 736 votes to defeat his closest rival, Jafar Sani-Bello, who scored 710 votes in the primary election on Wednesday in Kano state.

Announcing the results, the Returning Officer, Hajiya Amina Garba, declared Abacha as the winner of the primaries having scored 736 votes.

Another crisis is currently brewing in the Kano chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) as the endorsed deputy governorship candidate, Murtala Sule Garo is reportedly mulling defection.

A female nude Islamic blogger,Sadiya Haruna has been sentenced to a six-months Islamiyya School participation to learn basic Islamic cultures in Kano.

In a judgement ruled by a kano Sharia court,sitting at the Kano Hisbah Command.

Sadiya was arrested by the Kano Police Command on the allegations of spreading nude videos and pictures on her Facebook page, which created serious problems among some Islamic leaders.

However, after her arrest, the Police Command took her to Sharia Court sitting at the State Hisbah Command and presided over Ali Danzaki.

The Presiding Sharia Court Judge, Ali Danzaki said he sentenced Sadiya Haruna to go back to Islamiyya School at Darul Hadith for a period of six months.

He ruled that Sadiya Haruna would on a daily basis go to the Islamiyya School with the full escort of Hisbah Guards who would ensure that She also signified her presence at the School.

The Kano state government of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has denied the news that the state had planned to implement a sharia law that bans women from driving cars.

In a press release made available to 9News Nigeria, the Kano state commissioner for information, Muhammad Garba stated that such news is false and baseless.

He said that the state has never planned to implement such a law that bans women from driving. He cited Saudi Arabia which is the major source of Sharia law and said that even Saudi Arabia has lifted such a ban and now allows women to drive cars.

There have been unconfirmed reports making the rounds on social media claiming that the Kano state government has in collaboration with the state’s Council of Ulama concluded plans to send a bill that will ban women from driving to the house of assembly.

But the Kano state commissioner for information said that such unfounded and baseless news reports should not be taken seriously as the state had never thought of such a bill.

Taking to his social media timeline, Muhammad Garba said: “I, Abdullah Usman Umar Gadon Kaya, strongly say that this is a piece of fake news. I don’t have any hands in it. It’s the act of enemies who want to crack peace in our dear state (Kano) and Nigeria at large,”

“He said the story, which could not be traced to any credible source, was nothing but the imaginary thinking of the authors,” the statement reads.

“The trending story lacks any credibility and that is why it is wholly attributed to a source that cannot be substantiated.

“Malam Garba pointed out that if at all there was such a plan, the state government does not have to be involved in any secretive meeting to decide on a critical issue that has to do with its teeming populace.

“The commissioner stated further that even Saudi Arabia which for decades had laws that sanctioned women from driving has, after all, lifted the ban in 2018.”

Similarly, one of the state’s Council of Ulama scholars mentioned and linked to the purported bill that will ban women from driving, Abdullah Kaya has distanced himself from such a move thereby described the story as “fake news”.

Now he is more into community participation back home in Delta State, and he is one of the grassroots leaders in his community. It seems like your family has already made a very big impact, which can mean you have big shoes to fill as a scion of such a prestigious family. Growing up, did you have that sense of duty to the people or did it come later? 

Yes, growing up I have always had that sense of duty. I remember that as a child I would see my dad come out dressed in his military uniform and I would shine his shoes for him. I ended up going to military school and wore my first military khaki at the Nigerian Military School, and when I come home for holidays, I would greet him like a military personnel. So, yes, I have always wanted to be part of that circle, that responsibility. 

What would you say in your background prepared you for the positions you hold today? 

I think it’s everything. I work as the Senior Special Assistant to the Kano State governor on Lagos Affairs and I am also the CEO of the Dominic Oneya Foundation which I started in 2017. 

Back in the university, I attended the University of Abuja and my dad was the NFA chairman at that time, he had just retired from the army and handed over to a democratically elected governor in Benue State. He had moved from Kano and became military governor of Benue State, so he handed over to George Akume. I loved to play basketball and we had a basketball court in the female hostel and it was really bad, so I got a couple of friends who would help fix the court. Back then you could tell who was a minister’s son or a governor’s son, you just could tell who was a child of the top class guys. But I was one of those ex-governors sons that stayed in the hostel and people thought Dominic Oneya wasn’t my father that he was probably my uncle, so I would go with my friends and take a head pan and cement to plaster the court. It was a community thing and we rebuilt the court. I think that made me quite popular in school and when I contested for Director of Sports, I won. I contested against Psquare at the time; I became Mr. Campus and Mr. Popular. 

I had responsibilities and people genuinely looked up to me. You could hear people constantly debating my identity. I remember when my dad was the military governor of Kano State, late General Sani Abacha had asked my twin sister and I to come and see him in the State House, so we flew with late Alhaji Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo to see General Abacha. When we got there he said that he wanted to meet the kids that people were talking about, and I didn’t get it. At that time you could tell that military governors’ kids were wayward, they were always here and there, so when the country had to deal with the issues of governors they were also dealing with the issues of governors’ children in schools. So he wanted to meet us because he was impressed with us and wanted to know why we were like that. It was the first time I met him and that gave me a different opinion about him. It gave me the feeling that people were following me and that was when I started my own entertainment outfit in school called the Luciano Family Entertainment. We had members like The Natives. The Natives used to have members like H.I and AJ. H.I, brother to Tuface Idibia and AJ is still in the industry. We also had Psquare and mentors like Six Foot Plus, Mode 9, Terry Tha Rapman; it was cool. If I had known that entertainment was going to be a business with a boom, who knows maybe I would have taken it out of school and further.

Since you have resumed office, what would you say is the percentage of the positive impact your own tenure has brought, and are you the first SSA on Lagos affairs? 

Yes, I am the first SSA and the only SSA that does not sit in Kano. Maybe that is why the perception of me being a politician always comes up. If I was sitting in Kano I would be around political things. To be honest with you, I can’t categorically give credit to my office because when I find investors, I direct them to the next SSA, whether sports, agriculture, and many others and vouch for them. The truth is that they can always find their footings in Kano themselves, but the thing is that if you want to go to a place you have never been before you need to find someone that knows what it is all about and that is where I come in. 

For example, Lagos had only one underpass until recently, the tunnel at Maryland. There is another one now at Guinness towards Agege. In Kano, we have over 10 underpasses. So what we have done in Kano is that we’ve connected the bridges and linked roads. It is the next bridge network you will see in Nigeria. We can also boast of our own equivalent of LASTMA, called Karota. We have our neighbourhood watch, which we learnt from Lagos. We hope that before the end of this administration, we have our own BRT system in place. In Kano, a system like that is complex because if it happens, we must have a 24-hour service. In Lagos, commercial activities run from morning till night. In Kano, commercial activities run from morning till night and resume at night till morning. We are still coming up with how to manage those logistics. Recently, I was talking to some people about how we can host the first Kano City Marathon. 

You are a Delta-born ambassador from Kano State to Lagos State, which is three different states in three different geo-political zones, three very different languages and cultures. Would you call yourself a true Nigerian? 

I would say that I have had the best of all worlds and I’ll tell you why. I went to the Nigerian Military School and joined the Nigerian Army at a very young age. As a soldier, I understand what it is to serve. Now, I have been a soldier, I am a civilian, I grew up in the north, I am Urhobo by tribe from Delta State, I was born in Lagos, so I am a fan of ‘Nigeria can work’; that is my perception. People say, ‘Warri no dey carry last’. It is only someone who has never left Warri that would say something like that. By the time you come to a place like Lagos, you will see the competitiveness of things and realise you are nowhere near first. I say I have had the best of all the worlds: I grew up in a Muslim society with the Arewa culture. I live in a Yoruba community and I am also a chief in my village in Delta State. 

Looking forward, what are your plans politically, do you have the plans to fully go into politics fully? 

I think where I am from our people, our fathers, elders, unlike the north are not preparing their children for the future of politics. In the north, they start preparing the young ones to take over. I am from Delta State and I work for an APC governor, yet I am from a PDP state. My father is a grassroots leader in a PDP state, and I know they would not encourage young people to take up some of these roles, because our fathers still want to be there. I don’t see myself wanting to be part of a system where I am not welcome to change things. I am the first of my kind SSA, which means once I am done with this assignment, another governor can pick me up and ask me to represent them. People that understand investment and commerce know that Lagos is the centre. So with my background, I could be that ambassador for states. That would likely be my participation in politics, so I have no plans to contest for any office, not in the nearest future.

At primary schools also constructed primary school at Malamawa and also provided furniture in all these schools classroom.

All these projects have been completed and commissioned. He also built blocks of classrooms in 23 out of 30 wards in the constituents which will be commissioned soon. Annually, he purchased final year examination forms of the National Examination Council, West African Examination Council and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination forms to hundreds of students in the three local government.

However, in youth development, honourable Abdullahi has secured hundreds of youth jobs, including Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, Civil Defence, CBN, PHCN and other places at the state and federal level. For those with no formal education, honourable has provided soft skills training, cold rooms, machines for irrigation farming, and agricultural support to thousands of youth in the constituent to fight unemployment.

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday granted pardon to 123 prison inmates in the state.

Ganduje, who witnessed the release of the inmates from Goron Dutse Prison, said the gesture was in the spirit of the Eid-El Fitr celebration.

He said the inmates were selected based on the gravity of the offences and signs of reformation while in prison.

The governor said the decision to visit the prison was to show the inmates that the state government was aware of their existence and still regarded them as citizens of the state.

He stressed that the gesture was to complement the Federal Government’s efforts on the decongestion of the nation’s prisons.

The governor advised the ex-inmates to change their attitudes to life and pray for peace and stability in Nigeria.

He also gave each of the freed inmates N5,000 as transport fare to their various destinations.

Earlier, the Comptroller ‎of Prisons in the state, Suleiman Suleiman, thanked the governor for freeing thousands of inmates since he assumed office in 2015.

Suleiman advised the freed inmates to stay off crime to avoid going back to prison.

Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has expressed concerns over the level of corruption in Nigeria, which according to him, would not allow the country to progress.

The Governor said this during his speech at the inauguration of an eight-man Anti-Corruption Strategy Steering Committee on Thursday.

Ganduje, who was represented by SSG Alhaji Usman Alhaji at the event, noted the state government had accorded all necessary support to PCACC in the fight against graft.

“Believe me, we don’t need to say that corruption in this country is killing all of us. The truth of the matter is that we will never develop or progress with this level of corruption in this country,” he said.

“I want to say that this committee is one of the most important committees we will inaugurate. My reason is that this organisation has a dual role and responsibility.

“Its first role is of course public complaints. That means, people with some complaints could lodge it at the commission, get it sorted out and resolved amicably. This is not what you can call a crime

“On the other hand, anti-corruption is of course a fight against crime, which means, the double role should not be misconstrued or lost, that is the fight against a crime.

“So, I urge the committee to bring out the strategies whereby the people of Kano State would have the benefit of hope to complain when the need arises, and get amicable settlement.

“Whether it is against the government or government officials, the complaints could be looked into and sorted out.”

Men of the Islamic police outfit, Hisbah in Kano state have invaded some off-campus hostels of the Bayero University in Kano, arresting students of the opposite sex found in the same room.

We gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday night at Danbare, a small community directly opposite the university’s gate.

It was learnt that the men broke into the students’ rooms and dragged them to their office, sparking tension in the neighbourhood as other students kept vigil all through the night out of fear of the unknown.

Despite condemnation from Nigerians, Hisbah group has continued its push for Islamic agenda in the North.

The agency established to enforce Sharia law in some states in the region recently banned stylish haircuts, sagging of trousers, playing of music at social events by disk jockeys and tricycle riders from adorning their vehicles with pictures considered to be obscene and against the tenents of Islam.

A Kano bride who faked her kidnap because she didn’t want her wedding to hold, has explained why she made the decision.

It was reported earlier that Amina Gwani Danzarga was kidnapped 48 hours to her wedding, while on her way back from Dorayi quarters where she went to drop her exams card.

Recounting how the incident occurred, her uncle said;

“Hours after she was declared missing, we received two different text messages, the first one was a threat not to call the girl’s number again and the second one was sent to her younger brother requesting to put her in their prayers as the other lady who was allegedly kidnapped together had been killed.

“We have not received any message again as her number is not going through. We are only praying to Allah Almighty to reveal anyone that has a hand in this kidnapping.”

However the police busted the staged act days after. Kano police spokesperson, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa revealed that the lady went into hiding because she did not want the wedding to hold.

Amina confessed to this in an interview and also revealed that she took the decision because she did not want the wedding to hold.

She said;

“I don’t love the guy, that is why I took that decision… Although I was the one that showed him to my parents.”

The Kano lady further disclosed that she respects her parents very much, which was why she couldn’t inform them of her sudden change of mind about her suitor.

Amina who blamed the act on the devil and also apologized to her parents and her husband-to-be, added that she now loves her husband-to-be more than before and is ready to live with him peacefully for the rest of her life.

Kano Lady Develops Android App For Reporting Rape Cases

A Kano-born young lady, Saadat Aliyu has developed an android application ‘Helpio App’ for reporting cases of sexual abuse.

‘Helpio App’ was launched on August 6, 2020, on Playstore.

Ms Aliyu who is the founder of Shamrock Innovations, Women and Youth-Centric Tech Innovation Hub in Kano, said that any person can visit Playstore on an android phone and install the app.

“You can go to the Play store, search for it and install it. After Installation, you can sign up using email and password either in Hausa or English language,” she told Channels Television on Monday.

“So far the Initiative for Support of Victims of Sexual abuse, Orphans and Less privileged (ISSOL) and Equity Destitute, Child Right and Welfare initiative (EDCRAWI) have signed up in the platform.”

She recalled that she started learning IT skills from her brother when she was in junior secondary school and subsequently became a self-taught developer.

The young lady said her next project will be launched very soon and is fintech-oriented conceived to continue making an impact on women and people’s lives by advocating and developing solutions.

We will rather lose our goods – Northern traders insist on continuing food blockade to the South

Northern traders under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) have vowed to continue the food blockade to the Southern part of the country, in spite of being at risk of losing their perishable goods.

Awwalu Aliyu, an official of the union who spoke to TheCable stated that the aim of the food blockade is not to starve Southerners but to protest against the killing and destruction of properties belonging to Northerners.

Aliyu who restated the group’s claim of Northerners being killed and losing properties especially during the #EndSARS protest and the recent Shasha market crisis in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, added that it will be better for them to lose food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state than losing their lives.

When asked if members of the union were not concerned about food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state, going bad and leading to losses, Aliyu said;

“It would be better to lose the food items than to lose lives.

“You’re talking about losing goods; which one is better, to lose a life or to lose property? Losing property is better than losing a life.

“We prefer and our people will prefer to lose those farm items or goods than to continue losing their lives. If you are alive, you can plant another thing, you can rear another cattle. But if you’re dead, you can’t do that again. Only the living can go to the farm.

“We do not want to destroy anybody. We do not want to kill anybody. The number of Yorubas and Ibos that reside in Kano and Kaduna alone is far more than the number of northerners in the entire south-west, south-south and south-east.

“Also, the investments of Yorubas and Igbos in Kano and Kaduna, running into billions of naira is more than the entire investments of northerners in the south-west, south-east and south-south if you remove Dangote. Our people are only petty traders, shoe shiners, fingernail cutters, wheelbarrow pushers, okada riders and so on.

“Our people in the south don’t have what southerners have in the north. They have farmlands, buildings and a lot of properties that run into billions. We do not intend to touch a needle out of it. We do not intend to destroy anybody’s property. What we want is to have our people protected from being killed.”

KANO STATE HISBAH ARREST TWO MEN FOR SENDING PORN VIDEOS TO MARRIED WOMAN

The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested two men suspected of sending pornographic materials to a married woman.

A statement released by Lawan Ibrahim, the spokesperson of the board, said that the suspects were traced and arrested after the woman had complained to the board. Lawan said the married woman had informed the board’s officials that she did not know those sending the messages to her phone.

“The board collected the phone numbers from her, which led to the two men’s arrest at Unguwa Uku in Tarauni Local Government Area. The young men are between the age of 20 and 21.

We have summoned their parents to speak with them and for them to pay keen attention to their wards’ way of life to avoid such behaviour in future,” the statement read in part

Lawan advised parents to avoid buying expensive phones for their children and always monitor their movements to shield them from mingling with bad friends.

We Don’t Carry AK-47 Like Herdsmen, Benue Farmers Refute Lalong’s Accusation

The association of farmers in Nigeria says they are shocked by the comments recently made by Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong who said both herders and farmers carry AK-47.

The Benue State chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesdays said they the governor is wrong and that they do not carry AK-47 like herdsmen.

Governor Lalong had earlier on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television Breakfast programme Sunrise Daily lamented over the rise in arms proliferation in the country noting that both herders and farmers now carry AK-47 in self-defence.

“We watched with shock, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong on Channels Television where he accused farmers of carrying AK-47 riffles like Fulani herdsmen.

“All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Benue State Chapter finds Governor Lalong’s accusation grossly unacceptable, and we hereby reject it in its entirety.

“We consider the Plateau State Governor’s utterances as an insult to farmers of Benue State in particular and Nigerian farmers in general whose efforts in feeding the nation are being frustrated by atrocities of armed herdsmen,” the farmers’ association said in reaction to Lalong.

The farmers stressed that they are law-abiding citizens and do not take the law into their hands.

“Benue farmers are peaceful and law-abiding. We do not take the law into our hands despite the many unprovoked attacks on our members who are killed in their hundreds and their only source of livelihood destroyed by armed herdsmen.”

The farmers in the statement which was jointly signed by its State Chairman, Aondongu Saaku, and PRO Anthony Onu Ogbole commended the efforts of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom in the enactment of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law and numerous other measures he is taking to guarantee peace and security in the state.

‘They Are Peaceful People’: Sheikh Gumi Makes Case For Fulani-Herdsmen-Turned-Bandits

Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has reiterated that Fulani herdsmen involved in banditry are victims of circumstance.

Sheikh Gumi restated his position during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

The cleric has previously advocated for the bandits to be granted amnesty after meeting them in the bush.

“When I listened to them, I found out that it is a simple case of criminality which turned into banditry, which turned into ethnic war, and some genocide too behind the scene; people don’t know,” Sheikh Gumi said.

The cleric said that while “there is no excuse for any crime; nothing can justify crime, and they are committing crime,” the bandits were forced into criminality.

“I think it is a population that is pushed by circumstances into criminality,” he said. “And this is what we should look, let’s remove the pressure, let’s remove the things that made them into criminals because we have lived thousands of years without any problems with the nomadic herdsmen. They are peaceful people. But something happened that led them to this.”

SENIOR OFFICIAL OF KANO HISBAH SANI RIMO CAUGHT IN HOTEL WITH MARRIED WOMAN

A senior official with Kano Hisbah, Sani Rimo has been arrested after he was allegedly caught with a married woman in a hotel in Kano. He is said to be in charge of arresting beggars and prostitutes in Kano metro area.

He was taken into custody after the husband of the woman with whom he allegedly had the affair with filed complaints.

The Kano State Hisbah Corps is a religious police force in Nigeria’s Kano state responsible for the enforcement of Sharia.

Hisbah officers regularly arrest unmarried people caught in hotels and people breaking Sharia laws. They also punish those who are indecently dressed, have haircuts considered immoral in Islam, and they are known to destroy crates of alcohol.

It therefore came as a surprise when it was announced on radio that a senior official of Hisbah was seen in a hotel with a married woman.

Freedom Radio Kano reported that the official was arrested in Sabon Gari area of the city.

The arrested commander is said to be in charge of arresting beggars and prostitutes in Kano metro area. He was taken into custody after the husband of the woman with whom he allegedly had affairs filed complaints.

Kano Hisbah Commander Muhammed Haruna, while describing the incident as unfortunate, said a two-man committee has been established to investigate the matter, Freedom Radio said.

Presidency Should Be Zoned To Southern Nigeria, Says Ganduje

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, says a presidential slot should be given to the southern region.

Ganduje stated this in Kano during an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today which aired on Friday.

“The Southern part of the country but there should be a consensus of the members,” he said in reaction to which zone should produce the 2023 presidency.

“Zoning system even though it is not in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is a strategy for winning elections.”

When asked if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has done well for Nigerians since sweeping to power in 2015, the governor replied in the affirmative.

He said the APC under President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership improved on Nigeria’s security situation as well as fixing the nation’s economy.

Ganduje is therefore confident that the ruling party would win the 2023 general election and maintain its winning streak by holding to power at the federal level.

“I think in 2023, APC will win the election because more people are coming into the party. Though we lost some governors because of intraparty problems, at the same time some are coming into the party.

“Also there is a very strong movement now to reconcile the major actors and I think that is also making the party stronger,” he added.

The governor said he is hopeful that despite the wranglings within the APC, the party would resolve all differences and put its house in order before 2023.

He however advised the party’s leadership to do a lot of planning and research to adopt the best option and approach in winning subsequent polls in the country.

BARBER ARRESTED FOR BLASPHEMOUS HAIRCUTS AGAINST ISLAM TELLS HIS SIDE OF THE STORY, SHOWS PHOTOS OF CUTS

The young Benue barber, Elijah Ode, who is standing trial in Kano State after being accused of blasphemy was initially arrested by the police on January 15, 2021 and later released, new details reveal.

Ode, who is also a student, was rearrested from his shop in the Sabon Gari area of the state on Wednesday, January 27, for giving his customers haircuts deemed blasphemous to the Islamic religion.

He was arraigned in court on Tuesday, February 2, and thereafter remanded in prison.

The young man had shared details of his arrest via his Twitter handle @ode_elijah on January 26, along with photos of the alleged offending haircuts.

According to the tweets, he was arrested alongside two of his customers by police operatives from the Matro Division of the State Police Command on Friday, January 15, for giving the clients hair designs which they claimed have some similarities with some Islamic inscription.

“Reasons for the arrest goes thus: According to the police officers that showed up in my shop that day, in response to the allegation made against me by some members of the Islamic group in Kano, they said that they received a report that I gave two of my clients a haircut style with a design of an image which was said to have some similarities with something in Islamic religious group.

“However, they eventually arrested me, took some of my barbing tools. They also arrested the two of my clients who had the hairstyle on their heads. We were being detained till in the evening on Friday, 15th till Saturday night, 16th.

“We were being charged approximately N27,000 plus for the alleged offence. My shop was shut down for 4 days and it took 4 days as well for me to be able to get my tools back. Attached is the haircut design which they allegedly claimed is an Islamic inscription.”

HOUSEWIFE POURS HOT WATER ON CO-WIFE & DAUGHTER AFTER ALTERCATION

A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Kano, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of a 30-year-old housewife, Hauwa Auwal, in a correctional centre. She allegedly poured hot water on her co-wife and daughter.

Auwal, a resident of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano, faces one-count charge of attempt to commit culpable homicide.

The Prosecutor, Amina Yahaya, told the court that the husband, Babangida Ibrahim reported the case at Sheka Police Division Kano on January 22.

At about 8:21p.m. on that day, Auwal, the second wife, had a misunderstanding with the first wife, Sha’awa Isma’il. In the process, Auwal poured a full bucket of hot water on Sha’awa and her four-year-old daughter, Halima Khalil, according to Yahaya. The victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, and are currently receiving treatment.

Auwal pleaded not guilty to the charge. The prosecutor opposed the bail application made by her lawyer. The counsel, Hassan Umar, made an oral bail application citing Sections 172 and 175 of Kano State Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

“The defendant is pregnant and could give birth any moment. If granted bail she will not jump bail,” he said.

Senior Magistrate Talatu Makama dismissed the application. Makama said the offence was capital in nature and the court has no jurisdiction to grant her bail. She ordered the remand of the accused in a correctional centre and directed the counsel to seek bail at the State High Court.

The matter was adjourned until March 8.

YOUNG BARBER ARRESTED IN KANO FOR CUTTING HAIRSTYLES DEEMED BLASPHEMOUS TO ISLAM

A young barber from Benue State identified as Elijah Ode has been reportedly arrested in Kano for blasphemy.

According to a Benue activist, Smith Akoko, the young man, who is also a student, was arrested last Wednesday, after two of his customers were caught with hairstyles deemed blasphemous to the Islamic religion.

His cousin, Sunday Ukenya, who confirmed the incident to Akoko, said that Elijah was arraigned in court on Tuesday, February 2 and later remanded.

”Elijah Ode, a resident of Kano from Adum East, Obi LGA of Benue State, who combines barbing with studies and is domicile in the Sabon Gari town of the state was reported to have been in the net of Islamic religious extremists, who believe he has committed blasphemy in the cause of his work as barber.

Report says Elijah, who is well patronized by young people for possessing exceptional skills in trendy haircuts, attracted the wrath of the extremists last week Wednesday when two of his customers were tortured to stupor for designs claimed to be blasphemous to the Islamic religion.

Thereupon, Elijah was traced to his barbershop, where he was arrested for complicity, and has been in Police detention with the two customers since last week.

According to information obtained from his cousin, Mr Sunday Ukenya, the young barber did not design the hairstyles with the intention to provoke. He said he was only being innovative doing his work as usual to eke a living and pay his fees at his tertiary institution of study in Kano, where he sponsors himself.

Ukenya also added that the case is already in the court of law at the wish of the aggrieved Muslims with first session being yesterday. He expressed sadness, however, that all efforts by the young barber’s lawyer to bail him proved abortive for the claim that it is a major case and is as a result not bailable.

At the moment, the family has run out of hope, soliciting intercessory prayers as the reality of incarceration stares Elijah in the face.

Cattle Movement From North To South Should Be Banned.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State is seeking to have a law enacted which would place a ban on the movement of herdsmen and cattle from the north towards the southern regions of Nigeria.

This he believes will help curb the recurring clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

Speaking to journalists after a special lunch with President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, Governor Ganduje argued that the law will also address the issue of cattle rustling in the northern part of the country.

“My advocacy is that we should abolish the transportation or trekking of herdsmen from the Northern part of Nigeria to the Middle Belt and to the Southern part of Nigeria.

“There should be a law that will ban, otherwise we cannot control the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers and cannot control the cattle rustling which is affecting us greatly,” the governor said.

On the appointment of the Service Chiefs, Governor Ganduje said he wants the military hierarchy to work with state governors to ensure safety across the country.

He said the call became necessary because the governors know the security needs of the people and the various black spots in their states and as such, they are very valuable in the bid to secure the nation.

NORTHERN GOVERNORS TO TAKE SHOTS OF COVID-19 VACCINE

Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Plateau state, Simon Lalong has announced that the 19 Northern States Governors will be publicly taking the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine when they arrive in the country.

Lalong said this in his address at a webinar organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, where the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine were discussed.

The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government Prof. Danladi Atu, said the Northern Governors will be publicly taking the vaccine to dispel fears surrounding it.

He said;

“We – the Northern Governors – have agreed to take the first doses of the vaccines.”

Court stops Ganduje from deducting judiciary workers’ salaries

A High Court in Kano on Thursday stopped Governor Abdullahi Ganduje from further deductions of the salaries of judiciary workers in the state.

Justice Usman Na’abba gave the order following an exparte motion filed before the court by the workers under the aegis of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Kano State chapter.

The plaintiffs in the suit through its counsel, F. I. Umar, joined the Kano State governor, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Finance, Head of Service and Accountant General as defendants.

They urged the court to restrain the defendants from further deductions of their salaries.

Justice Na’abba, in an interim order, granted the plaintiffs prayers by restraining the defendants from further actions pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The judge further directed the defendants or their agents to comply with the agreement dated December 19, 2019, entered into between Kano State Government and Joint Public Service Negotiating Council by paying JUSUN members their full salaries under Consolidated Judicial Staff Salary Structure.

He then adjourned the case till January 28, 2021.

KANO STATE POLICE ARREST ARMOURER OF NOTORIOUS KIDNAP SYNDICATE

The Kano State Police Command have arrested the suspected armourer of the kidnap syndicate that abducted a German national and killed his police escort 32 months ago.

Recall that gunmen on Monday, April 16, 2018, killed a police sergeant, Rabilu Haruna and abducted the 59-year-old German engineer with Dantata & Sawoe, Mr Krese Frank Michael along Sabon Titi, Madobi Road, Kano.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the latest development in a statemnet on Thursday, December 24, said that the suspect, Abubakar Ismail, 30, led detectives to their armoury where one AK47 rifle, a single barrel gun, and a revolver were recovered.

“The Suspect led the combine operatives to their Armoury at their Village where one (1) AK-47 Rifle, one (1) Single Barrel Gun and a Revolver Gun were recovered. The suspect confessed to the crime and confessed that the syndicate has been terrorizing Rimin Gado, Gwarzo, Karaye, Kiru, Rano, Bebeji Tudun Wada and other neighboring States, including Kaduna and Katsina for over five (5) years

“He named other members of the syndicate who perpetuated the heinous act. Discrete investigation is in progress to arrest the other members of the syndicate.”

Kwankwanso Talking Tough Says, 2023 will be do-or-die, we won’t accept ‘inconclusive’ election.

A former governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will not allow the repetition of “inconclusive” during the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared the result of the 2019 governorship election in Kano as inconclusive, following the razor-gap difference between the PDP candidate, Abba Yusuf, and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

At first, Mr Yusuf was leading with 26,655 votes but after the rerun, Mr Ganduje emerged victorious with the margin of 8,982 votes.

But, while addressing a mammoth crowd of supporters in a viral video believed to be recorded in Kano on Thursday, the leader Kwankwasiyya Movement said the party would no longer tolerate such “election rigging”.

In the 1:28 minute footage, Mr Kwankwaso accused Governor Ganduje of conniving with INEC and security agents to rig the election, warning that, “such a mess will never be repeated against us again”.

He said: “They are now intoxicated with power. He (Ganduje) thinks that he will never leave that power, not knowing that 2023 is just two years away.

“2023 bears with a different colour. You all hear what politicians say, ‘do or die’, so 2023 will be do-or-die politics. We will not condone inconclusive again.”

“I hope, our women supporters would spare their pestle, club and spoon to protect their votes come 2023.

“I warn APC and INEC to allow for proper electoral process or regret their actions,” Mr Kwankwaso warned.

Aisha Yesufu, a leader of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, has condemned Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, for expressing readiness to sign the death warrant of a musician, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu over alleged blasphemy.

Speaking at a gathering of religious leaders, legal practitioners, security personnel and government officials on Thursday, Ganduje had said he won’t waste time in signing the warrant for the execution of Sharif-Aminu if he does not appeal the Sharia Court ruling that sentenced him to death by hanging on August 10.

Yesufu in a tweet on Friday said that the governor should also be sentenced to death for allegedly collecting bribe.

She said, “Ganduje was caught on camera allegedly collecting bribe. In sharia law, any gift to public servant belongs to the state talkless of one caught collecting bribe.

“There is no immunity in sharia law. Ganduje should be the one sentenced to death not signing death warrant.”

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, said on Thursday that he would not waste time to sign the death warrant on a Kano-based singer, Yahaya Sharif, who was sentenced to death by an Upper Shariah Court for blasphemy.

Ganduje made the remark at a stakeholders meeting on the issue at the Government House, Kano.

He said, “Kano State Government has accepted the judgement passed by the Sharia Court and it has also accepted the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Ganduje noted that the convict had a 30-day grace to appeal the judgement, adding that if by the end of the 30 days the convict had not appealed, he would not waste time to sign the execution order.

“In the event the convict appeals the judgement, we shall wait and follow the case up to the Appeal Court. If he further appeals to the Supreme Court, we shall follow the case there. If the Supreme Court upholds the two lower court judgements, the governor of Kano State will not add one minute to sign the execution order,” he said.

Ganduje lamented that the issue of blasphemy was taking its toll in recent times, stressing that the government would not rest on its ores until it contain the situation.

He commended the ulamas for their commitment to ensure the culprit was punished accordingly.

He also commended security agencies for being up and doing to avert possible breach of the peace or break down of law and order during the height of the issue.

In their separate remarks, the Islamic clerics said they were 100 per cent in support of the governor to sign the death warrant as it is the only way forward for any abuse against the prophet.

An Upper Shari’a Court sitting in Kano on Wednesday sentenced a 60-year-old man, Mati Abdu, to death by stoning after his conviction for raping a 12-year-old girl.

Abdu was convicted on a count charge of rape contrary to Section 126 of Kano State Shari’a Penal Code 2000.

The Trial Judge, Ibrahim Sarki-Yola, said the accused person pleaded guilty to charge after the case was adjourned for the fourth time without changing his plea.

Sarki-Yola said the Court was convinced by the accused person’s admission of the charge against him and found him guilty.

The Judge, thereafter, convicted the accused and sentenced him to death by stoning under Section 127 (b) of the Kano State Shari’a Code 2000.

Sarki-Yola, however, ordered a 30-days grace within which to appeal the judgment.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Ms Badariya Muhammad, had told the court that the convict committed the offence sometimes in 2019, at Farsa village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of the State.

Muhammad told the court that the convict at about 1:00 p.m. had unlawful canal knowledge of the 12-year-old girl under a tree situated at Farsa village in Tsanyawa.

The prosecution argued that the offence contravened Section 126 of Kano State Shari’a Penal Code Law 2000. (NAN)

The embattled leader of Jama’atu Ahlussunnah Lid Da’awati Wal Jihad otherwise known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has released 11 minutes audio in which he faulted the death sentencing of a man accused of blasphemy in Kano State.

Yahaya Sherif Aminu was sentenced to death by hanging in Kano State for insulting Prophet Muhammad in a song he shared on WhatsApp in March.

“We heard about something sad happening in the state where people think they are Muslims, even though they are practicing disbelief,” Shekau stated.

“A singer opened his mouth and uttered unkind words against the Prophet (PBUH). It was said he was arrested and sentenced to death by hanging.

“According to some people, he can appeal the judgement. But what brought this if the sentence is godly?”

Shekau was saying this because an upper Shari’a court judge who sentenced the singer, Alkali Aliyu Muhammad Kani, said the accused could appeal the verdict within 30 days even though he did not deny the charges.

Shekau claimed that everyone knows that all schools of Islamic jurisprudence opine that whoever insults the Prophet should not be asked to repent.

“He should just be killed. If you really sentenced him, we should only hear that you slaughtered him,” he said.

Shekau added that Kano is not an Islamic State, calling it a land of infidels where democracy is practiced.

“You are not in an Islamic State. You are in the land of infidels. The only exception among you is a weak person who holds ‘Tawhid’ (monotheism). He can’t be declared as an infidel, but he is a sinner because he didn’t migrate.”

The western lifestyle of Kano people itself, according to Abubakar Shekau, is an insult to the Prophet Muhammad.

“Before he insulted the Prophet (PBUH), your lifestyle is an insult itself. Your lifestyle is also blasphemy against the Prophet. How can you say you love someone and you slap him?”

In the audio, Shekau blasted the Kano State for practicing democracy. He said the state allows everyone to do what they like.

Referring to the people of Kano, Shekau said “just because you sit down and recite Quran after you have already done what made you unbelievers? And because you say there is no god but Allah, you think you are Muslims? We tell you, you and the one who insulted the Prophet are all the same.”

This is not the first time a death sentence was passed in Kano State. Abdulaziz Inyass who belong to the extremists in the Tijaniyya Sufi Order is still in detention after he was sentenced to death for blasphemy in 2016.

Abdulaziz was accused of saying that Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass, an influential cleric in West Africa, was ‘bigger than Prophet Muhammad.’

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state inaugurated Implementation Committee for the Report on the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Missing Kano Children, with Justice Wada Abubakar Umar Rano, who headed the then Commission of Inquiry, as the Chairman.

At Ante Chamber, Government House, Kano, Saturday, governor Ganduje said, “After we received the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, we understood that the recommendations as important as they are should best be implemented by those who made the suggestions.”

“There are no better persons to implement these recommendations than you, who made the recommendations. There is difference between your former Commission of Inquiry and this Implementation Committee. Your first Committee was time bound. And this one is without any limited time,” he stated.

He further explained that, “Crime being a continuous process, your work should also be a continuous process. Because we want be rest assured that this report will not be dumped, is part of the major reasons why we are revolving you for this assignment.”

It could be recalled that, the Judicial Commission of Inquiry was inaugurated on 31st October, 2019, which was granted 4 weeks to critically look into the disturbing scenario of missing persons in the state, with a view to unravelling the circumstances that led to the perpetration of that crime. Where children were abducted and taken to far away other states.

The then Commission of Inquiry was given the mandate of looking into such cases of missing persons from the year 2010 to 2019. When Kano 9 children were found in far away Anambra state. Justice Wada Umar Rano was mandated to Chair the Commission.

The Implementation Committee membership was drawn from both public and private organisations and civil society groups.

The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed sixteen persons killed and property worth N40.6 million destroyed in various fire incidents in the past month in the state.

The service, however, said it saved 71 lives and property worth N120 million in 51 fire incidents recorded in June in the state.

Alhaji Saidu Muhammed, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Service, made the disclosure in a statement on Saturday in Kano, NAN reports.

Muhammed attributed the fire incidents to a road accident; use of inferior electrical appliances as well as the poor application of boiling rings, electrical appliances and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

He said the Service also received 50 rescue calls and nine false alarms from the residents within the period under review.

Mohammed, however, advised the residents of the state to exercise caution while handling electrical appliances to avoid fire incidents and urged parents to monitor their wards to discourage swimming in ponds and exposing themselves to hazards.

The Nigerian police in Kano say they have arrested a serial rapist who have raped 40 women in one town over the period of one year.

A mother in the northern town Dangora caught the man in her children’s bedroom, according to police spokesman Abdullahi Haruna. The man ran away but neighbours gave chase and caught him, he added.

The man was arrested on Tuesday.

The police say the spate of rapes included an attack on an 80-year-old and children as young as 10 years old.

There has been a recent wave of rapes and killing of women in Nigeria, which have led to a national outcry, with thousands signing a petition and using the hashtag #WeAreTired.

Dangora is a small town in Kano state about 85 kilometres (55 miles) south-west of Kano city, making it difficult for police to access, reports the BBC’s Mansur Abubakar from Kano.

The chief of the town, Ahmadu Yau, said the arrest is a welcome development.

“People of Dangora are so happy at this time and we hope justice will be served appropriately.”

Residents told the BBC that they had lived the last year in fear, even in their own homes, because they had heard that a serial rapist was climbing fences and raping women indoors.

“We can now sleep with our eyes closed,” one woman told the BBC.

The results of a survey published by NOIPolls in July 2019 suggested that up to one in every three girls living in Nigeria could have experienced at least one form of sexual assault by the time they reach 25.

It is not uncommon for rape to go unreported – with some victims and their families, fearing stigmatisation, police extortion and a lack of trust in the judicial process, choose not to report cases to the authorities.

Justice Jane Inyang of the Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has sentenced Yinusa Dalhiru to 26 years imprisonment for abducting then 14-year-old teenage girl, Ese Oruru, from her home in Bayelsa state to Kano state where he got married to her and impregnated her.

Ese made news in 2015 after the story of her abduction by Yinusa was widely reported. Yinusa had met the 14 -year-old Ese at her mother’s shop where he and his peers go to buy food. He abducted and took her to Kano on August 12th, 2015 where he forcefully married her and had her name changed to Aisha after she was converted to a Muslim.

After months of outcry from her parents and Human rights activists, she was returned to Bayelsa in March 2016, pregnant with a child. She was delivered of her baby girl on May 26th, 2016. Ese in an interview said she did not know how she followed him to Kano. Yinusa was arrested and arraigned in court on charges bordering on child trafficking, child abuse, rape, kidnap, infringement of right of religion, and holding a person against their will. After four years of litigation, Justice Inyang on Thursday morning May 21, convicted him and sentenced him to 26 years in prison.

The Federal Government on Monday said hospitals were rejecting sick patients in Kano State.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 announced this in an update on the state’s battle against coronavirus.

Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and PTF Chairman spoke at the daily briefing in Abuja.

He disclosed that the team received reports that medical facilities and doctors were turning back sick patients over the fear that their illnesses were COVID-19-related.

Mustapha begged hospitals not to neglect the treatment of other ailments because such actions had resulted in avoidable deaths.

He noted that teams dispatched from Abuja had continued to work with the state structure and were doing well.

“We have achieved a lot in the area of manpower support, equipment deployment and usage, increased testing capacity and treatment centres.

“Efforts are also ongoing to upscale the training of medical personnel in Kano and neighbouring states on the management of infectious diseases and to provide them with Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for protection.

“Private hospitals have also been advised to seek accreditation before taking up the management of infectious diseases,” Mustapha said.

The SGF disclosed that federal and Kano governments were strengthening existing structures, especially for sustainability.

Leader of Kano Presidential Task Force Committee on Covid-19, Dr Nasiru Sani Gwarzo has on Sunday said coronavirus pandemic is responsible and the cause of the waves of mysterious deaths recorded in the Kano State.

Gwarzo said the recent deaths and from the test, it carried out it has been established that covid-19 is the cause.

He disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in the state on Sunday after the ceremony of donation of mobile testing laboratory facilities by Alhaji Aliko Dangote to the Kano State Government.

According to Gwarzo, “Let me inform us that, most of the deaths recorded of recent and test carried out showed that coronavirus is the cause. So before the final reports which would be ready in the next one week or few days, it is necessary for people of Kano to wake up from their slumber that this is a serious issue.

“It is not a new thing, countries like America, China, Italy, Spain, England, France and others experienced similar mysterious deaths,” Gwarzo stated.

Recall that Dr. Nasiru Sani Gwarzo on matching order of President Muhammadu Buhari led the technical team of the Presidential Task Force to unravel the cause of mysterious deaths in Kano and also to contain the spread of the virus in the state.

Earlier while presenting the mobile testing centre to the state government, the representative of the ‘Aliko Dangote Foundation’, Zouerra Yousufu said that the donation was to compliment the effort of the government in the fight against the pandemic in the state.

According to her, the centre has the capacity of testing 400 samples in a day, adding that 10 ambulances and six other vehicles were also donated to the state to ease movement.

“This centre with 400 testing capacity, we are planning by next week to commence testing of about 1,000 samples, and every logistic issue related to the laboratory, Dangote foundation will handle it.

“The laboratory which was conceived by a Nigerien and in Nigeria is aimed at speeding the testing of COVID-19 samples in the state.

“Looking at the population of Kano, more mobile laboratories are coming, and we assured you that the foundation will continue to support the fight against the pandemic in the stare and Nigeria in general.”

Responding, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje commended the foundation for the kind gesture, saying that it came at a time the state is in trouble over the issue of COVID-19, especially the testing centre.

According to Ganduje, “so far we have three testing centres in the state, that of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Bayero University and now the one donated by Dangote.

“With these centres, our work in fighting the pandemic will be easier.

“I have to commend the effort of President Muhammad Buhari for ensuring the reactivation of the NCDC centre after it was shut down a week back.

“With the three centres, the prevalence of the disease will be controlled,” Ganduje said while also commending the people of Kano for gradually believing the truth of the disease.

Also Speaking, the NCDC Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu commended the state government effort in fighting the pandemic in the state.

He assured to continue to work with the government towards controlling the spread of the disease in Kano and the country in general.

Kwankwasiyya Foundation has disclosed that Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has rejected the former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s donation of a newly-built 60-bed capacity hospital as isolation center for Coronavirus patients in the state.

Recall that on Monday, April 20, the former governor had announced the donation in terse statement signed by Ibrahim Adam, spokesman to Abba Kabiru Yusuf, the Kano State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in the 2019 elections.

According to the statement, the hospital, named Amana Hospital and located at Miller Road, Bompai in the Kano City, had been equipped by Mr Kwankwaso, a former Senate who represented Kano Central during the 8th Assembly.

On Friday, a few weeks thereafter, Kwankwasiyya Movement took to twitter to disclose that Mr Ganduje had yet to acknowledge the gesture nor put the same to a use.

Writing on Twitter, the movement alleged that Mr Ganduje was playing politics with the lives of Kano people by refusing to take the donation.

“Millions of lives are at stake but Ganduje is playing politics with the donation of the hospital by Kwankwasiyya Foundation.

“Gov. Ganduje refused to take a donation of a hospital as an isolation center from Kwankwaso in order to save lives in Kano because of a mere political grudge,” the foundation wrote.

Reacting to the development, Twitter users expressed mixed reactions with one user stating that if what the movement claimed is true, then, Governor Ganduje’s decision is bad.

He said: “If that’s true, then it’s too bad. I thought they have settled their differences considering the esteemed regards people have for them.”

Another user rose in defense of Governor Ganduje, saying that the Kwankwasiyya Movement was a hypocrite for playing politics with everything.

According to him, Kano does not lack isolation centre, adding that the state needs testing laboratories at the moment.

He said: “[Kwankwasiyya Movement are] original hypocrites, playing politics in everything thing.

“You know Kano does lack isolation Center for now, it is a lab that Kano needs, we still have unoccupied isolation center by Dangote at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

Chief Ebenezer Babatope, a former Minister of Transport, on Wednesday said the Kano state government must look inwards and see if it has not violated the cultural tradition of the ancienstry through the banishment of the former Emir, Muhammad Sanusi II.

Hundreds of people have died mysteriously in the state in the last one week with about 60 people dying in one day.

The Kano State Government had said the recent deaths in the state were caused by complications arising from hypertension, diabetes, meningitis and acute malaria.
The Sarkin Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, also confirmed that the mass deaths reported in Kano State were not from COVOD-19 as being speculated in some quarters.

Speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Babatope said as Africans who value tradition, the state government must find out if it has not violated traditional custom in the state.

“If they are saying it is not linked to Coronavirus, then they must examine their tradition. They must go and find out if someone is wronged by their tradition. Having banished their Emir, it could be part of their tradition that they shouldn’t do that kind of thing.

“For prominent individuals to be dying like that without being infected with Coronavirus is very mysterious. They need to examine very critically their traditional arrangements. I only hope the banishment of the Emir hasn’t got anything to do with the mysterious deaths.

“I think the governor must sit down with his executives to ensure that they go into the root of this matter and find out if they have not bastardised their tradition. We are Africans and we believe in African tradition.

“If they have bastardised the African tradition by the way they removed the Emir, it is dangerous and they must seek for restitution. The death of so many people in just few days is very baffling and mysterious,” he said.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has accused the Nigerian government of neglecting the state, as it battles the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ganduje stated this in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Monday.

When asked if he was getting supports from federal government agencies on the fight against Coronavirus, the Governor replied: “Sincerely speaking, we are not getting deserved attention.

“If these equipment (testing centre) are under our control, we will do our best to make sure it works properly.

“But we are not getting the needed support and cooperation from Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.”

Nigeria’s Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire, has already assured that the COVID-19 testing centre in Kano will resume operations on Monday.

Kano State is also battling with mysterious deaths, which the state government claimed might be complications arising from acute malaria, hypertension, diabetes and meningitis.

Following the alleged death of six hundred and forty citizens (640) in Kano, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday called for investigation, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to visit the state.

The party in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity Secretary, PDP equally lampooned Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, noting that he abandoned his duty as a governor.

Recall that a good number of people were reportedly died under mysterious circumstances in the last one week.

In view of this therefore, the part noted with dismay that the Buhari Presidency had failed to take any concrete step on this frightening development, but is, as usual, waiting to be prodded to stand up to the demand of the office and proceed to Kano state to identity with the people, find solution and contain the ugly situation.

Read the statement below: “The party describes as lamentable that President Muhammadu Buhari, who promised to lead from the front, and who recently took up the toga of ECOWAS COVID-19 Response Champion, had rather receded into the safety of Aso Villa and failed to promptly activate any concrete and visible action to investigate and arrest the situation in Kano, where Nigerians are dying in their hundreds.

The PDP described the situation as yet another manifestation of leadership failure and insensitivity of the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration to the plight of Nigerians at critical moments.

Our party holds that the situation in Kano demands an immediate Presidential visit and investigation at the very high level. Those dying in Kano are Nigerians and must not be abandoned. The development deserves an utmost Presidential attention to avoid further escalation.

This is particularly imperative as it is evident that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his APC-led administration in Kano State are totally incompetent and have become overwhelmed after failing to take appropriate measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus or whatever medical situation that has taken over the state.

When Ganduje, who is being dogged by allegations of corruption, was expected to ensure compliance to preventive measures, he rather chose to abandon governance and spent executive time pursuing controversial extraneous issues that have no direct benefits on the lives of the people.

It is even more ludicrous that Governor Ganduje chose to politicize the health issues in his state by resorting to unnecessary denials and pecuniary concerns.

Such anti-people approach to governance is always symptomatic of a leadership that did not emanate from the mandate of the people.

Furthermore, it is left for Governor Ganduje to explain why he failed to contain his daughter, Dr. Amina Umar Ganduje, whose reported overbearing attitude in the Kano state COVID-19 task force allegedly contributed to the crippling of the activities of those charged with taking preventive measures.

Our party therefore calls on Nigerians to hold Governor Ganduje and his APC administration responsible for the development in Kano State which had worsened due to the failure of both Kano state and the Federal Government to promptly investigate and contain the situation.

Consequently, the PDP charges President Buhari to immediately wade in and arrest the situation in Kano without any further delay.”

Balarabe Maikaba, a professor of mass communication, at Bayero University in Kano, is dead.

A family source disclosed this to TheCable, saying his burial has been fixed for 4pm on Sunday.

One of the former students of the deceased told TheCable that he was preparing to attend the funeral prayer at the family house of the deceased at Fagge in Kano.

Maikaba is said to be the sixth professor to have died in one week in the state which has recorded harvests of death during the coronavirus pandemic.

TheCable had reported how residents expressed worry over the rising deaths in the state.

There has been panic among Kano residents following an unusual increase in the number of deaths in the state. The toll from the mysterious deaths that have hit Kano State has continued to rise. According to reports, no fewer than 190 people had been buried within four days in Kano and the cause of these deaths are not known. The state imposed a lockdown shortly after recording its first COVID-19 case last week. At the moment, Kano has a total of 73 confirmed Coronavirus cases, according to NCDC. Some people worry that the mysterious deaths in Kano may be linked to the deadly COVID-19. However, some worry it may be something else. Undertakers who double as grave diggers in certain cemeteries in Kano state said the frequency at which they receive corpses these days is unusual when compared to the number of people they buried before the coronavirus outbreak. Areas where an increase in deaths have been reported include; Zage, Kano Municipal, Tarauni, Gwale, Kurna, Dala, Chiromawa, Zango, Kofar Mata, Fagge, Kumbotso, and some local government areas outside the metropolitan like Bichi, Kunchi, Wudil, Gwarzo, and Shanono. Adamu Umar, a cemetery guard at farm centre, said he buried over 17 people on Sunday alone, adding that the situation is scary, as it is unusual since he began working there in the last four years. Bashir Mohammed, one of the undertakers at the Dandolo Cemetery in Goron Dutse, Dala Local Government Area of Kano State, said, “This is worrisome, we are becoming overwhelmed by what we are seeing here these days because to me, the way people are dying is not ordinary.”  Mohammed popularly known as Mai Sana’a, said between Saturday and Sunday, over thirty people were buried in the cemetery in contrast to maximum daily record of ten burials previously. The figure of the dead buried in the three cemeteries excludes other people buried in dozens of burial grounds in the eight local government areas that constitute Kano metropolis, though those working in such cemeteries said they did not notice anything unusual. Also, authorities in Kano, community leaders, families of the deceased and medical officials have given different opinions on the matter with the state ministry of health saying it was investigating the matter.  Tijjani Hussaini, the state’s executive secretary of the primary healthcare board, said they were yet to ascertain the cause of the said deaths, but that the situation had “sent residents panicking.” “The investigation is prompted by reports that more deaths have been recorded in the past seven days. We want to know the number of persons already dead. We also want to investigate how they died,” he said. “It is when we have a good idea; it is when we get the outcome of the findings that we can properly draw conclusions and brief the public.” Mustapha Hikima, the chief medical director of Nassarawa Hospital, said the areas where deaths have been recorded are densely populated which makes the number insignificant. “We don’t have the baseline information, but considering the high population size of Kano, the increase in the deaths is not significant,” he said.  He said the Ministry of Health had conducted a survey between April 13 and 19 to see the pattern of deaths in the state. He added that “after the quick survey, the result had shown that there was no significant increase in the rate of death recorded in the state.” He continued:  “We should also take the time of the occurrence of the deaths into consideration. The time happens occasionally. So it is subjective to judge when a case happens within just three days. To me, this is not a serious problem because it happens sometimes. So I appeal to people to be calm.”  Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has directed thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of strange death. Reacting to the development, Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, who acknowledged the strange deaths, told journalists that government had swung into action to assess the matter. Although Garba disagreed that the sudden rise in the case of death in Kano was related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), he noted that Governor Ganduje had directed the state’s ministry of health to investigate it. The Kano government says it has activated community informants structure of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to report deaths and cause of deaths and has also deployed officers in all cemeteries to count bodies brought in for burial every day. The development has thrown many residents of Kano into fear. Some suspect a possible community transmission of the ravaging COVID-19 within the state capital. A number of Kano residents have taken to Twitter and Instagram to express their fears following the increase in death.

Emotion betrayed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the new emir of Kano, Wednesday, after receiving his letter of appointment alongside his brother, Nasiru Ado Bayero as the Emirs of Kano and Bichi respectively at the Kano Government House Coronation Hall, Kano State.

Bayero has also been elevated as the Chairman, Council of Emirs by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

This followed the dethronement and banishment of Sanusi Muhammadu II as the emir of Kano by the Ganduje-led government.

The Emir, who received letters of engagement from Governor Ganduje, broke down in tears while recalling how his father, the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero preached to them about tolerance, patience and simplicity.

Aminu Ado Bayero, who was visibly excited, said he would maintain the systematic ways his father, the late Ado Bayero handled his kingship.

He said, “Our father has been preaching peace, tolerance, love, harmony and unity, which he said remain the best critical tools for a better society.”

The new Emir assured Governor Ganduje of his full readiness to ensure that his vision in free education, banning of Almajiri system is completely eradicated.

“Today, we are making history in Kano, by God’s grace, we will not let down the people of Kano. We will do all we could to ensure that we give out maximum support to the government,” emir Bayero assured.

Speaking during the event, Governor Ganduje said Kano made history after two brothers were appointed Emirs and together received their letters amid excitement.
“There was no time where I see the peoples of Kano been so happy without conflicts, no disharmony no rancor, it is a celebration galore all along with the Kano citizens jubilating and expressing deep sense of happiness,” he said.

The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said the removal was with immediate effect.

He made this known during the launching of Basic Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) and Distribution of Offer of Appointment to 7,500 volunteer teachers, held at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Tuesday.

Lamenting on the ugly situation of the social misnomer he said “This policy of free and compulsory basic and secondary education goes along with it integration of our Almajiri system into the mainstream policy implementation. Which suggests that, English and Arithmetic must be included in the Almajiri schools curriculum.”

This, according to him would go a long in giving those kids other type of education, “….while they will continue acquiring their study of the Holy Qur’an, they would at the same time learn English and Arithmetic, that will give them an opportunity to continue with their studies to secondary schools and beyond,” he explains.

A total number of 7,500 newly recruited teacher volunteers under the BESDA programme are employed and were given letters of appointment, “…they will be posted to Islamiyyah and Almajiri schools, so that our Almajiri schools would be fully integrated under our new policy of education,” he explains.

Governor warned that henceforth any Almajiri teacher with such pupils under Almajiri school arrangement must accept the new approach put in place by the state government, explaining that, “If you think you cannot accept that then you leave the state!

When beggars are caught, the governor added, it is not only that beggar is caught, but his parents and/or guardians. Such parents or guardians according to the governor would be taken to court for disrespecting our laws.

At the occasion 7,500 offers were distributed to the newly recruited teachers who hold National Certificate of Education (NCE), who came from all the 44 local governments of the state.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, commended the effort of the state government in the education sector, adding that what the state is doing under the new policy is exemplary. He was represented by a Director from the Ministry Mrs Liman.

In his remarks the State Chairman of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Danlami Hayyo reveals that, apart from construction of new classes and renovation of many, they were able to produce 16, 327 3-Seater chairs for the schools.

The programme was attended by many development partners and other federal government agencies. Among the dignitaries who blessed the occasion were the Emirs of Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye. Whiel the Emir of Kano sent representative.

Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi says fathers who send out their children to beg for alms should be arrested.

Sanusi spoke on Thursday at a conference Future Assured Initiative, the non-governmental organisation of Aisha Buhari, the first lady, organised in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA)
The emir said no law provides that a man should marry, have children and abandon them without living up to his responsibility to them.

He said any man who is too poor to take care of his family should go out and beg himself, and not send his children.

“Every day, wives are complaining about their husbands who claim their rights but abandon their responsibilities of marriage, women being divorced with their husbands not taking care of the children and those children ending up on the streets, drugs, political thuggery, violent extremism,” he said.

“No law that talks about consent in marriage, the rights of wives and husbands, domestic violence , rights of women divorced , the responsibilities of husbands under divorce situations, if a child is found on the streets, is the father that is responsible and can the state hold him accountable?

“Do you just marry and have children without any responsibilities? The reason Allah send His Prophets is that there should be justice in this world. Justice in our relationship with our maker and in our relationship with our fellow human beings.

“Justice means that everyone is given his rights. If a man takes the privilege of being the head of the family, he takes the responsibilities of being the provider of the family. You cannot take that privilege and a band the responsibilities.

“Is it a fact that a father has the right to force his daughter into a loveless marriage? that you have the rights to batter you wife? You have the right to have children and push them to the streets to beg? That when you divorce your wife, you ask her and her children to pack and go back to her father’s house and that is the end?

“I can spend 100 years saying that it is wrong and un-Islamic for a man to beat his wife, but it is the Governor and the state house of assembly that should pass the law, it is the courts and the police that will make sure that the woman gets justice. The Scholars and Emirs cannot do that.

“So, the problem is these groups of human beings are those who will stand to answer to Allah if there is no justice.

“The traditional and religious leaders have an obligation to ask for justice, but those with the political powers have an obligation to put in place the processes that will make sure that these justices are complied with.”

The newly launched Operation Shege Ka Fasa got a fresh snub on Friday after Governor Abdulahi Ganduje of Kano State declared that his state had no need for the security outfit.

Ganduje said in Abuja that his administration preferred building a strong synergy between the communities and the security agencies to backing the Operation Shege Ka Fasa.

He spoke 24 hours after the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, distanced himself and the Northern Traditional Rulers from the security outfit which was launched on Wednesday.

It is the brainchild of the Coalition of Northern Groups to serve as a counterpoise to the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun.

Ganduje, speaking to State House correspondents, after leading a large delegation of Kano State eminent personalities on a courtesy visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, said the state government had invested so much in security at various levels that it would be unnecessary to consider any other external arrangement.

He described Kano as the most peaceful state in the country currently and has a conducive environment for the security agencies to perform to their maximum level.

The Kano State governor also said that his administration’s free and compulsory education from basic to secondary levels was already addressing the dual menace of mass out of school children and early girl child marriage.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was not part of the delegation, but Ganduje said talks were on to resolve the disagreement between the Emir and the Kano State Government.

His words: “Kano State, being the most peaceful state in the federation. Very soon, we are going to have a community security summit. That is how the communities are going to assist security agencies.

“We are going to come out with a blueprint. Instead of recruiting people into the police force, we are going to build a strong synergy between the communities and the security agencies. The synergy will be from the ward level to the local government level to the state level to the zonal level. It will work because it has been working.

“So, there is no intention to recruit into security agencies in the state and moreover we have introduced ICT into the security operations in the state. We have built a command and control centre where we can communicate with all the DPOs in the state.

“We can see them, speak with them through the cameras. CCTVs have been installed in all black spots throughout the state. We have been monitoring and it is working. We have also installed the most powerful vehicle tracker in the country which operates even beyond Kano State. That is why Kano State is a trap where kidnappers can be arrested.

“Kano State, as of today, is the most peaceful state in the country. There are no armed robbery, no banditry, no tribal conflicts and no religious conflicts. You will recall that those who attacked the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State were arrested in Kano.

“We have introduced ICT into security administration in the state. That is why we are succeeding. We have full cooperation among the security agencies and Kano is providing a conducive environment for the security agencies, especially in terms of community policing.”

Sultan Abubakar had, on Thursday, distanced himself and the Northern Traditional Rulers from the Operation Shege Ka Fasa, saying traditional rulers in the region were not consulted before the security outfit was inaugurated.

Besides, he said the natural rulers were not in support of the regional body.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Northern Security Monitoring Committee in Kaduna State, the Sultan expressed disappointment at what he called the failure of Northern leaders and the elite to provide good leadership for the people.
Such leaders, he said , were responsible for the establishment of the security outfit .

At the Wednesday launch of the Operation Shege Ka Fasa in Kaduna, spokesman for the Coalition of Northern Group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said the security outfit was to protect lives and property in the region.

He said the formal inauguration would take place in the next few weeks.

The group has already procured vehicles and trained personnel in preparation for the commencement of the operation.

It said the Operation Shege Ka Fasa would complement the efforts of the police, the military and the state security services to detect, expose and defeat all criminal machinations and carry out specific and general tasks that would realign the attitude and thinking of the public with the ideals and objectives of the founding fathers of the North.

A 46-year-old American woman, Jeanine Delsky, has arrived at Panshekara, a suburb of Kano, to marry her 23-year-old online boyfriend Sulaiman Babayero Isa.

Ms Delsky, who lives in California, USA, landed at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano on Saturday and went straight to Panshekara to meet the parents of her lover.

The two lovers met on Instagram one year ago, exchanged pictures and started online courtship.

In an interview with our reporter, Ms Delsky said she decided to follow her boyfriend to Kano because of her love for him.

She said many people had courted her online but she found Mr Isa as the most loving and sincere.

The mother of two said they both agreed to get married and fly to the US where they intend to settle.

Holding the hands of her beau and smiling, Ms Delsky said she realised her dream by meeting the love of her life.

“He messaged me on Instagram saying Hi,” she said in a separate interview with Kano Focus.

“I didn’t respond because I have had experiences with Nigerian scammers.

“But there was a guy messaging me and Sulaiman knew he was a scammer so he said “get a job and quit scamming innocent people.” “So I thought he sounded like a nice guy.”

Mr Isa, who has just finished secondary school, said that he is ready to follow his girlfriend to America to settle and build a family.

He said he was not bothered about the age gap, adding that “it’s even the Sunna of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, Peace be Upon Him, to marry a woman who is far older than you”.

Mr Isa, a barber, expressed optimism that Ms Delsky would one day accept Islam and become a Muslim.

Mr Isa’s mother, Fatima Suleman, said she had no objection to her son’s relationship with American girlfriend, noting that she would pray for them to have a happy married life in America.

The wedding is expected to hold in March.

According to a report by the Dala FM, the wedding took place on Sunday night at Kan Fako area of Dorayi town in Gwale local government area of the state. On her part, the bride said she would be an obedient wife to her groom, even though he is seven years younger than her.“My happiness today is equal to that of a pilgrim travelling to Mecca. I am in a happy mood because I have found the love of my love. I promise to be obedient to him. We shall live as husband and wife and do whatever married couples do, not only to be bringing him water or taking water to the toilet for him. I will be cooking him delicious food,” she promised.

Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje has appointed Emir of Kano, HRH Muhammad Sanusi II, to chair Kano State Council of Chiefs. The appointment takes effect Monday December 9.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abba Anwar, in a statement obtained by 9News Nigeria said the appointment was in line with the provisions of Sections 4 (2) (g) and Section 5((1) (2) of the Kano State Emirate Councils Law 2019, which empowered the Governor to make such appointment.

Mr Sanusi would head the state’s council of chiefs while the newly appointed emirs would serve as members.

“It is also directed that the Chairman shall immediately summon the inaugural meeting of the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Law,” Mr Anwar said.

Mr Ganduje had last week explained that the headship of the Kano State Council of Chiefs would be rotational among the emirs in the state.

Mr Ganduje insisted on creating the new emirates despite public criticism that his intention was to reduce the influence of Mr Sanusi who has been critical of his administration.

However, Mr Ganduje while assenting to the law creating the emirate said the creation of the four new emirates is a response to age long and popular demand of people of the state. He said his action was guided by the calls received from across the 44 local government areas in the state for the need of new emirates.

He added that the development would bring traditional institutions closer to the people in facilitating speedy development and security in the state.

Mr Ganduje signed the new law creating the four new emirates last week, hours after the Kano Assembly passed it. The law was passed within three days by the lawmakers without holding a public hearing.

A similar law creating the new emirates had earlier been invalidated by a court which said due process was not followed.

Ganduje urged all the Council members to utilize the opportunity to serve the people in the state and to strengthen the Emirates and the traditional system of administration in the State in advising the state government, more particularly on security matters.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna has on Friday afternoon reaffirned the election of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State.

The five-man panel of Appeal Court judges led by Justice Tijjani Abubakar unanimously ruled that, the appeal filled by Abba Kabiru Yusuf and his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lacks merrit.

They hereby dismissed the appeal in its entirity and affirmed that, Governor Ganduje was elected by the majority of Kano voters.

Meanwhile, counsel to the appellants, the PDP and Abba Kabiru Yusuf, Bashir Yusuf Muhammad said, they would appeal the judgement.

He said, the reasons for the decisions arrived in the judgement had not been given, but they would get the full judgement to know the basis of the judgement before proceeding to the Supreme Court.

It would be recalled that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate had on April 11 filed a petition at the Appeal Court against the October 2nd judgement of the election petition tribunal which upheld the election of Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 24 supplementary election held in some electoral wards in Kano state.

However, in a unanimous judgement delivered on the petition on Friday, a five-man panel of the court led by Justice Tijjani Abubakar dismissed the appeal by the PDP and its governorship candidate, Abba Yusuf.

The court affirmed the October 2nd judgment of the Kano State Governorship Election Tribunal, which had dismissed the petition by PDP and its candidate, challenging Ganduje’s victory at the supplementary election.

It could be recalled that the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal led by Justice Halima Shamaki had in its unanimous judgment on October 2nd, dismissed the petition filed by the PDP and Yusuf on grounds that the petitioners failed to prove their claims that the election was marred by irregularities and substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

The tribunal also held that INEC was right in declaring the March 9 election in Kano State inconclusive and also in declaring Ganduje the winner of the supplementary election held on March the 23rd.

The lower court also said that declaring an election inconclusive where there are lawful reasons is constitutional.

Police in Kano have beaten to death a 26-year-old man, Abdulkadir Nasiru, after his father took him to police station for questioning.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the father handed over the son the Madobi Police Station after policemen went to his residence in search of him over a case of neighborhood gang fight.

Nasiru Madobi, the father of the deceased told DAILY NIGERIAN that as a law-abiding citizen, when his son returned home he took him voluntarily to the police station for interrogation.

“A quarrel ensued when a policeman started slapping and beating him in my presence after an argument. When another officer joined the quarrel to beat him, he started retaliating,” he said.

According to the father, three more policemen soon took sticks to beat his son to a pulp.

“The situation made me leave the police station immediately as I could not stand the pain of seeing my son being beaten on a simple matter that can be resolved among parents.

Crying profusely, Mr Madobi added that when he reached home he sent the elder brother of the deceased to plead with the police.

Also narrating how the incident happened, the elder brother to the deceased, Ahmed Nasir, said the policemen ignored his pleas and kept beating his brother until he fell down unconscious with his mouth foaming.

According to him, he had to pay N8,000 before police allowed him carry his unconscious brother to the hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors.

The family then appealed to the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and commissioner of police to ensure that justice is served.

Spokesman for Kano Police Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the incident, saying four policemen have been arrested.

Mr Kiyawa said the case had been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department for proper investigation.

He said the command would take decisive action against officers involved in the killing after investigation.

The emir of Karaye, Ibrahim Abubakar II, also called for proper investigation into the death, calling on the commissioner of police to ensure that all those behind the act were brought to book.

Kano (9News Nigeria) – There was panic on Saturday night around Zoo road in Kano metropolis when a lion escaped from its cage at Kano Zoological garden.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident happened around 9 p.m. when the rangers were trying to put it back to its cage after they returned it from the national agricultural show which took place in Nasarawa state.

A source at the zoological garden told NAN that effort was being made to capture the animal which was still within the zoo premises.

Malam Rabiu Lawal, a resident of Zoo Road, told NAN that he has locked up his house until announcement is made of the capture of the lion.

”My entire family members will be indoors even if it will take one month to recover the lion. I have not experienced this kind of fear since I packed into this area more than 15 years,” he said.

NAN reports that residents of the area went indoors earlier than usual to avoid the consequences of an encounter with a loose lion.

As at the time of filing this report armed policemen have been deployed to the area while a search team was trying to capture the lion.

The Management of Kano Zoological Garden has deployed a team of experts to capture the escaped lion which is said to still be within the Garden.

The Managing Director of the Zoo, Alhaji Saidu Gwadabe told NAN in Kano on Sunday that the experts were armed with necessary weapons.

He said this was to ensure the success of the operation as well as the safety of their lives and the residents of the area.

He said the team would do everything possible to capture the escaped animal alive.

“We don’t want to kill the lion unless it becomes the last option as they can shot it to make it unconscious.”

He said the operation which started on Saturday night had to be suspended around 11 p.m. because of the darkness of the bush where it was currently hiding in the zoo.

He, however, expressed hope that the operation would be successful as the lion had not destroyed or harmed anyone.

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has forwarded the names  of 36 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries to NDLEA for drug test to establish their mental state of health before assuming duties.

The governor warned that any of the new appointees who fails the test would be dropped, adding that his administration has zero-tolerance for drugs.

According to him, the measure was aimed at ensuring that only those with sound mental health were appointed to position of authority, to enable them offer quality and effective leadership to enable the state government  ascend to the next level of economic growth.

The governor, who spoke in Kano yesterday after the swearing-in of the 36 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries by the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Ibrahim Mukthar, urged the new Permanent Secretaries to focus on Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), so as to  be able to pay the N30,000 approved minimum wage to all civil servants.

The governor also advised the permanent secretaries to demonstrate leadership by example by being the first to resume and the last to depart, adding that they must avoid indiscipline, lateness and early closing from work.

Reiterating that he is gender sensitive, Ganduje noted that of the 36 newly appointed permanent secretaries, 11 of them were females, which constitute 30 per cent of the appointees.

He added that women are a lot more committed and focused than their male counterparts.

The Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Muhammadu Sanusi II has received international appointment by the United Nations, UN.

Sanusi was appointed as one of the new Advocates for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UN Secretary General, António Guterres made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday in New York.

Guterres said the appointment was sequel to the UN Member States agreement to accomplish the SDGs by 2030.

The statement noted that the newly appointed Advocates are 17 influential public figures from around the world.

The appointees are to romote the goals, raise awareness with new audiences; maintain global commitment and call for greater ambition and scalable action to achieve the SDGs objectives by 2030; among others.

Sanusi is the only Nigerian on the 17-man list of SDGs Advocates co-Chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway.

The appointment came in less than 24 hours after Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje announced the creation of four new Emirates in the state, thereby reducing the powers of Emir Sanusi.

Ex-governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shekarau announced his decision to join the ruling party after a closed-door meeting with the national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole. The closed-door meeting was held on Friday in Kano State.

THE Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Sa’ ad Abubakar, yesterday, warned that the quest for peace in the country may continue to elude it until leaders embrace justice in their actions.

This was even as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, identified lack of birth control as Nigeria’s biggest problem, saying the development was time-out waiting to explode.

They spoke yesterday,in Abuja, at the National Stakeholders’ Summit on the 2019 election integrity, organised by a civil society organization, under the aegis of Youths Off The Street Initiative.

The Sultan of Sokoto, while regretting the spate of killings in the country, insisted that resort to justice and equity by those in the affairs of leadership was a panacea to addressing the ugly trend.

He enjoined religious leaders, especially of the Christian and Muslim faith to take active responsibilities in educating adherents of their religions on the need to embrace peace and harmonious living among one another.

Hear him:”Leaders across the length and breadth of the country must ensure that justice stand as the strongest of what we must do especially if we want to have a God fearing society.

” We cannot claim to be God fearing when, as a leader, there is no justice in whatever you do.

” If you know the consequences of holding a public office when you are going to face the almighty God, you will not want to hold a public office. People feel you just come into public office, take whatever you want to take, go about in convoys.

” That is not leadership. If you are elected by people, let them come near you so that you feel their pains. You can’t be in an office and nobody comes close to you. A leader must take decision concerning his people by consultations.
” You don’t just wake up and enact a law that is totally against my freedom. These are things that we must continue to speak out as religious and traditional rulers.

“There is nothing to fear about because if we don’t tell the truth, it will one day work against you and you will find yourself in a bad place and you will be struggling to get out of it and you won’t be able to. God is a merciful God,
“He is for all and is not a wicked God. He is mainly with the downtrodden and He hears their cry faster that the leaders.

“If you hear so much cry, then something is wrong with the leadership and that leadership must take correction so that we see how to get things right. As religious leaders we must come together and realize that there are so many things we have in common than the few things that we lead us astray and those few things can lead you to hell fire as religious leaders. We must be very serious about how we do things as religious leaders and if we want to have a country.

” We must be serious about the cry of the common man who is crying daily for one thing or the other. We think that things are right. Definitely, things are not right and when you know that there is a problem, then it is half solved. We must agree that there is problem so that we now know that we have half of the solution. The more we come together and talk, the more we come closer to the solution.”

Continuing, the Sultan said:”As Othman DAN Fodio said, a country can endure with unbelief, but country can’t endure injustice and that is why as leaders, we must put justice first as the strongest pillar.

“There are so many organizations, some very small and others big, but one thing that is clear is that everybody is talking positively about what must happen in Nigeria and that is what we must do, by insisting that things must happen the way the constitution which is the law of the land and our religion permits them to happen.

“As Christians and Muslims, we know the sacredness of life. We cannot go about killing innocent people and claiming to be doing so in the name of religion.

” This is not right and must be condemned and must be removed from our communities. All of us must rise up against those people and let them know that this is not our religion.

” We have done this over time. There is too much blood shedding in Nigeria, the blood of innocent people who do not even know what is happening or what is governance.

“This is happening across the country and if we don’t stop this and recognize the sacredness of human life, we cannot see peace, we cannot have peace and development in any place.

” Nigerians must wake up and know that we must come together because our religion does not allow us to kill people, but preach peaceful coexistence, loving your neigbour as your self and things like that.

” So. When people spread a different notion about what Islam or Christianity said about loving your neigbour by killing him or abusing him everyday and calling him all manner of names, I don’t know.

“The CAN President speaks for the millions of Christians in the country and I speak for my own brothers and sisters who are Muslims.

“You don’t have to bring everybody. You just need to bring the leadership to a room to discuss, but we must discuss what we believe in and what our religion order us to.

“Once we go out, we can through the Media spread that campaign. It is one thing to come to a meeting and say one thing, it is another to go out and implement those that things we agree on.

” In Islam, for you to do what you don’t believe in is very bad and so, you can not say one thing and do another. So, we must do what we say and work with what we believe in.”

While decrying actions of most politicians in politics, the monarch cautioned that decency must be imbibed if the nation’s democracy must grow.

“People see politics as do or die. We should not see it that way. That is why we tell out politicians always that they should not feel they must be in a particular office always. You can contribute to the development of the country or your community by being an independent person. It is not by force for you to go into a public office.”

He spoke further:”As Christians and Muslims. We came together to fight the issue of mosquitoes. Mosquito does not have any religion, they go to church on Sunday and mosque on Friday. We came together to fight that common problem. Now, we have a very common problem of thuggery, violence, terrorism, shedding innocent blood among others. We must come together and solve this problem and when we take decision on this, please let us go back and implement those decisions.

“The youths are the main problems of this country because you are the ones being used by the big men to go and kill people. The children of these big men are never part of these noise making. They are studying abroad and living in highly fortified houses and when they go out, there is always a society man with them. But you take a few naira from the politicians and go out to shout and kill people. We must ensure that there is a peaceful election in 2019 and that we have one man, one vote, one woman one vote, one youth who is not under age, one vote and the vote must count. We must work hard to ensure that the votes count and the election must be peaceful, campaign must be carried out with respect. If we believe that you are good enough, we vote for you.”

On his part, the Oni of Ife, while charging citizens to see Nigeria first before their personal interest, noted that:”The common thing that binds us together is our dear nation Nigeria.”

” The name Nigeria is greater than all of us. The day we know that the name is above all of us irrespective of our religion or beliefs concerning different political affiliations and class, a lot of things will be better.

” I am opportunity to be a traditional ruler not by my power, but because it was ordained by God. We have had many leaders in different areas and they have done their and left the stage, including several presidents.

” But this country still remain. It is time for us know that something is greater than us and so, we should respect the land. Nigeria is a brand that we can all, not do without. But how well are we treating the brand, right from leadership to fellowership? Something is fundamentally wrong in this country.

” We should know this and not treat it with lip service. This country is growing every day and nobody is talking about birth control.”

The Ooni of Ife decried lack of birth control in the country, saying it was a serious problem waiting to confront the country ahead.

“Lack of birth control is a serious problem of this country and nobody is talking about it.

“The population of Nigeria now is between 190 and 200 million. GSM subscribers right now is about 120 million people, the registered voters released by INEC is over 70 million. The population of Nigeria now is getting to 70million. People under 30years of age constitute about 60 percent of the population and that is a lot of human power. People above 50 are less than 30 percent of the population while the leadership demography of this country is less than 1 percent. They have been ruling us since 1960.

” Let us compare notes and be realistic and face the fact that there is a problem in this country. Let us not hide under any color. The active population of this country is about 150 million people with a bleak future.

The young men that were apprehended and paraded for kidnapping the Chibok girls are below the age of 30..

” They thought they were doing business because they are very ignorant of what they were doing. There is problem in this country. What are our leaders doing to orientate them? How are we orientating our youths? Anytime we want to destroy this country, we go to this set of Nigerians, give them a few money and the whole problem will start and the leaders won’t be able to handle it.

“The oxygen of ideal politics is the people, but in Nigeria, the oxygen of Nigerian politics is money, see and buy. What a nation? We are not all safe. It is about time for us to know that the leaders of this country are not safe, same thing with the followers because a lot of the youths of this country are ignorant.

What they want to do is sustain themselves and they need basic things to do that. Are we going to fold our hands and keep talking and the walk?
” The problem is our problem.

Election is coming now and we are talking about one man, one vote. We can do all the talks for forever, but what are we doing. There is true leadership and true followership. We all know that oxygen is life and the oxygen of Nigerian politics is money. But everybody that is in leadership position should know that man made money and it has expiration date. Where is the sense of integrity and content of your character? What are our religious leaders doing? How well are we installing values in people that are so low to us. Our leaders will celebrate construction of roads and building bridges.

” What are you there to do? The way it is designed is that there should be leadership and there should be followership. Leadership is about accountability. Every time, you must leave your doors open.

” Leadership is examination and you will not hear the result of your examination when you are still a leader because people will be hailing you. When you leave that position, your phone will stop ringing and they will move to another leader. When are we going to have a very strong character and moral in our society. The problem is not just our leader, but all of us. It is very important for us to invest in Nigeria Youths because the oxygen of politics of money.

“This country belong to all Nigerians and the welfare of every Nigeria must count. The way the votes of Nigerians will count individually, the welfare must also count. We are going into the next political dispensation, let us talk to ourselves. Thieves, armed robbers, terrorists are not faceless people. They live in our midst and we can fish them out if we are serious enough. If we are serious enough, then we should let them know that they can ostracized from the society and that they don’t have a place in this society. We should all come together and see how to better the lots of our youths.”

A student of Civil Engineering department of the Bayero University in Kano, Husseina Nalado and a leader of the Shi’ia sect have allegedly been killed by mobile policemen in Kano state.

Trouble started after the police intercepted the annual Arbaeen annual trek of the group in the town. A witness revealed that sect members were intercepted at the popular Lado overhead bridge along Zaria road in Kano.

The policemen allegedly stopped them by firing teargas and live bullets. Many people sustained injuries in the incident. Kano is among the states that have outlawed the activities of the group.

Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the sect, has been in detention since December 2015 when his followers clashed with some soldiers.

A 60-year-old woman identified as Hajia Amina Usman, and three of her relatives died from a fire accident in the metropolitan area of Kano State.

The fire consumed their building where large quantities of petroleum products were stored.

Executive Director, Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Mohammed M. Rilwanu said the tragedy occurred Wednesday morning about 10.30pm in Tudun Murtala area of the metropolis.

He said the victims included a woman, her child Wuzilla Usman, a 7-year-old relative, Mukthar Uzairu and two others whose names and correct identities were yet to be confirmed.

“On arrival, the officer in charge was informed that five people were trapped at the scene of the blaze”, he said.

“And in line with our profession, we commenced efforts to secure the victims while the officer in charge requested for an ambulance to convey them to the Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital in the state.

“One of the victim was unconscious while others were confirmed dead.”

Rilwan appealed to members of the public to desist from storing petroleum products in their homes because of the high risk involved.

Kano State Government and Dangote Group have donated N500 million each as assistance to victims of the fire outbreak that occurred early this year in five major markets in Kano.

The Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote announced the donation on Saturday in Kano.

Dangote who headed the appeal fund committee for the victims, said the gesture was to ameliorate the suffering of those affected by the disaster.

“Times are hard and If not for the recession which we are also affected I would have donated more than this amount,” he said.

‎He called on other wealthy individuals and organization to come to the aid of the traders.‎

‎‎Earlier, Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, said that the state government had also donated N500 million to the victims.

He said that apart from the appeal fund committee, the state government had also set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to determine the causes of the fire incidents.

According to him, the commission had since submitted its report and a White Paper issued.

The governor said, as part of the recommendations of the commission, the government had commenced structural and road projects at Kantin Kwari market.

Ganduje disclosed that goods and properties worth over N28 billion were lost to the seven fire incidents ‎in five major markets in the state.

‎In a remark, the Emir of Kano, Muha‎mmad Sanusi II commended the government for the gesture and called on wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to also donate to the fund.

Alhaji El-Amin Ibrahim, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano state, has decamped to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Ibrahim told newsmen in Kano on Saturday that his decision to cross carpet was borne out of his desire and commitment to serve people and ensure that promises made to the electorate were fulfilled.

“All my cross carpeting has been from the ruling parties to oppositions and on three occasions I held a party to win election.
“I am not in politics to use political office to make financial gains.
“I am in politics to serve the people,” he said.

The decamped, who, is popularly known as Ibrahim-little, said his decision to move to the People’s Democratic Party was borne out his conviction that APC had not been able to fulfilled the promises it made to electorate.

NAN reports that Ibrahim-little was the former state chairman of the defunct All people’s Party (APP) as well as a gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the party in 2003. (NAN)

The UN has allocated over $10.5 million to help thousands of vulnerable in need of life-saving humanitarian assistance in the devastated Nigeria’s northeast.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, said that the fund would prioritise life-saving assistance to victims of Boko Haram insurgency.

A statement by Mr. Abiodun Banire, National Public Information Officer, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) quoted Kallon as saying in Abuja.

Kallon described the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria’s north-east and the Lake Chad region as one of the most severe in the world today, with 8.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.

He said that the people were in three worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe out of which 6.9 million people were targeted for humanitarian assistance.

Kallon said that the 10.5 million dollars allocation by the new fund the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) would prioritise life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable.

He said that it would also expand the humanitarian assistance provided by the UN and partners to the hard-to-reach and newly accessible areas.

“This crisis has caused an untold loss of life and liberty across the north-east of Nigeria and civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.

“These funds will go towards addressing some of the key priority areas in the humanitarian response that have not yet been financially supported,”Kallon said.

He added: “These include the provision of safe drinking water, emergency shelter and health services to those in need”.

According to him, the 10.5 million dollars will fund about 15 different projects which were selected by the various sectors of the humanitarian response and approved by the NHF Advisory Board.

Kallon said that the projects target and address the needs of the most vulnerable people in locations where access is sporadic and where flooding, disease outbreaks and new displacements continue to take place

He said that such places include Monguno, Mafa, Pulka and Rann in Borno and Michika in Adamawa.

“The funds will also support efforts to enhance the protection of civilians in vulnerable communities and those trapped in conflict areas.

“The NHF contributes to the overall international humanitarian appeal for Nigeria this year for 1.05 billion dollars as detailed in the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan.

“It is the fourth largest single-country appeal globally. To date, the appeal is 43 per cent funded,” he said.

He explained that the NHF was one of 18 country-based pooled funds and was launched during the Oslo Humanitarian Conference on Nigeria and the Lake Chad Region in February 2017.

The Federal Government on Saturday received no fewer than 198 Nigerians illegally residing in Saudi Arabia at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport at about 10 am.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this number was out of the 1,800 Nigerians living illegally in Saudi Arabia, who were given amnesty to return to the country.

NAN reports that the 198 persons including women and children returned with their luggage on board a Med-View aircraft.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kano received the first batch of the returnees.

Mohammed Yahaya-Sani, the Consular at the Nigerian Consulate in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, who led the illegal immigrants to Nigeria, told newsmen at the airport that the Federal Government sponsored their return.

According to him, the illegal migrants voluntarily reported to the Nigerian Embassy to be returned to Nigeria in compliance with the three months evacuation notice issued to them by Saudi authorities, which will expire on July 24.

Yahaya-Sani said that contrary to speculations, the returnees were not deported rather they voluntarily accepted the amnesty offer granted them by the Saudi authorities for illegal immigrants to leave the country.

“They decided on their own to return to Nigeria. The Saudi authorities offered amnesty to all illegal immigrants to leave the country within three months,” he said.

The official handed over the returnees to NEMA officials at the airport who witnessed and documented their returns before they later departed to their various towns and villages. (NAN)

The Federal Government has identified 15 poorest local government areas in Kano State for the implementation of its National Social Safety Net Programme (NASSP) in the state.

The programme is aimed at empowering poor and vulnerable households in the country.

Mr Peter Papka, the National Coordinator, National Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), disclosed this at the training workshop on Community Based Targeting Team (CBTT) for identification of the poor and vulnerable in Kano on Wednesday.

He said 180 persons identified from the 15 local government areas would be trained on CBTT process that would guide identification of the beneficiaries in the selected areas.

He said the federal government would work in partnership with the state Ministry of Planning and Budget to identify the poor and vulnerable households in the state and maintain the social register of the beneficiaries under the programme.

“That register will henceforth serve as a platform for all poverty interventions that will come to the state either from the federal government or donor agencies,” he said.

Papka explained that the programme was aimed at establishing the building blocks of a national social safety net system for effective targeting and delivering of targeted cash transfers and livelihoods support to extreme poor and vulnerable households.

“While government spending on poverty reduction interventions has been on the increase, there has not been commensurate movement of people out of poverty.

“In recognition of this unacceptable trend and its implication to national development, the federal government felt it necessary to build stronger institutions and systems to sustain poverty reduction interventions,” Papka said.

According to him, 11 states have been selected for the programme under the first phase, while nine additional states will be engaged in the programme in the next six months.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, said the state government had earmarked N500 million for the implementation of a similar programme in the state this year.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, the governor commended the federal government for initiating the programme.

Ganduje noted that the programme would go a long way in alleviating the hardship being experienced by the less-privileged in the society. (NAN)

KANO — Kano State House of Assembly, yesterday, called off the probe of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi 11, over Kano Emirate finances, following the intervention of some prominent Nigerians.

They include Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; two former military Heads of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd); General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; Aliko Dangote, and Aminu Dantata.

The state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in a letter to the House and read by the Speaker, Alhassan Rurum, asked the lawmakers to halt the probe of the emir.

Governor Ganduje listed the names of the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo; party leaders, former heads of state, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar, Aliko Dangote, Aminu Dantata, among others, as those who lobbied on behalf of the emir.

While Ganduje pleaded with the lawmakers to suspend the investigation, he, however, recognized their independence as an arm of government.

The governor explained in the letter that at a peace meeting with the emir in Kaduna, the emir admitted all his mistakes and apologised to him.

A member of the House, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Vanguard that the governor actually asked the House of Assembly to stop the probe of the emir in honour of the prominent citizens, who intervened on the traditional ruler’s behalf.

Consequently, the House unanimously approved the governor’s request by suspendin g further action on the probe.

But a member from Kano South, who spoke with Vanguard on conditions of anonymity, expressed  displeasure over the overbearing influence of the executive, which brought the Sanusi II saga to an abrupt end.

“We wanted to set the record straight, and restore dignity to royalty but the intervention from eminent Nigerians has put an end to it,” he said.

An impeccable source in the House confided in Vanguard that plans were on by the lawmakers to create additional four emirates in the state.

Kano, a one city state of 15 million people, with 44 local government areas, has one emirate council following the creation of Jigawa State in 1991.

The source said the new thinking was “designed to water down Sanusi II’s larger than life image of his emirship and restore dignity to royalty that is fast losing its candour and respect under his watch.”

Emir Sanusi had almost always lived at the top. The grandson of a famed emir, a product of some of the best schools in the country, Kings College, Lagos, ABU Zaria; the first Northern CEO of Nigeria’s First Bank, a banker of bankers with a respectable pedigree in Islamic knowledge and postulations; his enthronement as monarch should not have agitated anyone.

So, why is His Royal Highness in trouble?

THE decision of the Kano State House of Assembly to investigate allegations of impropriety against the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Muhammadu Sanusi II, again throws up another captivating vista of politics in conflict with the palace.

The king’s subjects in Kano have constituted themselves into a panel to try the king. The unfolding situation in Kano is seen as the comeuppance from the political class for the emir’s chastisement of the Northern establishment for its crass opportunism and oppression of the common man.

Serikin Kano had stirred the hornet’s nest during the recent Kaduna State investment summit hosted by his long-time friend, Governor Nasir El-Rufai when he flayed claims by the governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari that the recent meningitis epidemic that led to the death of more than 300 lives in his state was God’s punishment for the sins of the people.

However, that was not the first time that the radical emir would raise a stir among the Northern establishment. He had even taken his criticisms to the national level with his chastisement of the economic policies of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Speaking at an economic conference last September, the emir who was himself a harsh critic of the Goodluck Jonathan administration had warned that Buhari could end up like the Jonathan if he did not change his style.

“If this government continues to behave the way the last government behaved, we will end up where Jonathan ended. You may not like it, but that is the truth. You have to listen.

“You don’t have to be an economist to know that any system that allows you to sit in your garden, and with a telephone call, make one billion naira without investing a kobo, that system is wrong. It is unsustainable.

Of course, dissent had not been a too distant character of the Emirs of Kano in post-independence Nigeria. In fact, all three Emirs of Kano since 1960 have had brushes with the respective political authorities over Kano.

Emir Muhammad Sanusi I, who was Emir of Kano between 1954 and 1963, had a presence that rubbed negatively with the then equally powerful premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello who was a distant cousin.

Emir Sanusi I who hosted Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of England in 1956 was a man of political grace and grandeur. He was indeed, at one time a pal of Sir Bello and a major political player in the Northern People’s Congress, NPC until rivalry separated the two men. As emir of the most economically vibrant town in Northern Nigeria which made by far the greatest contribution to the economic well-being of the North, Emir Sanusi, even though the fourth in rank among northern traditional rulers saw himself as only comparable with the Sultan of Sokoto.

Over a period, the premier initiated moves to humble the emir. One humble pie served on the emir was the appointment of one Alhaji Aliyu, who was Magajin Gari of Sokoto as the provincial commissioner or administrative head of Kano.

For Emir Sanusi, the action of the premier appointing someone from his hometown of Sokoto as the provincial commissioner was not the real insult; the insult was that the Magajin Gari was supposedly a descendant of royal slaves in Sokoto!

It was an insult that so pained the emir, but he certainly could do nothing about it. Emir Sanusi, however, remained unbowed as he continued his royal duties with grace refusing to be cowed by the prince from Sokoto.

There were insinuations that the Sardauna was also peeved by the effrontery of the emir arriving after him at ceremonies allowing him to steal the show!

There were different clashes between the premier and the emir up till 1962 when the Northern House of Assembly commenced an investigation into allegations of financial malpractices against the emir which culminated in his deposition in 1963.

Emir Sanusi chose to relocate to Azare in Bauchi province after his deposition, and his request was not opposed by his one-time ally and friend, Sir Bello who perhaps did not see him again till he died in the January 15, 1966, coup.

Emir Sanusi was succeeded by Emir Ado Bayero who also had his challenges with Governor Abubakar Rimi in the period between 1979 and 1983. Governor Rimi initially won popular approval with the talakawa when he abolished the poll tax and taxes on cattle which were entitlements of the palace. However, a query issued the emir preparatory to a deposition, however, ignited a popular revolt in Kano leading to a three-day riot that paralysed Kano. Emir Bayero also had his brushes with General Muhammadu Buhari who as head of state in 1984 disciplined him and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Sijuwade and banned them from leaving their traditional domains for six months after they made a trip to Israel.

Bayero was succeeded by Emir Sanusi II in 2014 in a transition etched in much political drama. There were claims that Emir Sanusi II’s candidacy for the royal throne of Kano was seriously opposed by the Federal Government headed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Financial recklessness

The reason for the Jonathan crowd opposing Sanusi’s emergence was not difficult to fathom. Sanusi had been removed by Jonathan from his position as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN in February 2014 following an audit report that alleged “financial recklessness and misconduct,” on the part of the Sanusi-led management of the bank.

Sanusi’s sack was laced with its drama as government officials openly complained that his allegations of missing money from the sale of oil was ammunition for the administration’s enemies in the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

His closeness to top APC officials including Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was of no comfort to the administration. However, backed by the powerful APC machine and the fact that Kano State at that time had fallen into the hands of the APC through Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso, Sanusi prevailed over the competition to emerge emir.

Emir Sanusi II since his enthronement has, however, embarrassed his former political allies in the APC with savage attacks on the party’s policies and programmes at federal and at state levels.

Just as his grandfather was shoved out through an investigation of the palace purse, Emir Sanusi II is also being attacked through the same channel in a probe that no one, for now, can presently direct its course.

Unlike the situation in 1963 when Emir Sanusi I was humbled by Bello, the prince from Sokoto, Emir Sanusi II’s traducers are from within Kano, even if they are instigated from outside.

The relegation of traditional authorities to political powers was evident penultimate weekend when Speaker Yakubu Dogara visited his home state, Bauchi.

The local emirs fearing for their thrones ran away from their domains allegedly because they didn’t want to be associated with the speaker, a declared political rival of Governor Mohammed Abubakar. That is how far traditional rulers have gone under their political masters!

The Kano State Chapter of Red Cross Society on Sunday distributed relief materials worth millions of Naira to 516 Internally Displaced Persons (IPDs) in the State.

The Red Cross Chairperson in Kano, Dr. Urrata Balla, presented the materials to the IDPs at Hotoro in Tarauni and Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Areas of the state.

Balla said the gesture was necessary due to the condition IDPs found themselves.

“Red Cross cannot compensate the IDPs over what they have lost but will continue to do everything humanly possible to assist them so as to make them feel and have sense of belonging.

“I also want to call on philanthropists to assist in one way or the other so that everyone should live in a good condition”.

Balla urged IDPs to always monitor the movement of their children when they return to their respective homes to prevent them from associating with bad people.

She said the spread of insurgency that brought about the IDPs was as a result of negligence of some parents to monitor and watch over their children.

Speaking on behalf of the IDPs in Hotoro, and Gaida, Malam Abubakar Mustapha and Malam Magaji Halliru respectively commended the Red Cross for the gesture.

Mustapha said the gesture was highly appreciated, especially with the current economic challenges in the country.

He called on wealthy individuals in the society, government and private organisations to continue to assist them to alleviate their sufferings.

Mustapha commended President Muhammad Buhari for his efforts towards restoring peace in the areas affected by the activities of insurgents.

“We are also appealing to the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency do everything possible to rebuild our houses for us to go back and continue with our normal life,’’ he said.

Items distributed include clothes, shoes, blankets, bed sheets, mosquito nets, jerrycans, plastic buckets, soap and other other essential commodities.

Abuja—DAUGHTER of Muhammad Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, has said her father will gladly let go of the throne if it stands in the way of the truth.

This came as the Emir himself said people who thought he was troublesome would have a lot more to deal with when his children came on the scene.

Speaking in Abuja during the first annual Chibok Girls lecture, Shahida who represented her father at the programme, who said the monarch had dedicated his life to the truth, insisted that her father had always wanted to be the emir, but believed in the truth.

According to her: “My father is not afraid of giving up his throne if it stands in the way of speaking the truth. Those who think that my father would keep quiet because he wants to hold on to his throne, I think they don’t know my father.

I know that he has always wanted to be the emir of Kano but to him, if it comes between what is right, what his conscience tells him and choosing the throne, he would happily give up the throne.

My father has always been a part of one controversy or the other and it’s normal for us. We are not scared anymore. “And honestly, he has been a source of inspiration and pride.

He never fails to fight. He fights for progress, liberty, justice and equality. Those who think they know my father should know that he will never be silenced by blackmail and intimidation.

He lost his position once as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and I remember his quote that you can suspend a man but you can never suspend the truth. I know he does not mind being the most unpopular emir so long he speaks the truth.”

Meanwhile, the emir in a video message to the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, group at the Chibok girls’ inaugural lecture, commended the group for its persistent demand for the rescue of the girls and said the abduction of the Chibok girls raised questions about governance.

Sanusi also urged the BBOG group to broaden its area of advocacy to include women and gender issues. The monarch, who was not present at the lecture, sent his daughter, Shahida, to represent him. He said he decided to send his daughter because she had demonstrated she would not take abuse from any man. According to the emir:

“Those who are opposed to my views or think I am a problem have a much   bigger problem to deal with in the next generation of the Sanusis,” he said. “They are far more radical, they are far more progressive, they far more committed and they are far more fearless. So, it is time we address all these issues before these tigers come on the scene.”

Friday marked the third anniversary of the abduction of 276 girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State. While 81 of the girls have regained freedom, 195 of them are still in captivity.

Of late, Sanusi has been in the news over some candid views that have attracted criticisms. At the second edition of the Kaduna Investment Forum, the traditional ruler called on northern leaders to accept the realities of the modern world, and educate the girl child.

Before then, he called on all religious and traditional leaders to refrain from beating their wives, adding that they will lose their titles if they do so. He also corrected the “Islamically incorrect” views of Abdulaziz Yari, the governor of Zamfara state, who said meningitis is a product of fornication. Last weekend in Morocco, Sanusi said Zamfara state started the implementation of Sharia in Nigeria but now has the highest poverty rate in the country.

In response to Sanusi’s teachings, messages on and off social media have accused the emir of squandering N3 billion of Kano emirate’s money on buying two Rolls Royce and on hiring chartered flights.

Sanusi was also accused of “kissing, holding and romancing ladies in public” with the picture of him hugging a woman in public.

One person lost his life while several houses were destroyed following a heavy down pour in Kura local government area of Kano state.

One of the victims, Malam Lawan Salisu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Saturday that the incident happened on Wednesday night.

According to him, the rainfall which was accompanied by windstorm blew off the roofs of many houses in the affected villages.

He said the 1,000 houses were affected in Dannafake, Iyatawa, Kaniyaka, Zagazagi, Tofa and Yadagungume villages and that the residents now squats with friends and relatives.

Salisu said the Vice chairman of the local government Council, Alhaji Ali Isiyaku-Danhassan, had since visited the affected areas to sympathise with victims.

He called on the state government to come to their aid immediately in view of the monumental disaster.

When contacted, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SERERA), Alhaji Aliyu Bashir, said he has yet to receive report on the incident.

He, however, gave the assurance that necessary measures would be taken to alleviate the suffering of victims in the affected villages.

Rainstorm had also destroyed properties worth million of naira in other states including the FCT this rainy season.

Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Gan­duje, at the weekend, announced plans by his admin­istration to recruit female hold­ers of the National Certificate of Education (NCE) to teach in public primary schools across the state.

Ganduje made this known during the graduation of 500 women trained under the aus­pices of Gandujen Kanawa Economic Empowerment Initiative, promoted by a phi­lanthropist, Hajiya Binta Sani Danmaijuju and supported by the state government. He stated that already, “females with such qualification have been direct­ed to submit their credentials to their local governments of origin for authentication.”

He further stated that the ad­ministration would soon enlist youthful women for training on auto mechanics and allied areas, alongside their male counterparts, at Peugeot Auto­mobile Nigeria Training Cen­ter, Kaduna.

Governor Ganduje main­tained that the measure is part of strategies to give them the skills and confidence necessary to be self-employed, “maintain more comfortable lifestyles, and standardize homes for themselves and their children.”

He recalled that about two weeks ago, the state govern­ment recruited many females among its new tax officers, while many empowerment programmes have been initi­ated for various categories of women in the state in the past 21 months.

“Women empowerment helps women to stand on their own legs, become independent and also to earn for their family which stimulates the economy.

“To empower a woman means to reduce poverty. Sometimes, the money earned by the husband is not sufficient to meet the demands of the family. The added earnings of women help the family to ad­dress the issue of poverty,” he stated.

The governor, therefore, thanked Hajiya Binta Sani Danmaijuju for initiating the empowerment programme for women, assuring that the government would continue to support her towards giving hope to less privileged women.

In her remarks, the initiator of the Gandujen Kanawa Eco­nomic Empowerment Initia­tive, Hajiya Binta Sani Danmai­juju, said the 500 beneficiaries were trained for three weeks on bed-sheet making, beads and jewelry design, hair-dressing, cosmetics making, photogra­phy, soap making and video coverage, among others.

Highlights of the occasion include the presentation of N10,000 to each of the artisans, by the Kano state government as well as an exhibition of wares and products made by ben­eficiaries of the empowerment programme.

The Kano Government has approved more than N37 million for the purchase and distribution of JAMB forms to 5,000 prospective candidates in the State.‎

The state Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, told journalists in Kano on Tuesday that the approval was an outcome of the weekly state’s Executive Council Meeting.

‎He said the council also approved more ‎than N30 million for the renovation of Dandalama ‎Secondary School at Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state.‎
‎
‎Garba added that the council approved ‎more than N247 ‎million for the rehabilitation of Niger, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo roads in Sabon Gari area of Fage Local Government area. ‎

The commissioner also said more than N31 million was approved for the rehabilitation of Gwagwarwa Shariah court.‎

‎“The council also approved N80 million for the purchase of first phase of equipment for the resuscitation of Triumph Newspapers and the constitution of 10-man Management Committee.

“More than N476 million was also approved for the rehabilitation of road networks within Janbulo quarters along Gwarzo Road,” he said.

Garba said that the council also released‎ N145 million for the purchase of delivery Kits at Hospitals ‎across the state.

He said that the council approved more than N64 million for the purchase of ‎Toyota Hilux for the operation of Hisba Board.‎

The commissioner said that government was determination to develop infrastructure as part of its initiatives to improve the welfare of the people.

Many Nigerians regard the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, as a stormy petrel, for his penchant to express his view on any issue.  He recently stirred the hornets’ nest with his proposition to introduce a new law that will restrict polygamy in Kano State.

The former Central Bank Governor had told his Muslim audience: “Those of us in the (mainly Muslim) North have all seen the economic consequences of men who are not capable of maintaining one wife, marrying four. They end up producing 20 children, not educating them, leaving them on the streets, and they end up as thugs and terrorists.”

He disclosed that a sub-committee of scholars in the Kano palace had been working for over a year on a bill, which when passed into law by the government, will restrict indiscriminate polygamy.

Calling it “a big law” that will cover the whole gamut of marriage, from consent to divorce to maintenance of children and inheritance, he avowed it will be the first ever codified muslim law on personal status in Northern Nigeria.

His pronouncement continues to generate an avalanche of responses among the Muslim faithful, with mullahs divided over the proposed law on polygamy. Two Islamic scholars, Prof Ishaq Akintola of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), and Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Ahmed, the Chief Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, agreed with the emir. They believed he was interpreting the letter and spirit of the Quran on marriage injunction.

The bill, Sheikh Ahmed asserted, is not about banning polygamy. According to him, polygamy as an Islamic institution is guided by rules and regulations, not a free for all, and by no means, an avenue for a man to showcase his manly prowess.

He noted that the abuse of polygamy has become widespread and its essence is lost, reducing it to an instrument of oppression, instead of an institution to protect women.

By his assessment, there was nothing anti-Islam about the emir’s proposal, given that a lot of work and consultation were carried out for almost one year.

He spotlighted the crux of the matter. “Whether people marry one wife or none at all, there is poverty in the land. This is something we must seriously address. The law will succeed if there is a programme of massive education and poverty alleviation.”

The bill, when it becomes law, he believed, will exert control on those who are able, those who are capable, and those who are qualified.  Society, according to him, can no longer be indifferent: “For our indifference, we are paying the price of terrorists, hoodlums and area boys, people who didn’t receive adequate parental attention as children, because their parents were either not there or too busy to give them attention,” he said.

“The first line of responsibility for the children is parents who must be gainfully employed to take care of them. I do agree that there is economic injustice, but people cannot procreate irresponsibly and hold the society responsible for the upbringing of irresponsible procreation.  Every man must be responsible for his wife and children––this is what the proposed law is talking about.”

The law will not be a panacea for all of society’s ills, he cautioned. “It is not about just law and order. There is a holistic approach to it and that includes economic justice, equity, fair distribution of resources, good governance, responsive and responsible government.”

Similarly, Prof Ishaq Akintola also welcomes the law on polygamy.  His organisation, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) issued a statement in support of the emir’s proposal.  “In our statement, we made it very clear that Emir Sanusi was interpreting the letter and spirit of the Quran on injunctions concerning marriage.

Sanusi’s proposal is seeking to place conditions before anybody who wants to practice polygamy, such that if you are not capable economically, you cannot practice polygamy,” he said.

Citing Quran 24:33––let those who do not find the means to marry keep chaste until Allah enriches them out of His grace––he argued: “If you are jobless and you have no means to sustain and maintain a wife, then you have no business marrying.  By the injunction of Islam, you cannot put a woman in discomfort; you cannot put her where she will be hungry.  You cannot marry more than one wife if you cannot take care of the second wife.”

He observed that many abused the licence to marry more than one wife, thereby reducing women to items to decorate their house. Quran’s grants to marry up to four women, he stressed, is predicated on a crucial condition: that the man will be equitable to the women.

“That (conditional) clause nullifies other statements that came before it. If you cannot maintain two, three or four, then marry only one,” Prof Akintola concluded.

He gave a pragmatic approach to polygamy: “You cannot be living in a single room and decide to put two women there. Even a single flat is not ideal. If you can maintain two flats, then you can marry two women; if you can maintain three flats, then you can marry three.”

He added: “In the African context, if you marry a woman, you are marrying the in-laws; your wife will bring her sister, brother and mother. If you marry a second wife, she also will bring her relations. The third one too will bring those dependants, then you have commotion.”

Polygamy is conditional in Islam, he said, and according to him, what Emir Sanusi and Kano State Government have done was to interpret correctly what Quran says concerning matrimony in Islam.

Conversely, the Council of Imams and Ulama, Kaduna State, disagreed with Sanusi’s postulations and proposal.  The body’s assistant secretary, Imam Musa Tanimu described Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as an economist, not an Islamic scholar (saying “he only has a diploma in Islamic Studies from Sudan”) and that his views on some Islamic issues and doctrines are steeped in economic logic, which are not necessarily Islamic.

“He could have consulted Islamic scholars and jurists,” Tanimu observed. “He raised a lot of issues concerning Islam, which are not relevant because he has refused to consult those who are well grounded and have deep knowledge of the matter. He has forgotten what the Quran says: ‘You should ask the people on knowledge on the issue before you talk about it’.  If he had thought about that passage of the Holy Quran, he would not have made that statement that he was going to propose a bill to the Kano State House of Assembly to the effect that before you add another wife, you have to fulfill some financial conditions.”

The slant of Sanusi’s viewpoints, he pointed out, are understandable given his background as economist.  “But that is not what Islam is looking for.  Even the first, the second, the third and the fourth wife does not depend only on economic consideration or financial capability.”

He highlighted other conditions necessitating marriage: “If you are not able to protect your sexual desire, if you are not able to prevent your eyes from looking at women, if you are not able to control your ear from hearing obscenity, then marriage is recommended.”

Marriage, according to him, is for those in need (such as sexual need or need for child) and who have the capability to marry.

“Capability means financial capacity to provide.  Take accommodation for example. What type of accommodation is required? It depends on your financial capability, not necessarily you going to provide a three-bedroom flat. If she agrees to stay with you in a single room, it is allowed, so long she will be protected in that room. When you look at it from this angle, the Emir made a mistake.”

He thought it prudent for the emir to preach good governance instead.

“When you have good governance, this proposal wouldn’t even arise. Bad governance makes it difficult for people to take care of themselves. With good governance, nobody will be talking about poverty.”

He advised the monarch to tackle the problem from the top, not from the grassroots. “Let him make recommendations on good governance to reduce poverty in the north and country at large,” he concluded.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, says he is on the verge of proposing a law which will restrict poor men in the emirate from marrying many wives.

Sanusi said this in Abuja on Sunday at the 50th anniversary of the death of Ambasador Isa Wali, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana who died on active duty on February 19, 1967.

The monarch said he had been able to establish a connection between polygamy, poverty and terrorism.

Sanusi said he would ensure that the law would be passed by the Kano State Government as a way of immortalising the late Wali who was one of the first northern elements to advocate gender equality.

He said, “Those of us in the North have all seen the economic consequences of men who are not capable of maintaining one wife, marrying four. They end up producing 20 children, not educating them, leaving them on the streets, and they end up as thugs and terrorists.

“It is perhaps a tribute to Mallam Isa that today, as I speak, in the palace in Kano a sub-committee of scholars, which I set up and has been working for about a year, is finalising the final sections of a family law we intend to introduce in Kano which will address some of the issues that Mallam Isa was concerned about.

“The law will address what Islam says on marriage, it will outlaw forced marriages, it will make domestic violence illegal, it will put in conditions that you need to fulfil before you can marry a second wife, it will spell out the responsibilities of a father beyond producing a child.

“It is a big law which covers a whole range of issues from consent to marriage, to maintenance to divorce, to maintenance of children and inheritance. It will be the first time in northern Nigeria that a Muslim law on personal status will be codified.”

Sanusi, who said there was nothing wrong with polygamy if it was practised properly, maintained that women must be given the opportunity to thrive.

The emir said his late predecessor, Ado Bayero, as well as all the princes in Kano were trained in Islamic studies by Wali’s grandmother.

He, therefore, argued that since women were responsible for shaping the lives of future kings in Kano, they were equally qualified to do greater things.

Also speaking, the acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, eulogised the late Wali for challenging social conventions during his time.

According to Osinbajo, it takes courage to challenge the norm in a conservative society.

He said Nigerians need men like Wali who have integrity and the audacity to evoke social change.

Also speaking, a former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon(retd.), praised Wali for his sterling performance in Ghana while he was the Nigerian High Commissioner.

Gowon noted that when the January 15, 1966 coup took place, many of the coup plotters fled to Ghana where the then Ghanaian President, Kwame Nkrumah, gave them protection.

He said Wali was one of those who ensured that the coup plotters were deported to Nigeria to face justice.

A former Foreign Affairs Minister and friend of the deceased, Ambassador Ignatius Olisaemeka, said there was a need for the foreign service to be independent of the Civil Service Commission.

He revealed that the pension of a retired career diplomat was N100,000 a month which he described as shameful.

A former minister and former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Alhaji Maitama Sule, who was also the best man at the wedding of the deceased, said it was unfortunate that despite having some of the most talented people in the world, Nigeria had failed to develop.

Sule said Nigeria strongly needed good leaders like the founding fathers who put public interest ahead of theirs.

Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano State is unarguably one of the most schooled of the current set of governors. With such academic laurels as a National Certificate of Education, NCE, a bachelors degree, two Masters degrees and a doctorate obtained from universities in Zaria, Kano and Ibadan; it is not surprising that he has taken education as one of the priorities of his administration.

He was also schooled in the art of political steadfastness with having understudied his predecessor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwanso for close to sixteen years as deputy governor and as his poitical adviser when the latter served as minister of defence. Ganduje had vied with Kwankwanso for the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in 1998. Kwankwanso who won, however, picked Ganduje to balance the ticket and thus commenced their political collaboration that culminated in his 8 year stint as deputy governor of Kano State.

On the sidelines of activities and celebration of the successes achieved by the administration in the education sector, the governor spoke in an interview on his alleged beef with Kwankwanso, President Muhammadu Buhari’s health status and on his administration’s inclination to education.

Excerpts: Ganduje Some APC stakeholders have expressed concern over the political differences between you and your predecessor and that they are interested in reconciling the two of you. Would you make yourself available for peace talk?

Yes, because I cannot have   any other political associate for the rest of my life like him. Similarly, he too cannot have another political associate like me, for the rest of his life.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical vacation has attracted diverse interests and reactions from several quarters, even including claims that the governors recently took a position on the issue of the presidency. Sir, in all honesty what is the situation of things and have you spoken to the president since he travelled?

What position could the governors have taken (on President Buhari) because I was not there when that issue was discussed. I was not there, so I don’t know the position. I don’t know because I wasn’t there and I have not heard about it. The northern governors met in Kaduna and that was solely on security issues pertaining to the region. But we pray for the president to be back home safely. His sickness was not an agenda and could not also be an agenda . You see, the issue is, I know Nigeria is a big country with multi-religious, multi ethnic, multi everything you can think about, so it is easy to politicise issues that are not supposed to be politicised.

What we believe is that everybody can get sick. So you want us to start calling him while he is sick? He needs some rest. So what is the essence? If he is to talk with every governor, so why is he there to get treatment and rest? So that is that, because people seize the opportunity to talk rubbish and some is just wishful thinking. Some are not wishing him well, so they are not expressing their mind that he is sick, but saying that he is this, he is that. And he wrote formally to the Senate that he would go for a vacation and medical treatment and the vacation was extended, so what kind of information are we looking for again more than that?

Why are you celebrating? Let me start with the challenge   first. First of all as I have been saying, if you have a large population, then you have problems both in education and health, even with the provision of infrastructural facilities. But education is the first victim when the population is large because you have to provide for every child, and it has to be sustained.

So, in basic education, what we observed is that government cannot do it alone, therefore, there is one segment that is being neglected, that is community participation in education. If you look within the highest number of government schools. This is because apart from the population, not many people are interested in investing in education, that is why we have the value like that. Education is so voluminous. Sometimes you become confused on where to start.

But I think if you want to start building, you have to start with a foundation, that is why we are putting emphasis on basic education, to ensure that we get it right, to have as many pupils as possible in schools to reduce the ones outside the school, and to also invite married people, some organisations that could undertake corporate social responsibility to ensure that this concept is embraced by the members of the public and I think we are succeeding.

We have the Education Trust Fund which we want to launch and we want people to get to embrace it. So that is what we are devoting a whole week to basic education, to discuss with stakeholders. Even though the people are many, but as I told you, we will pick the teachers because they are the nucleus of progress as far as education is concerned. If their minds are not at rest, they will be teaching absent-mindedly, you know what I mean.

We will start with them to make sure that they are professionally educated and can deliver according to the ethics of the profession. Time has gone where everybody that is looking for a job would say ‘if I can get even a teaching job I wouldn’t mind,’ but we mind.

We are not looking for everybody to teach, we are looking for those that are qualified to teach. If majority of what we have are unqualified, we have no reason not to allow those that are also unqualified to come and join them. But if gradually we sanitise the system where majority of the teachers are qualified, those who are knocking at the door would be discouraged, because they would know that is not their place.

So that is why we are giving them the opportunity to do on-the-job training and we give them their salaries as a motivation to go on, and they would be upgraded accordingly.

In this concept, talking about the commissioning of class rooms as we have   seen today, what is their number? Well, they are in thousands, I don’t know their exact number but I think they are up to 2,000. They are two types; some are completely new classrooms.

We introduced a new design with two upstairs because of the population and lack of space. We introduced two during the last administration, the ground floor and the first floor, but this time around we had to go higher. And some were provided by some private concerns through the education promotion committee. They built new classrooms too.

Some were renovated by government while some others were renovated by private concerns. So, we have continued irrespective of challenges like congestion of classrooms. For example, we have paid N1 billion as counterpart funding to the Federal government. So we are expecting the FG to give its own 1 billion, that will make it N2 billion. And then when we get this N2 billion we shall see how we can tackle the problem of congestion.

We shall decongest the classrooms and provide furniture.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state said that his administration had paid N1 billion as counterpart funding for the basic education scheme.

Ganduje told newsmen on Thursday in Kano, shortly after the inauguration of 2,000 classrooms in selected primary schools in the metropolis.

“We have paid N1 billion to the Federal Government as our counterpart funding for basic education,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the inauguration of the classrooms and the governor’s visit to some schools were parts of the week-long activities organised by the Ministry of Education to mark the state’s Basic Education Week.

According to him, the Federal Government will also contribute the same amount to the state for the implementation of the basic education scheme.

The governor also said the fund was meant to construct additional classrooms in all primary and Junior Secondary Schools, (JSS), provide furniture among other necessary facilities to enhance teaching and learning.

He said the state would soon launch its Education Trust Fund as part of measures to ensure effective community participation in the development of education.

“If you have a large population, you will have problem in education as government cannot do it alone. So, community participation in education is necessary.

“As you know, not many people are interested in investing in education. Sometimes, you become confused as to where you start, hence our decision to give priority to basic education.”

The governor said the state would also invite experts from the organised private sector and some Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to contribute their quota toward promoting education.

He said the state would continue to give priority to the welfare of teachers and ensure that only qualified ones were allowed in the system.

“We are not looking for everybody to teach. So, we will make sure that we sanitise the system by making sure that only qualified ones teach in our schools.’’

Ganduje said it was in line to improve the education system in the state that, the state government set up Education Promotion Committee in each local government to ensure quality education.

The Kano State ongoing Hydro Power Plant project in Tiga, Bebeji Local Government Area has reached 85 per cent completion and will be inaugurated by the first quarter of 2017, Mohammed Garba, the Kano State Commissioner of Information has said.

Garba who disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while giving the achievements of the state in 2016, said that the completion of the project would improve generation to the state by 100 megawatt.

According to him, the project would also play a vital role in addressing the issue of power shortage across the state.

“The power project will also contribute to boosting the state’s economy because most of the companies in the state will benefit from it,” Garba said.

The commissioner said government was also planning to reshape the famous Kantin Kwari Market and Abubakar Rimi Market, Sabon Gari to modern markets.

He disclosed that government has started these projects with the Kantin Kwari Market that will be converted to a modern three-storey building.

On transportation, the Commissioner said that talks were underway between the Chinese Government and Kano State to provide light railway across the state.

He said; “If the project is completed, it will assist in the transportation of goods across the state and other neighbouring states.”

On the provision of shelter for workers, Garba said 2000 houses would be constructed and sold to civil workers at affordable prices.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has cautioned members of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) in the state against regarding him as a demigod.

” I am not a demigod, so do not worship or prostrate before me or praise sing me always.

” You should also stop being sycophantic to me. I am not more than you.

” I am an equal partner and we are all equal members and stakeholders in the affairs of the party, as well as the state,” he added.

He spoke at the closing ceremony of a three-day Retreat organized for the State’s officials and stakeholders of of the All Progressives Congress( APC), on political party management.

Ganduje stressed the need for the party members to continue to be law abiding and more focussed on ensuring the even socioeconomic development of the state.

The governor further underscored the importance of opposition in bolstering democracy in the country.

On the retreat, Ganduje said that, it was organized to improve the affairs of the party.

” Political parties are often forgotten after elections in Nigeria, this should not be so and this what we want to change in Kano,”he explained

Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje today (Tuesday) disbursed N1 billion interest-free loans under the Commercial Agricultural Credit Scheme (CACS), to 517 farmers associations, comprising about 4, 000 members in the state.

Launching the scheme at the Government House in Kano, Dr. Ganduje explained that the fund was secured from the Central Bank of Nigeria, for promoting commercial agricultural enterprises.

The governor said the loan, which would be disbursed to small and medium scale farmers groups is part of efforts by his administration to diversify agriculture, reduce poverty, create more jobs and enhance food security.

“Agricultural commodities included in the value-added chain to be covered by the loan are dairy production, fishery, cotton, maize, wheat and rice”, the governor highlighted.

“To actualize this initiative and fast track development of the agricultural section of the economy, the need arose to reduce the credit on agricultural production to enable farmers to benefit from the potential of the sector such as to increase output, generate employment and diversify the revenue base of the state”, he maintained.

Describing agriculture as the way out of the current economic recession and an opportunity for farmers to boost their harvest, Governor Ganduje revealed that a workshop would also be organized to train beneficiaries of the scheme on efficient management of the funds.

Consequently, the governor urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the loans, warning that a special mobile court would be constituted to prosecute any beneficiary who defaults in repay the loans at the end of its tenor.

The representative of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, during the occasion, Malam, Abubakar AbdulKadir who made a presentation titled “CACS Fund: Accessibility, Distribution, and Recovery”, explained that the loans were repayable in two years, to enable as many farmers as possible to benefit.

On her part, the state Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Barr. Zubaida Damakka Abubakar, who presented a paper on “How to Run a Successful Agricultural Enterprise”, was of the opinion that farmers should imbibe the attitude of bookkeeping, sourcing raw materials at the cheaper price and maximizing time of production to ensure accountability.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Sani Yadakwari a cattle breeder, whose association received N5 million assured that they would use the loans prudently.

An early morning fire has burnt the foodstuffs section of Mohammed Abubakar Rimi market popularly known as Sabon-Gari market.

The fire which started in the wee hours of Saturday when traders and marketers were at home preparing to come out for their normal business activities.

An eyewitness, Adamu Kofar Mazugal, said: “The fire started at about 4 to 5am in Gida Maggi section of the market where foodstuffs are sold.

He said foodstuffs such as gari, beans and beverages as well as other properties were burnt.

[PUNCH]  Fire has razed down no fewer than 44 shops at the popular Farm Centre GSM market in Kano metropolis on Friday.

Eyewitness and one of the shop owners said in Kano on Friday that the incident happened around 530pm when most of traders had closed for business.

According to the witness, the fire which destroyed phones and other valuables worth millions of Naira, was said to have been caused by a spark from a converter supplying power to some of the shops.

The source said though no life was lost, but no fewer than 44 shops were destroyed by the inferno.

When contacted, the Director of the state Fire Service Alhaji Mustapha Rulwan confirmed the incident.

He said a total of 44 wooden shops were razed by the inferno.

“We received distress call around 5: 20pm and we immediately mobilised our personnel to the area.

“We were able to put out the fire within 45 minutes.”he said.

He said it was an inverter that was being used by some of the traders that caused the inferno as most of the affected shops were made of wood and zinc.”he added.

This is the second time the market was gutted by fire in the last eight months.
