NDLEA arrest 151 suspects in one year in Yobe

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has said that it has arrested about 151 suspects of drug offenders in one year in Yobe state.

Apeh Rueben, the state’s commander of NDLEA stated this while addressing newsmen on Saturday in Damaturu, to mark the annual “United Nation Drug Free Day” with the theme “Share Facts About Drugs, Save live”.

He said that among the suspects, only five are female and 146 men, noting that the success is recorded from July 2020 to June 26, 2021.

According to Mr Rueben, the command had also confiscated a total number 3,790.133kg drugs, 3,751.9805kgs Cannabis Sativa, 38.1525kgs psychotropic substances and 0.0356kg of Heroin.

Also, the command has during the period, prosecuted an all-male cases, totalling 21.

Explaining further, Reuben said his command are doing everything possible to bring enlightenment to the people of Yobe about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

He said they are reaching people towards that effect through a campaign they are hosting in two local languages, Kanuri and Hausa, adding that they are looking forward to add Fulfulde language into the program.

While appreciating support they enjoy from the state government, the commander said the agency has improved under his watch in the state.

‘As you all know, our main office was burnt in 2014 during the attack by Boko Haram. The state government offer us the office we are in now and some cars,’ Reuben said.

He however, call on the state government to establish a treatment center for victims of drug abuse.

‘The government have been very supportive, but we are renewing our earlier call to the state government to establish a drug treatment and rehabilitation center in the state for medical care of drug addicts,’ he noted.

The agency also urge the people of the state to corporate with them in the fight against drug abuse and has vowed to a collaborative relationships in future.
