NIGERIA- A tale of 'Wiggle Town' of clowns whose smiles are frowns, upside down and tears

In the quirky world of Wiggle Town, where the ordinary is turned upside down, one might find a striking resemblance to the current state of Nigeria. The only difference between Nigeria and Wiggle Town is that in Nigeria, lies are truth and propaganda becomes the reality of the day.

In Wiggle Town lives a clown whose smile looks like a frown and is upside down. The cats hide while the rats all hunt. The spoons are sharp, while the knives are blunt. Life there is back to front and front to back. The dogs meow like cats; the lions tweet like the birds. The sugar has turned sour while the salt tastes sweet. The rocks are soft while the pillows turn hard as rock. In Wiggle town, the shepherds sleep while the sheep stand guard. The back is turned to front, front to back while upside is turned downward.

In Wiggle Town, the young are old. The milk is hot, while the tea is cold. The wise are fools. Straight lines are bent, and a square is round. The loudest bells don’t make a sound. There are no rules in Wiggle Town. The short are tall, the tall are short. Fishes fish, and the men get caught. The food is wet; the water is dry. The tearful laugh, the happy sigh. That’s the wonder of Wiggle Town.

Just as the inhabitants of Wiggle Town navigate a reality where “the milk is hot, the tea is cold,” Nigerians are grappling with a political landscape that has become a parody of governance, where normalcy has been replaced by chaos and hardship.

In this peculiar version of reality, the citizens of Nigeria are faced with untold suffering and their smiles are turned upside as signs of anguish. The economy, which had glimmers of hope in the citizens, has become a labyrinth of total despair. Inflation soars, and the cost of living has skyrocketed, leaving many to wonder if they are living in a nightmare. The situation is akin to the Wiggle Town’s “sugar’s sour, the salt tastes sweet,” where the basic necessities of life have become luxuries. The average Nigerian struggles to make ends meet, while the elite continue to thrive, seemingly untouched by the economic turmoil that plagues the masses.

Political intimidation has reached alarming levels, reminiscent of the whimsical chaos in Wiggle Town. The recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which saw the removal of an elected governor to favor a political alliance, exemplifies the lengths to which the Tinubu administration will go to consolidate power. This act, cloaked in the guise of governance, is a stark reminder that in Nigeria, “the wise are fools,” and the rule of law is but a distant memory. The political landscape has been polarized, with opposition parties facing relentless intimidation, forcing many to bow to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to survive.

Freedom of speech, a fundamental right in any democracy, has been stifled under Tinubu’s regime. The recent vilification of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who dared express her frustration over Nigeria’s economic hardship, is a testament to the administration’s intolerance for dissent. In a country where “the loudest bells don’t make a sound,” the press has been muzzled, and journalists live in fear of reprisal for reporting the truth. The government’s heavy-handed approach to criticism has created an environment where silence is golden and speaking out is a dangerous gamble.

Political discourse has been reduced to a mere echo of the ruling party’s narrative. The “short are tall, the tall are short” dynamic of Wiggle Town is mirrored in the political arena, where the voices of the opposition are drowned out by the cacophony of propaganda. The Tinubu administration has effectively eliminated any chance of meaningful opposition, leaving the populace to grapple with a singular narrative that serves the interests of the few.

The economic crisis has not only affected the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians but has also eroded the very fabric of society. The “rocks are soft, the pillows hard” reality is evident in the increasing crime rates and social unrest where citizens engage in anything to survive, such as in a war situation. As desperation sets in, many are pushed to the brink, resorting to measures that threaten the stability of the nation. The government’s failure to address these issues has created a volatile environment where the line between order and chaos is increasingly blurred. There are no rules, and impunity is the order of the day for those who sing the praises of those in power.

In this unfortunate tale of Wiggle Town, the citizens are left to navigate a landscape where “the tearful laugh, the happy sigh” has become a cruel joke. The hope for a brighter future seems dim as the administration’s policies continue to exacerbate the challenges faced by the populace. The once-promising nation has become a cautionary tale, where the dreams of many are overshadowed by the harsh realities of life under an “awfully wonderful” leadership.

As Nigeria stands at this crossroads, the question remains: Will the citizens rise to reclaim their narrative, or will they continue to accept the absurdity of their situation? The echoes of Wiggle Town serve as a reminder that in the face of adversity, the spirit of the people can prevail. However, it requires courage, unity, and a collective effort to challenge the status quo and demand accountability from those in power.

I decided to write on this because I want a change in the status quo and narratives, because I know that the down can be turned up and wrong done right. Don’t persecute me, but do the right thing. Start by subsidising the price of fuel instead of putting huge amounts of money into things that do not directly affect the lives and well-being of the people.
