Nigeria’s security has increased in Lagos ahead of a nationwide protest on Monday April 7 against raising living expenses, bad governance, and free speech suppressions.
The Take-It -Back movement and civil society organizations are leading the protest.
They are calling for the repeal of Cybercrime Act and the lifting of an “emergency rule” in Rivers State.
Protesters argue that the recent political development in Rivers reflect an erosion of democratic structures under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, with key state institutions suspended.
The planned demostration is expected to draw attention to concerns around governance, including alleged suppression of free speech and misuse of the Cybercrime Act.
According to circular signed on Saturday April 5, by the Deputy Commissioner of Police Tijani O. Fatai, the protest is being organized under the banner of civil engagement but being closely monitored by law enforcement because intelligence suggests that “subversive groups” may attempt to exploit the demostration to invite unrest.
The protesters core demands, by FIB National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, include a call for the repeal of the Cybercrime Act and the lifting of “emergency rule” in Rivers State.
The protesters argued that the recent political developments in Rivers reflect an erosion of democratic structures under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly citing the suspension of key state institutions like the House of Assembly and Executive Council.
Sanyaolu said: “This protest is not just a cry against failed leadership. It is demand for justice, transparency, and respect for constitutional rights of Nigerians”.
