Nigeria has facilitated the safe and dignified return of former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma to Sierra Leone.
In 2024, Koroma faced treason charges in Sierra Leone in connection with a 2023 coup attempt, allegations he denied.
He subsequently relocated to Nigeria, where he received medical care.
Koroma, born in 1953 in Makeni, is a former insurance executive who led the All People’s Congress (APC) and served as Sierra Leone’s president from 2007 to 2018.
He won the presidential elections in 2007 and 2012, with his administration focusing on infrastructure development and post-war recovery.
He later handed over power peacefully in 2018.
The charges against the former president were dropped in July 2026, paving the way for his return.
