The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force studied the state policing models of India, the United States, and Pakistan before developing a framework for the proposed establishment of state police in Nigeria.
According the IGP, the comparative study examined how the three countries operate decentralized policing systems, coordinate security responsibilities between federal and state authorities, and ensure accountability and effective law enforcement.
He explained the proposed framework was carefully designed to reflect Nigeria’s constitutional structure, security realities, and governance system, while drawing lessons from international best practices.
The police chief said the objective is to create policing model that will strengthen community-based security, improve crime prevention and response, enhance collaboration among security agencies, and enable states to play a more active role in safeguarding lives and property.
The IGP added that the framework is intended to support ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing architecture and address the country’s evolving security challenges.
