NIGERIAN RED CROSS RAISES 2.5 BILLION NAIRA TO COMBAT HUNGER AND SAVE LIVES- Israel Adeyemi

In Nigeria, the humanitarian crisis continues to intensify, with an alarming 26.5 million people, including women and children, in desperate need of life-saving assistance to prevent imminent death and prolonged suffering.

Hunger Crisis in Nigeria

This situation, which spans across various regions, has placed immense pressure on the country’s resources and social services. While the Nigerian government is making commendable efforts to address these challenges, the scale of the crisis remains overwhelming, requiring the concerted efforts of civil society, humanitarian organizations, and the global community.

One of the foremost organizations at the forefront of this effort is the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1960, the Nigerian Red Cross is the largest and most active humanitarian organization in the country. With a network of over 800,000 dedicated volunteers, the society has unfettered access to some of the most vulnerable and underserved populations across Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by conflict, natural disasters, and food insecurity.

According to reports, the society reaches a cumulative audience of between 10 to 100 million people, spreading its humanitarian services across every state in Nigeria. The Nigerian Red Cross Society’s work is underpinned by its core mandate to preserve human life and dignity, respond swiftly to disasters and conflicts, and advocate for policies that address urgent humanitarian needs.

Its areas of focus include disaster relief, health services, conflict response, and addressing malnutrition, which has reached critical levels in recent years.

With millions of people facing severe hunger, the Red Cross has stepped in as a crucial lifeline for many families, providing food, medical supplies, and other essential resources to alleviate suffering.

However, despite the enormous efforts of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, achieving these lofty goals has not been without its challenges.

One of the most significant hurdles is the issue of inadequate funding. The increasing number of people in need and the complexity of the crises facing Nigeria have far outstripped the financial resources available to the society.

Without substantial and sustained funding, the society’s ability to deliver vital services to the millions at risk remains in jeopardy.

To address this financial shortfall, the Nigerian Red Cross Society has developed innovative strategies to generate the necessary funds. One such initiative was the organization of a grand fundraising dinner and gala night, held at the prestigious Civic Centre on Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

This high-profile event aimed to raise a significant sum of 2.5 billion naira, which would be used to support 31.5 million Nigerians who are at risk of severe hunger and malnutrition by October 2024.

The event brought together an impressive array of attendees, including heads of civil society organizations, leaders from financial institutions, corporate partners, celebrities, and volunteers, all of whom share a commitment to supporting the Nigerian Red Cross Society’s noble cause.

The atmosphere at the event was one of solidarity and urgency, as guests gathered not just to celebrate the accomplishments of the Red Cross but to reaffirm their commitment to helping those in need.

In her welcome address at the event, Lagos State Chairperson of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mrs. Bola Bakare, highlighted the crucial role that every individual and organization can play in supporting the society’s humanitarian mission.

She called on all attendees to not only contribute financially but to use their platforms and influence to raise awareness about the severity of the crisis and the importance of collective action.

Similarly, Prof. Oluyemi Adeaga, President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, in his keynote speech stressed the profound impact of giving, noting that every donation, no matter the size, has the power to offer hope to those in despair.

“Giving provides hope for a fear-free tomorrow,” he stated. “It empowers individuals to face the future with confidence, knowing that they are not alone in their struggle.” While speaking to newsmen Mr. Karsten Voigt, Country Manager for the British Red Cross, echoed the sentiments of unity and collective responsibility.

He emphasized the critical role of governments and other relevant bodies in the fight against hunger, urging them to fulfill their duties in addressing the root causes of the crisis.

“While civil societies like the Nigerian Red Cross are doing extraordinary work,” Voigt said, “the scale of the problem requires a multi-faceted approach involving both public and private sectors to create lasting solutions.”As the evening progressed, attendees were treated to performances by prominent Nigerian artists, whose music and art celebrated the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

The event was not only a call to action but also a celebration of the power of community, compassion, and shared humanity. As civil societies like the Nigerian Red Cross continue their tireless work to alleviate suffering, one thing remains clear: the power to create meaningful change lies in our collective humanity.

By supporting initiatives like the Red Cross’ fundraising efforts, we can ensure that millions of vulnerable Nigerians have the chance to look forward to tomorrow with hope, dignity, and a brighter future.
