The Coalition of civil Society group has urged the Federal Government to adequately fund the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) so as to effectively tackle 2020 floodings.
The NIHSA had warned that the country might experience greater flooding with disastrous consequences this year.
Following this prediction, the agency warned that Nigerians should make adequate preparations against the oncoming rainy season.
The Coordinator of the Coalition, Roland Odih in a statement issued in Abuja said provision of funds which will be adequately monitored by the CSOs will go a long way in mitigating against the effects of floods in the country.
He said the NIHSA Director General, Clement Nze Onyeaso, due to his nature and determination in protecting the citizens should be appreciated by the Federal Government.
Odih urged the FG to take the issue seriously so as to avoid the ‘Fire Brigade Approach’ when the rain is already here.
“Attempts should be made to open up drainages or create drainage paths where none existed,” he said.
The CSO also vowed to assist the agency in monitoring its spendings so that acts of corruption can be eradicated.
