The  Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, has said that it would commence nationwide clampdown on illegal courier operators across the country.

The area postal manager for the Anambra territory, Mr. Uriah Jaja told reporters in Awka that activities of illegal courier operators were denying NIPOST a lot of revenue, adding that the regulatory arm of the service had already swung into action in the Lagos area to fish out the illegal operators and would soon extend its activities to all the states in the country.

He regretted that many transport operators dabbled into courier service without proper registration, assuring that the long arms of the law would soon catch up with them if they failed to stop such illegal business.

Jaja identified other challenges facing NIPOST to include decaying infrastructure, inadequate logistics, lack of adequate fund to procure modern technology and encroachment of villagers into NIPOST property in some communities.

He said: “In Anambra State for instance, the challenge of encroachment on NIPOST property is becoming very worrisome. While some communities are assisting to modernize the decaying infrastructure in their areas, others are bent on encroaching on our premises and committing arson on the Post Office buildings in their quest to take over our property.

“The need for cooperation, collaboration and integration is vital in the bid to provide excellent services to the various communities.”

According to him, NIPOST and two communities in Anambra State are in court over land acquired many decades ago for NIPOST, advising those involved that it would be in their best interest to withdraw such cases and pursue the path of progress for their communities.
