A fresh political controversy has erupted in Imo State following a social media statement by Chinasa Nwaneri, an ally of Governor Hope Uzodimma, claiming that the Nigeria Police Force has evidence to prosecute former Governor Rochas Okorocha over alleged fraud.
Nwaneri’s declaration has further heightened political tensions between the two former governors, whose relationship has deteriorated amid an increasingly bitter struggle over the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Imo West Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The latest development comes against the background of allegations of forgery, criminal conspiracy and disputes surrounding the authenticity of documents relating to the APC senatorial primary in Imo West.
The controversy also follows an investigation initiated after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) petitioned security agencies over a disputed document reportedly declaring Okorocha the winner of the party’s senatorial primary.
The police investigation and the allegations against Okorocha have added another layer to the political confrontation, particularly as both camps continue to challenge each other’s claims over the party ticket.
On October 29, 2026, a Federal High Court ruling further complicated the contest by nullifying Uzodimma’s recognition as the APC senatorial candidate for Imo West and declaring Okorocha the lawful winner of the party’s primary. Uzodimma has indicated his intention to challenge the judgment.
The governor’s camp has maintained that Uzodimma won the primary, while Okorocha has relied on the court’s decision to assert his claim to the ticket.
Against this backdrop, Nwaneri’s social media allegation that the police possess evidence to prosecute Okorocha raises fresh questions about the intersection of criminal investigations and the ongoing political struggle.
However, Nwaneri’s assertion remains an attributed claim and should not be interpreted as a formal police declaration that Okorocha has been found guilty of any offence. Any criminal allegation must be established through due investigation and judicial proceedings.
For Imo people, the unfolding confrontation goes beyond the political ambitions of two former governors. It places renewed attention on the integrity of party primaries, the independence of security agencies, political accountability and the role of the judiciary in resolving disputes over electoral mandates.
As the legal and political battles continue, a critical question remains: will the contest between Uzodimma and Okorocha be resolved through the courts and established democratic processes, or will it deepen the political divisions within Imo State?
