Oborevwori’s Defection: Who’s the Next Opposition Governor to Join APC?

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, made headlines by becoming the first opposition governor to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Oborevwori’s defection, widely seen as a strategic realignment, has sparked a wave of speculation across the nation about who might be next.

With the 2027 general elections drawing closer and the Tinubu-led APC working to consolidate power, attention has quickly turned to other governors elected on the platform of opposition parties.

Among those under public scrutiny are; Peter Mbah of Enugu, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Alex Otti of Abia, Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa and Agbu Kefas of Taraba.

These governors, drawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), are now at the center of heightened political calculations and backroom negotiations.

Sources close to the presidency suggest that overtures have been made to some of them as the APC intensifies efforts to bolster its influence in traditionally opposition strongholds.

Some of these governors may find themselves under pressure, especially amid internal party wrangling or tensions with state lawmakers and party stakeholders.
