PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State* — In an age when information travels faster than evidence, social media has increasingly become a powerful platform for public advocacy, accountability and the exposure of alleged wrongdoing.

However, the same platform can also become a dangerous arena where allegations are treated as facts, reputations are damaged before investigations are concluded, and disputes are reduced to competing narratives.

The controversy involving Odibola Properties Limited* and Chimezie Princewill Onwuka, popularly known as Mezie, over a disputed property at Mbodo-Aluu in Rivers State has brought this issue into sharp focus.

At the centre of the dispute are allegations concerning land ownership and acquisition, the role of various parties in the transaction, and the legal documents said to underpin Odibola Properties’ involvement.

While the allegations deserve scrutiny, so too does the response of the company. The central question should therefore not be which side has the louder social-media presence, but what the available documentary and legal evidence actually establishes.

Odibola Properties: A Company Defending Its Reputation

Odibola Properties Limited has presented itself as a real estate development company focused on property investment, legitimate acquisition and the protection of investors’ interests.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Oshobukola Sunny Isaac, has also publicly positioned himself as an advocate against land grabbing and unlawful interference with property interests in Rivers State.

The company’s public profile received recognition on October 24, 2026, when Oshobukola was reportedly honoured with the Anti-Land Grabbing Advocate of the Year 2026 Award* at the Niger Delta Advancement Honours.

An award, by itself, cannot establish the legality of a particular property transaction. Nevertheless, it provides context to the company’s stated public position that legitimate property transactions and investor protection should be encouraged in the state.

The current controversy therefore presents an opportunity for the company’s claims, as well as the allegations against it, to be subjected to proper scrutiny.

The Mbodo-Aluu Dispute and the Need for Documentary Verification

One of the major issues raised in the controversy concerns the circumstances under which Odibola Properties became involved in the disputed land at Mbodo-Aluu.

According to the account presented by Odibola Properties, the company did not simply purchase the property directly from Fabulous Amaewhule, as has allegedly been suggested.

The company says its involvement arose through a Power of Attorney granted by an association of medical doctors following an out-of-court settlement involving Fabulous Amaewhule, whom the company identifies as a judgment creditor in earlier proceedings involving the doctors.

If that account is supported by the relevant court records, settlement documents and Power of Attorney, it could materially alter the way the transaction should be understood.

However, it is equally important to stress that the existence of a Power of Attorney does not, by itself, conclusively establish ownership or extinguish competing claims.

The legal effect of such a document depends on the authority of the grantor, the underlying title, the terms of the settlement, applicable court decisions, and other relevant property documents.

That is precisely why the matter should be determined through evidence rather than social-media conclusions.

Questions About Mezie’s Allegations

Mezie has publicly raised questions concerning Odibola Properties’ alleged involvement in the Mbodo-Aluu land dispute.

Such allegations, particularly where they concern land ownership and alleged land grabbing, are matters of public interest.

However, public interest also demands responsible journalism and advocacy.

Before an individual or organisation is publicly labelled a land grabber, the relevant title documents, court judgments, settlement agreements, Powers of Attorney and other supporting records should be examined.

The public deserves to know whether the allegations accurately reflect the documentary record and whether all sides were given a fair opportunity to respond.

The fundamental principle should be simple: an allegation is not the same thing as proof.

A Previous ABSU Disciplinary Report

There has also been public discussion of a disciplinary matter involving a person identified as Onwuka Chimezie Princewill.

Vanguard reported in March 2022 that Abia State University, Uturu, had rusticated a 500-level law student named Onwuka Chimezie Princewill for one academic session following a university disciplinary process concerning alleged falsification of an academic transcript. The report said the university acted after accepting the findings and recommendations of a panel established to investigate the matter.

That report is part of the public record.

However, caution is necessary in connecting that report to the present controversy. The fact that the names are the same does not, on its own, conclusively establish that the individual reported by Vanguard is the same person currently known publicly as Mezie.

Even if the identities are independently established, the 2022 university disciplinary matter should not automatically be used to determine the truth or otherwise of allegations concerning the present land dispute.

A person’s past should not substitute for evidence in a separate dispute.

What it does demonstrate, however, is the importance of applying the same standard of scrutiny to everyone involved in a public controversy.

Public Advocacy Must Be Accompanied by Accountability

There is nothing inherently wrong with using social media to raise concerns about alleged land grabbing, property disputes, or possible injustice.

Indeed, social media can help draw attention to issues that might otherwise remain unnoticed.

The danger arises when advocacy moves from raising questions to issuing definitive judgments without sufficient verification.

A person who publicly challenges the integrity of another individual or company assumes a corresponding responsibility to ensure that the information being disseminated is accurate, balanced, and properly supported.

Similarly, companies facing allegations must be prepared to submit their own claims to independent verification.

This principle should apply equally to Odibola Properties and Mezie.

Key Questions That Require Answers

Rather than allowing the controversy to become another social-media battle, several questions should be answered through documentary evidence:

  1. What do the relevant court judgments say about the disputed property and the parties involved?
  2. What were the terms of the alleged out-of-court settlement involving the association of medical doctors and Fabulous Amaewhule?
  3. Was a valid Power of Attorney granted to Odibola Properties or its representatives, and what precisely did that document authorise?
  4. What title documents exist in respect of the disputed land?*
  5. Were the claims made against Odibola Properties based on an examination of the relevant legal documents?
  6. Did all parties whose interests are affected have an opportunity to present their side of the matter?
  7. Are there court proceedings or orders that have a direct bearing on the current dispute?

These questions cannot properly be answered by social-media commentary alone.

Trial by Social Media Is Not a Substitute for the Courts

Land disputes are often legally and factually complex.

They may involve family interests, historical ownership, survey plans, allocations, assignments, judgments, settlements, Powers of attorney, and competing claims.

Reducing such matters to a simple social-media accusation can create a distorted picture.

The public should therefore resist the temptation to pronounce individuals or companies guilty merely because an allegation has been repeated many times online.

Repetition does not turn an allegation into evidence.

Likewise, a company’s denial does not automatically prove that the company is right.

The proper approach is to examine the evidence presented by all sides.

Odibola’s Position Also Requires Verification

Odibola Properties has maintained that it has no involvement in unlawful land grabbing and that its activities are based on legitimate transactions and legal documentation.

The company has challenged the allegations against it and insisted that its position should be evaluated through verifiable documents.

That position deserves to be heard.

But responsible reporting requires an additional step: the company’s claims should also be independently examined.

If the company’s documents establish its authority to act, that evidence should speak for itself.

If competing documents establish otherwise, those documents should equally be brought into the public domain.

This is how a serious property dispute should be handled.

Protecting the Integrity of Real Estate Investment in Rivers

The wider implications of the controversy go beyond Odibola Properties and Mezie.

Rivers State has a growing real estate market, and confidence in land transactions is essential for investors, developers, families and communities.

Allegations of land grabbing can seriously damage businesses and individuals.

At the same time, genuine victims of unlawful acquisition must have the freedom to speak out and seek redress.

The solution is therefore neither silence nor unchecked accusation.

The solution is evidence, due process, independent verification and access to justice.

The Odibola Properties-Mezie controversy presents an important lesson for the public: social-media influence must never replace evidence.

Those making allegations should be prepared to substantiate them.

Those being accused should be prepared to produce documents supporting their defence.

And members of the public should resist the pressure to reach conclusions before the relevant evidence has been properly examined.

The reputation of a company should not be destroyed by an allegation that has not been tested.

Equally, allegations of wrongdoing should not be dismissed simply because the accused has denied them.

The appropriate standard is the same for everyone: show the documents, examine the evidence and allow the facts to prevail.

For the real estate sector in Rivers State, this is more than a dispute between individuals or organisations. It is a reminder that property investment depends on confidence, transparency, lawful transactions and respect for due process.

In the final analysis, credibility is not established by the volume of social-media attention an allegation receives. It is established by evidence that can withstand independent scrutiny.
