Jos — More than 20 people have been reportedly been killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Area of Plateau State.
Residents said the attack occurred between midnight on Monday and early hours of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with assailants reportedly moving through the community and attacking residents in their homes.
Residents said the attackers operated for hours, moving from house to house and targeting people in their homes. Some residents were reportedly injured and taken to hospitals for treatment, while others were said to be missing.
An eye witness, Musa Daniel, told journalists that more than 20 deaths had been recorded, while another resident, Dalyop John, said injured victims were receiving treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Plateau Command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the attack, saying the initial figure received by the Command was 18 casualties.
Alabo, however, said the figure is believed to have risen to more than 20, as further details emerge from the affected community.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Faniyan Ayodeji, and his team are currently in their way to the scene to assess the situation.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the security situation in the area, with residents calling for urgent action to protect community and prevent further loss of lives.
