Panic gripped motorists and pedestrians on Thursday after three vehicles were involved in a road traffic crash at the busy State House of Assembly/State Secretariat Junction in Owerri, Imo State, renewing concerns over road safety at one of the state’s busiest government corridors.
The collision occurred during a heavy downpour, leaving the vehicles with varying degrees of damage and causing temporary traffic disruption. Remarkably, no life was lost and no serious injuries were reported, a development many eyewitnesses described as miraculous considering the impact of the crash.
9News Nigeria, which arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, observed that persistent rainfall had left the road surface soaked, reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions. The damaged vehicles remained at the scene as of the time of filing this report, forcing many motorists to slow down while curious onlookers gathered around the accident site.
Among the vehicles involved was a silver Toyota Camry sedan, which sustained extensive damage to its front-left section. Also involved were a dark blue sedan, which came to rest on the road median, and a white sedan. Debris from the collision was scattered across the roadway as road users navigated the area with caution.
Speaking exclusively with 9News Nigeria under the heavy rainfall, the owners of the affected vehicles narrated how the accident occurred. They attributed the crash to excessive speed on the rain-soaked road, explaining that the slippery surface made it difficult to regain control before the vehicles collided.

Their accounts suggest that overspeeding in poor weather conditions was a major contributing factor, although the relevant authorities are expected to determine the official cause after completing their investigation.
The latest incident has once again drawn public attention to the increasing number of accidents recorded around some of the newly redesigned roundabouts and signal-controlled intersections introduced across the Owerri municipality as part of the Imo State Government’s urban renewal and modern traffic management programme.
While the infrastructure was designed to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and support urban development, road safety experts have consistently maintained that the effectiveness of any road system ultimately depends on motorists obeying traffic regulations.
Road safety professionals warn that rainfall significantly reduces tyre grip, increases braking distance and limits visibility, making excessive speed especially dangerous. They advise motorists to reduce speed whenever roads are wet, maintain safe following distances, obey traffic signs and traffic signals, and approach junctions and roundabouts with extreme caution.
9News reporter observed that the road surface remained extremely slippery throughout the downpour, underscoring the dangers of speeding during adverse weather. The incident serves as a timely reminder that no journey is worth risking human life. A few extra minutes of patience behind the wheel can prevent tragedies that leave families with lifelong pain.
Although Thursday’s crash ended without any loss of life, it stands as another wake-up call for motorists across Imo State. Every driver has a responsibility to protect not only their own lives but also those of passengers, pedestrians and fellow road users by driving responsibly at all times, particularly during the rainy season.
As emergency efforts continued to restore normal traffic flow, residents called for greater public awareness on defensive driving, stricter compliance with speed limits and sustained road safety campaigns to reduce avoidable crashes across Owerri and other parts of the state.
9News Nigeria will continue to monitor developments and provide further updates should the relevant authorities issue an official statement on the incident.
