Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party stalwart, Peter Obi, has formally declared his intention to contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the upcoming election cycle.
Obi made the declaration on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program where he spoke extensively on national issues, including insecurity, economic diversification, and agriculture.
“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi stated.
Addressing the persistent security crisis in Northern Nigeria, particularly in the North-West and North-Central regions, Obi expressed confidence in his capacity to drive solutions.
“The criminality we face today in the North, I will deal with it. If I’m president, the North will celebrate me; I have an idea of the problem,” he asserted.
The 2023 presidential candidate also highlighted agriculture as a viable alternative to oil revenue, emphasizing its untapped potential to drive economic growth and create jobs.
He highlighted Niger State as a fertile zone that could become a national breadbasket.
“I may not turn it around in the very first year, but I can tell you, we can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil. You see that Niger State, where we are having problems? It has some of the best fertile land on the surface of the earth,” he said.
