Kenyan authorities have apprehended a suspect believed to be a former acquaintance of Mary Claire, a 24-year-old woman who was the victim of vicious acid attack.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Elvis Opiro, the suspect in custody, allegedly commissioned an attacker to carry out the assault.
The perpetrator waylaid Mary Claire and doused her with a caustic substance, resulting in severe facial injuries.
Prompt action by bystanders led to the cornering of the suspect, who was subsequently rescued by police after an irate mob had gathered.
Elvis Opiro is currently in custody at Kibera Police Station pending further investigations.
Meanwhile, Mary Claire remains hospitalized at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is undergoing specialized treatment for her injuries.
Notably, Mary Claire had previously reported Elvis Opiro for assault in November, but no victims was taken at the time.
According to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, the suspect’s arrest was facilitated by a trap sit by authorities. Ongoing investigations aim to gather more evidence.
