POLICE OFFICERS DEMANDING BAIL MONEY, THOSE PAYING WILL FACE PROSECUTION — IGP DISU WARNS

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a stern warning to police officers who demand money from suspects or their relatives as a condition for granting bail, declaring that officers found engaging in such practices risk prosecution.

The warning underscores the need for greater discipline, transparency and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in the handling of suspects in police custody.

Bail is a legal process designed to allow eligible suspects to regain their freedom while awaiting further investigation or trial, subject to applicable laws and conditions. It is not intended to be turned into an avenue for extortion, personal enrichment or the exploitation of citizens who find themselves in police custody.

Under the law, police officers must act within their lawful powers when dealing with suspects and must not use their positions to demand unauthorised payments. Any allegation of extortion or abuse of authority should be investigated in accordance with established procedures.

The IGP’s warning also sends a message to members of the public who may be tempted to offer money to police officers to secure the release of suspects. Such payments could expose those involved to legal consequences, depending on the circumstances and the applicable law.

However, lawful bail requirements must be distinguished from illegal demands for money. Where bail is granted subject to lawful conditions, those conditions must be respected. The issue is the demand, offer or payment of money to improperly influence police duties or secure an unlawful advantage.

The warning places responsibility on both police personnel and members of the public to reject corrupt practices and support lawful procedures in the administration of justice.

For citizens who encounter alleged demands for illegal bail payments, reporting the incident through appropriate police complaint channels can help authorities investigate and identify officers who may have abused their positions.

The effectiveness of the warning will ultimately depend on consistent enforcement, credible investigations and appropriate sanctions against anyone found culpable.
