Rev’d Prof. Edwin Julius Jeblar Momoh, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), Sierra Leone, has delivered a thought-provoking lecture at the 3rd Distinguished Public Lecture of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Ondo State.
The distinguished scholar spoke on the theme, “Climate Change and Food Security in Africa: Impacts on Agriculture, Access and Adaptation,” addressing a gathering of academics, government representatives, traditional leaders, students, and other stakeholders.
Prof. Momoh highlighted the growing impact of climate change on Africa’s agricultural sector, food supply systems, and economic development.
He explained that increasing temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, environmental degradation, and extreme weather conditions are posing serious challenges to millions of people, especially communities that depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
According to him, climate change has moved beyond being a future concern and has become an immediate challenge requiring collective action. He stressed the need for stronger partnerships between governments, universities, research institutions, development organisations, and local communities to develop sustainable solutions to food insecurity.
A major focus of the lecture was the importance of climate-smart agriculture, technological advancement, and research-based approaches in tackling the continent’s environmental challenges. Prof. Momoh urged stakeholders to invest in innovative farming methods, improve food production systems, and support adaptation strategies that will help communities manage the effects of climate change.
He also emphasized the role of universities as drivers of knowledge, research, and innovation, noting that academic institutions must continue to provide solutions to pressing societal challenges.
He encouraged young people and researchers to actively participate in developing ideas that promote environmental sustainability and food security.
Participants at the lecture were engaged by Prof. Momoh’s analysis and practical recommendations, which sparked discussions on agricultural transformation, climate resilience, youth involvement, and policy development.
During the interactive session, attendees raised questions and shared perspectives on ways Africa can build stronger and more sustainable food systems.
Responding to the discussions, Prof. Momoh appreciated the Vice-Chancellor of OAUSTECH, Prof. Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa, the university management, staff, and students for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him. He commended OAUSTECH for creating platforms that encourage intellectual discussions on issues affecting Africa’s development.
In recognition of his contribution to academic discourse and sustainable development, OAUSTECH honoured Prof. Momoh with a commemorative plaque and souvenir. The gesture reflected the university’s appreciation for his insights and commitment to advancing education and research across Africa.
The lecture further strengthened OAUSTECH’s Distinguished Public Lecture Series, leaving participants with renewed awareness of the need for collaboration, innovation, and urgent action in addressing climate change and ensuring food security for future generations.
