Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Mahmoud Gumi, has raised concern over what he described as hidden involvement of powerful foreign nations in Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service in Kaduna, Gumi said the resurgence of violence in parts of the country points to external support for armed groups destabilising Nigeria.
Gumi noted that signs of improved security were beginning to emerge in key flashpoints such as the Abuja-Kaduna highway, which had previously gained notoriety for frequent attacks and kidnappings.
“That route had become far safer in recent months before this renewed surge in violence”, he said.
He also cited farmers in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, who had started returning to their fields after years of abandonment due to insecurity.
“The return of farmers was positive indication of relative peace. But the sudden spike in attacks raises serious questions”, Gumi said.
The cleric called on the Nigerian government to intensify – gathering, strengthen diplomatic engagements, and thoroughly investigate any external involvement in the nation’s security crisis.
“The government must take deeper look at possible foreign support for these armed groups”, he said.
Gumi maintained that the current trend contradicts earlier progress in the fight against banditry and terrorism, and warned that ignoring the possibility of foreign influence could hamper long-term peace efforts.
