RIVERS LGA Election: Avoid Campaign of Calumny, Focus On Manifesto, APP Chairman Tells Candidates

The Action Peoples Party has advised its candidates in the October 5 local government elections to avoid statements capable of inciting tension, as it is not beneficial for the state.

The party also cautions candidates against working against its vision and the interests of the state.

The state chairman of the Action Peoples Party, Hon. Sunny Wokekoro, gave the charge while addressing the party’s 23 chairmanship and vice chairmanship candidates and the 319 councillorship candidates at the state secretariat of the party in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

He emphasized the importance of issue-based campaigns.

He said, “We are not interested in hearing about who has wronged you or who has done this or that. As you continue with this campaign, please focus on the issues. Present your manifesto to the electorate and provide ideas on how to do things differently.”

“We have 319 councilors, 23 council chairmen, and 23 council vice chairmen. We understand that not all of you will be loyal, but please do not be the one traitor who betrays us.”

“You have a responsibility to protect the interests of Rivers State. I am not asking you to defend me or to give me anything,” he added.

Speaking further, the APP chairman emphasized that the party is committed to changing the narrative of political leadership and urged candidates to demonstrate their capacity and competence if elected if they wish for the party to lead at a higher level.

“We want to change the narrative of political party leadership in Rivers State. We are going to the polls, and with the special grace of God, we will all be victorious. Please, we did not give you this ticket to disrupt the government. When you win, we want a government that focuses on the people.”

“We want synergy between the poor and the rich. This is the foundation for 2027. By 2027, we will elect a governor, and that is why I encourage you to please reach out to others.”

The chairmanship candidate of the party in Port Harcourt City Local Government, Hon. Ezebunwo Ichemati, who spoke on behalf of the candidates, reassured that they will provide credible leadership if elected into office.

He said, “We will defend the interests of the party and the state if elected into office. We will also adhere to the directive to avoid engaging in negative campaigns.”
