A tragic incident occurred in Kano State after a 45-year-old man lost his life while attempting to retrieve his mobile phone from an abandoned well.
The deceased, identified as Yusuf Usman, reportedly entered the old well, which had been converted into a refuse dump site, in Kwa town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.
Confirming the incident, the Spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said the agency received an emergency call at about 11:13 a.m. on Wednesday and immediately deployed rescue personnel to the scene.
According to him, rescue officials arrived and found the victim tapped inside the well after he descended into it in an effort to recover his phone which had fallen inside.
He explained that the victim was eventually brought out unconscious but was later confirmed dead due to suffocation caused by lack of oxygen and excessive heat inside the well.
The remains of the deceased were later handed over to the head of Kwa community.
The Director of Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, has since urged residents to avoid entering dangerous wells and to ensure abandoned wells are properly covered to prevent future tragedies.
