Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, SAN, has reversed his decision to contest the Borno governorship and will instead retain his seat representing Borno Central Senatorial District.
The reversal paved the way for Engr. Mustapha Gubio to emerge as the APC governorship candidate in Borno State.
The decision was reached at a meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday night.
The meeting had in attendance Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, APC Deputy National Chairman Ali Bukar Dalori, Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari, members of the National Assembly, and the Borno Elders Forum.
According to a statement from the camp of Senator Lawan, he was prevailed upon to drop his bid to strengthen democracy, ensure unity, and promote harmony within the APC in Borno State.
“In the same vein, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan is positioned to retain his seat as the senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District,” the statement signed by his Assistant, Usman Alkali, said.
Governor Zulum is expected to lead the candidates and stalwarts into Maiduguri on Friday, where they will be received by thousands of supporters.
The statement called on supporters of Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan to “remain and submit to what God has decreed in faith, bearing in mind that it is God that gives power to whomever He chooses.”
